An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 9 March 2012 12:16 (A review of Jakob the Liar)

I have never heard of this movie before but since it was starring Robin Williams, I thought I could give it a try. I must say it was rather interesting to see Robin Williams doing something different for a change and the story was not bad at all but I can't say it was really mindblowing. The first issue is that it is obviously really similar to 'Life is beautiful' but it never reaches the level of this great movie. Since it is a actually a remake, I really wonder how is the original version. Anyway, I don't think Robin Williams should be blamed since he delivered a decent performance. Even though the story was actually not bad at all, it was just not intriguing enough. I mean, it was too straightforward and predictable for my taste. To conclude, it remains a decent WWII drama and it is definitely worth look, especially if you are interested in Robin Williams' work.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 9 March 2012 10:39 (A review of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief)

Ever since the huge success of the 'Harry Potter' movies, the major studios have tried to adapt many more Young Adult books hoping they will find their new cashcow. Well, in this genre, I think I have never seen a movie which was so similar to Harry Potter. Indeed, they hired the same director (Chris Columbus),  the young hero had some parental issues, he had 2 friends (a boy and a girl) and they all went to a paranormal school... Fortunately, they did switch the wizards and witches for the Greek gods, otherwise, it would have been pretty much a straight remake. Anyway, even though the whole thing had some potential, it still felt rather half-baked. Above all, while most of the Harry Potter movies lasted at least 150 mins, this one was not even 2 hours which was just way too short to deliver something that would really work. I mean, first, they had to introduce Percy in our world, then he had to discover his actual background, then he had to go to his 'special' school and finally he had to solve some quest. Seriously, that was just way too much to handle and everyhing felt really rushed. Still, if you don't analyze it too much, it was not bad, the second half was fairly entertaining (I especially enjoyed the casino thing) and Logan Lerman was quite charismatic. To conclude, it was nothing really mind-blowing whatsoever but it was still rather well made and fairly entertaining and I guess it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 8 March 2012 10:04 (A review of The Last King of Scotland)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I have it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Well, to be honest, I always had some mixed feelings towards this movie. I mean, I did enjoy this flick but I can't say I was blown away and the main reason was that I didn't really appreciate this mix of historical facts with some complete fiction, especially the first time I saw the damned thing. Maybe you didn't know that before but the character played by James McAvoy, Dr. Nicholas Garrigan, is enterily fictional and has actually never existed and many of those events actually never took place. When I found this out afterwards, I felt rather cheated. Still, the directing is pretty good and efficient, James McAvoy gave a decent and convincing performance and, of course, Forest Whitaker completely rocked his performance and deservedly received an Academy award for his tremendous work. Honestly, I would rather have that they focused the story on him instead of focusing on this fake character but it wasn't meant to be, I guess. With this rewatch, I was this time more able to let go the fact that it was actually a fiction but it still didn't completely work for me though. I mean, the first half was fine but, again, they kept adding some rather improbable fictional events just to move on the plot and the second half was pretty much on auto-pilot. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it is still a good historical thriller, the actors were really awesome but, to be honest, I wish they didn't add all this fictitional stuff.

A bad movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 8 March 2012 09:13 (A review of George and the Dragon)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection of movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Val Kimer. In fact, even though I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing, it was actually even worse than what I thought. First of all, I have never seen such a cheesy looking dragon, the introduction was really messy and the cast was made of B actors (James Purefoy, Piper Perabo, Patrick Swayze, Michael Clarke Duncan, Val Kilmer). Basically, James Purefoy was some kind of cheap version of Hugh Jackman and what on Earth happened to Val Kilmer?!? Since the beginning of the 2000's, he shows up mostly in some worthless movies and this movie was definitely not an exception. Basically, the whole thing was a really unoriginal and pretty boring medieval tale with the usual stuff like dragons, knights and a princess and I really couldn't care less about this tale. To conclude, it is a pretty bad movie and it is not worth a look whatsoever.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 7 March 2012 02:32 (A review of WiseGirls (2002))

Following her disastrous turn in 'Glitter' (which I haven't seen yet), Mariah Carey showed up in this rather unknown and forgotten flick. The main reason I watched it was not, in fact, Mariah Carey herself but I watched it above all for Mira Sorvino, even though she is unfortunately way past her prime. First of all, even though it is of no real importance, I thought it was a really lame title which doesn't really give you the feeling that you should watch this flick. Still, surprisingly, I thought that Carey was not bad at all. I mean, she wasn't mind-blowing either but her performance was decent enough, even the best performance in this movie. Unfortunately, it was a rather unoriginal and pedestrian plot and I didn't care about the characters and what they were going through. To conclude, even though it is not really bad, even though it seems much better than 'Glitter', it is still pretty average and eventually not realy worth, only maybe for the die-hard fans of Mariah Carey.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 7 March 2012 12:50 (A review of Tuya's Marriage)

I have never heard of this flick before but since it won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival, I thought I should check it out. Well, eventually, even though it was a decent watch, to be honest, I still had a hard time to really care about the damned thing. I mean, it wasn't bad at all but the damned thing was just so sad and depressing. Basically, it was taking place somewhere in Mongolia where there was no running water, electrity (pretty much how it used to be in West-Europa 200 years ago). But, apparently, it wasn’t enough hardship so the main character broke her back, her husband was handicapped and even though she loved her husband, she had to divorce him to marry someone else who would provide for the whole family... Seriously, even if I have seen my share of dark movies, it was still really gloomy and the ending was even more heartbreaking... Fortunately, the directing and acting were not bad and, above all, this movie gave an interesting look on a foreign culture which I didn't know before. Still, I can't say that this movie was really entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, even if I wasn’t really sold by this flick,  it was still an interesting movie and it is worth a look, especially if you want to see something really different.

A very good movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 7 March 2012 11:53 (A review of Doubt)

A movie starring both Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman is an event not to be missed and I'm so glad I finally managed to watch this flick. I was expecting something pretty good and I wasn't disappointed, in fact, it was even better than I thought it would be. Indeed, Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman were both really good here and when there was this big confrontation, it was like witnessing some kind of awesome cinematic Clash of the Titans. They were both so into their characters, it was just amazing. Concerning Amy Adams, to be honest, at the time, I wasn’t really a fan of her work because she used to play some really obnoxious characters but, fortunately, she toned down her usual hysteria and she wasn't bad at all. A part from that, I thought it was a rather fascinating and relevant story, even if it took place almost 40 years ago. During this movie, even though it might not be the point at all, I was reminded about our attitude towards children and, pretty often, if you get close to a child, it will be judged as inappropriate by many people. Furthermore, it was dealing with many interesting subjects such as religion, pride, ambition, guilt and, of course, doubt. To conclude, the actors were awesome, the story was spellbinding and it was definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 6 March 2012 01:50 (A review of Grosse Pointe Blank)

Since I kept hearing good things about this flick, I was really eager to watch it and I had some rather high expectations. Eventually, pretty much like 'High Fidelity', even though I liked it, I can't say I was blown away. I mean, you have a pretty cool cast (John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Alan Arkin, Dan Aykroyd, Joan Cusack, Hank Azaria, Jeremy Piven) and they all delivered some decent performances (Joan Cusack was just hilarious for example) and the whole concept was pretty neat (a hitman goes to his high-school reunion). I don't know, maybe it was too 'nice' for me, in the sense that there is nothing much at stake except having a few laughs. Still, John Cusack was born to play such characters and he was just pitch-perfect and the whole thing was really fun to watch. To conclude, I'm not sure if it deserves its cult-classic status but it remains an original and entertaining dark comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you want to see something good starring John Cusack.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 6 March 2012 01:11 (A review of Crazy Heart)

Since I'm a huge fan of Jeff Bridges and since virtually everybody was really enthusiast about this flick, I had some rather huge expectations towards the damned thing. Well, to be honest, I was in fact rather disappointed. I mean, I did like it but , basically, it was just way too similar to 'The Wrestler' and I thought it was not intense enough. Furthermore, I wasn't really convinced by the relationship between Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal which felt rather plot-driven than anything else. Still, I liked this movie above all thanks to the acting. Indeed, you had here a pretty good supporting cast (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall) and they all gave some decent performances and, of course, Jeff Bridges was, as usual, quite awesome. Indeed, I totally believed in his character and it was as if Bridges had been an alcoholic country singer his  whole life. Furthermore, even though the guy was obviously a rather pathetic loser, Bridges still managed to make him charismatic enough (but not too much) so we would still care for him throughout the whole movie. To conclude, even though it was a rather weak story in my opinion, Jeff Bridges was so good, he made it really spellbinding to watch and, eventually, the whole thing is still worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 10 months ago on 6 March 2012 10:40 (A review of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

Since this movie had a rather bad reputation, I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing. Well, probably because I had some rather low expectations, I thought it was not so bad at all after all. To be honest, it’s a shame that they still tried to get the smallest budget possible and, as a result, the whole thing still looked really cheesy. Furthermore, the whole thing felt long and slow when in fact the movie lasted only a little more than 90 minutes. Still, there were many things I enjoyed. For example, it was interesting that, this time around, this sequel started right after the previous movie which was a nice approach. Furthermore, there were more things I enjoyed like seeing the Klingons finally in action, to see the Enterprise being destroyed which was rather unexpected and, of course, the return of Spock which was rather expected. Above all, I have to admit that, after watching the first 3 movies in this franchise, I'm finally starting to care about  these characters and, each time, they bring a new story instead of repeating the same pattern with each sequels which is a good thing. To conclude, even though it might not be not one of the most beloved Star Trek installments,  I thought it was not bad and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
