(A review of
The War Lover)
Honestly, I had never heard of this flick before and I had no idea what to expect but since it was starring Steve McQueen , I thought I should check it out. At the time, McQueen was the new rising star in Hollywood after he completely stole the show from Yul Brynner in āThe Maginicent Sevenā. Indeed, it is actually funny, when you watch this classic you expect McQueen to be the big star but he was actually barely known at the time and, in fact, Yul Brynner was playing the main character but, eventually, the actor who got most of the attention was McQueen when he was in fact playing a supporting character. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it is actually a pretty osbcure flick and, like I said before, I watched it because there was Steve McQueen in it and this time, he was definitely playing the lead. To be honest, McQueen always played basically the same part and there was no exception here but they guy was just really cool as usual but, a part from him, I was kind of bored during the whole thing. Still, to conclude, even though it is nothing really amazing, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
The Spy Who Loved Me)
The other day, I noticed something funny. Indeed, even though I always considered Roger Moore the weakest James Bond, or at least, the least interesting one, I came to realize that I actually didn't really dislike any James Bond installments involving this guy (on the other hand, none of them are among my favorites either). Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it is basically a typical James Bond flick with the usual gadgets and tricks. Roger Moore delivered a decent performance, even though, like I mentioned before, he is definitely not my favorite James Bond (Sean Connery will always be the only one). Anyway, you either love those flicks or not and, at the time, this franchise was highly popular, probably at one of its highest points. There was one thing that I really enjoyed about this flick and that was Barbara Bach. I mean, sure, you definitely don't need the greatest acting skills to be a Bond girl but I think that there was something quite mesmerizing about this actress, too bad her career never really took off afterwards (eventually, she would be mostly remembered as being Ringo Starr's wife). To conclude, even though I'm not a huge fan of this franchise, it was still is rather entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

House of Wax)
Obviously, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching it, mostly because I have a weak spot for Elisha Cuthbert. Actually, to my own surprise, I thought it was actually not that bad after all. I mean, let me put it this way... Before watching this, I thought it would be completely terrible but eventually, even though it was indeed nothing impressive, I thought it was still rather watchable. Furthermore, I didn't really get the fuss about Paris Hilton. Sure, in real life, she seems really obnoxious but in this movie, I thought she was actually alright. I mean, come on, you don't need to be Meryl Streep to be in a slasher movie and I thought she did what was expected from her character, no more, no less. A part from that, I kind of liked the whole wax concept towards the end and there were some rather visually impressive scenes during this climax. To conclude, of course, it remains a rather average movie but I don't think it is as bad as everyone is saying and if you love slasher movies, there is even a chance you may end up actually enjoying it.

To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this flick. I guess I watched it above all because I always had a weak spot for Georgina Verbaan. In the Netherlands, pretty much all the movies are with some subtitles and are not dubbed so there is a demand for Dutch family features since the very young kids pretty much canāt watch anything else. I have to admit it, I'm usually not a fan of such Dutch kids flicks and most of them are usually boring and lazy in my opinion. Well, even though this movie was maybe nothing really amazing, I thought it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, in my opinion. Indeed, in my opinion, it was actually rather well done, totally harmless and eventually quite charming to behold. I wasn't really wild about the songs but I still think it is actually a very nice watch for all children between 3 and 9 years old. To conclude, even if I really donāt like this genre at all, I thought this movie was actually really cute and not bad at all and I think it is actually worth a look, especially if you want to entertain some very young children.Ā

(A review of
The Terror)
Honestly, I never really cared for Roger Cormanās work and I basically saw this movie because there was Jack Nicholson in it. Back then, Nicholson was really at the beginning of his career and he was pretty much unknown at the time but I thought that he delivered a decent performance. Another neat thing about this flick is that apparently a very young Francis Ford Coppola did some uncredited directing here (indeed, even though Roger Corman did shot most of the scenes in 4 days, the second-unit work was filmed over a nine month period by five different directors, Francis Ford Coppola, Dennis Jakob, Monte Hellman, Jack Hill and even Jack Nicholson himself). Furthermore, I think it was the first film I saw starring Boris Karloff. Unfortunately, like I said before, I'm not really a big fan of those Corman productions. I mean, sure, those movies have some charms and it wasn't bad at all but I can't say I really loved it though. Basically, Corman would shot a lot within a couple of days for a couple of bucks, hoping for the best, and fixing the whole thing in the editing room. Still, even though it was nothing amazing, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you wonder how Jack Nicholson started his career.

(A review of
Garage Days)
Honestly, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Alex Proyasās work, I thought I should check it out. Indeed, Proyas is mostly known as an expert in Fantastic/Science-Fiction flicks and, by the way, we will have to wait until 2016 to finally get another directing effort from this guy, it is called āGods of Egyptā, and it would be a gap of 9 long years with his previous movie āKnowingā. Anyway, this time, he definitely tried to do something completely different, a comedy about a garage band. I really wonder how he came up with this project but, eventually, the end result was not bad but not much more than that, Iām afraid. I mean, sure, it was rather well done but there was really nothing new, original or really exciting about it. At the end of the day, it is the typical story about a rising band and even though the directing was decent, I canāt say I was really blown away by the whole thing. Still, even though it is nothing really amazing, it is a decent flick and I think it is worth a look, especially if you want to see something else from Proyas.

(A review of
Sunset Boulevard)
I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I have it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. Eventually, it is a classic which definitely lives up to its strong reputation. Indeed, the directing by Billy Wilder was pretty impressive but Gloria Swanson was the one who really stole the show with her amazing performance. It was quite amazing that even though some scenes in this movie were rather over the top, this movie was still well nuanced and subtle. Personally, I have not always been a huge fan of Billy Wilderās work, especially his comedies like āSabrinaā, āSome Like It Hotā or āThe Apartmentā, but here, he delivered a really dark tale and it was just spellbinding to behold. You can say whatever you want about Hollywood but, from time to time, they do allow a great director to go really dark and, in this case, the end-result was just quite amazing. On top of that, this movie works on so many levels, it tells a story about the characters, about the actors involved, about Hollywood in general and it goes on and on. Anyway, to conclude, I really enjoyed this flick, it is a great classic and a must see for any decent movie lover.

(A review of
Second Best)
Honestly, since it is such an obscure flick, I had no idea what to expect but since I always had a weak spot for William Hurt, I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, in the 80's, William Hurt was one of the most successful and respected actors and almost all his movies were critically heralded and most of them were actually nominated for the best movie Academy award. Then, in the 90's, after making a few dubious choices, he wasn't anymore on the A list but it does not mean that all this movies were actually worthless. This feature is actually a fine example. Like I said before, this flick is actually completely unknown (I was only the 3rd listal member who rated it) and the story is nothing really great to be honest but thanks mostly to Hurt's very good perfomance, it was actually pretty good and I thought it was a solid drama. Indeed, the relationship displayed between this man and this boy was quite convincing and very interesting to behold. To conclude, even though it is no materpiece whatsoever, I actually liked it and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
Molokai: The Story of Father Damien)
I donāt know if you have noticed it but, sometimes, I watch some really obscure flicks and, sometimes, it is quite rewarding but, honestly, sometimes, it is pretty much a waste of time. In this case, I watched it mostly because Peter O'Toole has a small part in it but the rest of the cast (David Wenham, Jan Decleir, Derek Jacobi, Kris Kristofferson, Sam Neill, Tom Wilkinson) was pretty good as well. Honestly, during most of the duration, I seriously wondered how did they come up with such a story. I mean, it was so obscure, so unknown to me, I canāt say I really cared about the whole thing. Sure, the guy did a terrific work and maybe it was sufficient to develop around a story around his work but, to be honest, Iām not sure every inspirational stories are good enough to get a movie adaptation. A part from that, it was not bad at all, itās just that I wasn't really interested by this true story and, at the end, I didn't feel I had really learned some vital information. Still, even though it is terribly obsure, it remains a rather well done historical drama, all the actors involved were pretty good so I guess it might be worth a look but donāt expect anything really amazing.

(A review of
Incendiary)
I had no idea what the whole thing was about before watching this and, to be honest, I thought at first that it was a story about adultery but then suddenly, something really unexpected happened. Before this event, I was really into the story but then, when this pivotal event took place, Iām afraid it didn't work for me anymore. The focus on Michelle Williams was in fact rather well done but all the other sub-plots (Ewan McGregor, the little moslim boy, her husband's colleague, the āconspiracyā theory) were unnecessary and/or poorly developped. Also, it was pretty obvious that the whole thing didn't know where to go. Indeed, was it a psychologial drama or a conspiracy thriller? Still, It wasn't a bad movie either, that's for sure. Indeed, the directing was pretty good and I really loved the mood. Michelle Williams delivered a good perfomance (Still, you might wonder wonder why they didn't actually pick an English actrice for this part) and Ewan McGregor was, as usual, very good as well, even though his character was barely developped in my point of view. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was a failure, it wasnāt a disaster and, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look.
