An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 25 May 2011 08:28 (A review of House of D)

Honestly, I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Robin Williams, I thought I might as well check it out. Basically, like many other actors before him, David Duchovny felt compelled to direct his own movie so he made this really obscure flick. At the time, it was rather poorly received and, indeed, it wasn't really original, but still I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, I thought David Duchovny was quite competent as a director, all the actors involved gave some good perfomances and the story was entertaining enough. The point is that Duchovny managed to create some interesting characters and they made the whole thing compelling to watch but the plot was not reallly strong though. Basically, Duchovny tries really hard to convince us that the whole thing is really deep but it was not really persuasive, Iā€™m afraid. Since then, Duchovny hasnā€™t directed another feature film so Iā€™m not sure if he really enjoyed the whole experience. Anyway, to conclude, all in all, even though it is nothing really amazing, it was not too bad for a directing debut, I thought it was a decent periode drama and I think is actually worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 24 May 2011 08:10 (A review of Terminator Salvation)

First of all, even though this movie has a rather lame reputation, I actually think it is easily, obviously after ' Terminator 2, the most interesting sequel in this franchise. Indeed, there were actually some good stuff in this flick. First of all, it was a really good idea to move the story in the future and remove the time travelling gimmick. Furthermore, the whole thing looked very good and there were some cool action scenes. And finally, there was a pretty neat cast (Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Helena Bonham Carter, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard). Unfortunately, I have to admit it, not everything did work though. Ā Indeed, the main issue was that the story was rather confusing and it didn't really make much sense. In fact, it is not really a surprise because each time there is a Terminator flick, the story becomes more and more illogical and this last installment was really a mess, even after removing the time travelling concept. The other thing that really bothered me were the dialogues as they were rather lame and they made me even laugh a couple of times which was obviously not the intention. Anyway, to conclude, even though they eventually failed because they focused way too much on the action scenes and not enough on the story and the characters, I still think it was an interesting attempt to try something really different with this franchise and I think it is worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 23 May 2011 01:59 (A review of Joe Kidd)

Since I have always been a big fan of Clint Eastwoodā€™s good old Westerns, I thought I might as well check this one out. Well, even though I really wanted to like this movie, eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, Iā€™m afraid. I mean,Ā  Clint Eastwood was awesome and I thought it was quite interesting that the 'bad guys', the Mexican farmers, were actually not so bad at all. Unfortunately, the story was still rather poorly written in my opinion. For example, at first, Joe Kidd didnā€™t want to to get involved but, within five minutes, they managed to find some bogus excuse for him to take part in the proceedings. This has become, by now, a rather old and tired gimmick and, in this case, it was even more poorly handled as, within the next 5 minutes, the guy was actually already regretting his decision to get involved after all! Furthermore, the ending was also rather weak. Anyway, to conclude, even though the whole thing had some potential, at the end of the day, it was still a rather average Western but I think it is still worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 23 May 2011 01:15 (A review of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides)

In 2017, they would once again come up with a 5th instalment for this franchise but, to be honest , I really wonder if it will be really successful, especially since all the recent movies starring Johnny Depp turned to be some massive flops. In fact, his last massive hit was actually this 4th installment so, even though these sequels (even ā€˜Dead Man's Chestā€™ and ā€˜At World's Endā€™) were all rather misguided and, it made sense that they would keep making those movies since they were all terribly successful at the box-office. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to be honest, I thought it was actually rather weak. I mean, sure, the fountain of youth was actually a pretty cool idea but, unfortunately, the story was rather poorly written in my opinion. First of all, without including Jack Sparrow, there were also 3 different groups of people looking for thisĀ  fountain (the Spaniards, Barbossa and Blackbeard) which was just too much. Furthermore, many people complained that Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann were annoying and boring but their replacement (the priest and the mermaid) were actually even worse. Finally, I thought that even though she looked nice, Penelope Cruz didn't really convince me. Eventually, it was actually thanks to Johnny Depp that this movie didn't become really average. Indeed, as usual, he really shined and made the whole thing rather watchable but I wonder if it will work a 5th time around. Anyway, to conclude, even though the whole thing felt like a really unnecessary sequel, I guess it is still worth a look but only if you really like the genre.Ā

A very bad movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 23 May 2011 12:14 (A review of Little Man)

Obviously, I didn't expect much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. Basically, it was really one of those cases when you check a movie just to see if it is as bad as everyone says. Well, eventually, I came to the conclusion that this flick really deserved its bad reputation. Indeed, the original concept was just completely moronic and some (most of them?) jokes were just really tasteless. I mean, from the start, the whole concept sounded like a really terrible idea and they didn't manage to make it more interesting or entertaining than it sounded. Finally, and that was probably the biggest problem, the whole thing was just not funny at all. I mean, you basically had a stupid premise with some stupid characters getting involved with some stupid jokes so the end-result was just rather pathetic. Eventually, more than 5 years later, I would finally watch 'White Chicks' which turned out to be quite terrible as well and I wouldn't be able to tell you which movie was the worse one between these 2. Anyway, to conclude, it was pretty bad so I would advise you to stay away from this and don't waste your time like I did...

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 23 May 2011 11:29 (A review of Sky High)

To be honest, I didnā€™t expect much from the damned thing but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, a few weeks ago, I just saw a very similar flick called ā€˜Zoomā€™ which was released a year later after this movie. Apparently, ā€˜Sky Highā€™ was the one with the better reputation (in fact, some fans argued that it really deserved a sequel) but even though I thought it was indeed slightly better, I thought it was still pretty weak though and I didnā€™t care much for the damned thing. At least, instead of the awfull Tim Allen, they gave the always awesome Kurt Russell. However, even with Kurt Russell, the whole thing still remained pretty average. First of all, for this movie, the lead was played by Michael Angarano who was just really not charismatic enough. Eventually, 10 years later, the guy would show up in ā€˜The Knickā€™, the amazing TV-show directed by Steven Soderbergh, and I thought he was really good this time around. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though the whole thing had some potential, I was still rather bored during the whole thing and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look.Ā

A classic

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 20 May 2011 12:39 (A review of Night of the Living Dead)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was really eager to check it out again. Before watching this flick the first time around, since it was such a classic, I had some rather huge expectations. Well, to be honest, I was a little bit disappointed by the whole thing back then. Basically, after waiting all these years, I finally saw the damned thing but, even though I did like it,Ā to be honest,Ā I wasn't exactly blown away though. I mean, sure, it was well done and entertaining and I definitely could see how it must have been frightening for the audience back in 1968. I could see as well how it had influenced all the horror movies which came afterwards, especially in the zombie genre, but in my opinion, the whole thing didnā€™t grow old very well. Of course, it is rather unfair since this movie must have been quite groundbreaking when it was released but, after all these years, I have seen so many more movies dealing with the same subject and some of them actually had a much stronger impact on me. Basically, as far as I'm concerned, it feels like a vintage version of 'The Walking Dead' but not much more than that, to be honest. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didnā€™t really blow me away, it is still a major classic and it is pretty much a must see for any decent movie lover, especially if you are a fan of the genre.Ā Ā

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 20 May 2011 10:19 (A review of Just Married)

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much with this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. I have nothing against Ashton Kutcher, in fact, he displayed some potential in ā€˜That '70s Showā€™ but, unfortunately, the guy turned out to have a rather underwhelming. In my opinion, eventually, he will be mostly remembered for managing to get married not only with Demi Moore by also with Mila Kunis. Concerning the late Brittany Murphy, I always had a weak spot for this actress and she was once again really charming in this movie but she was not helped by this poor script and the poor directing... In fact, I saw most of the movies directed by Shawn Levy and, except for ā€˜Real Steelā€™ which turned out to be at least decent, all his other directing efforts were in fact seriously underwhelming. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, there was barely anything funny at all which was rather distressing when you consider that it was actually a romantic comedy. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, the whole thing was still pretty weak so I donā€™t think it is really worth a look and worth your time.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 19 May 2011 11:15 (A review of Bulletproof Monk)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this movie, I thought it looked pretty lame and I wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing. Eventually, I think it was on the TV so I probably thought I might as well check it out. Well, I wasn't expecting much from this flick and and, indeed, I didn't get much... Indeed, the story was boring and completely predictable, the dialogues were lame and the special effects were weak and looked very cheap. Futhermore, Seann William Scott played his usual obnoxious smart ass and I hope Chow Yun Fat got a big fat check for his performance otherwise I don't see any reason why he should have been involved in this. Above all, the most annoying thing about this flick was that, with such a title, you might think you would get some kind of over-the-top preposterous action flick which could have been pretty cool but, even in this area, the damned thing still turned out to be really disappointing. To conclude, I think my rating was actually rather generous here, the whole thing was pretty weak and I donā€™tĀ  think it is worth a look or worth your time.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 18 May 2011 10:42 (A review of Eight Below)

To be honest, I was expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching the damned thing. In 2016, Disney has managed to become the first studio to reach $7 billion in one single year, thanks to their various successful brands like Marvel and Star Wars. However, before that, they used to struggle with their family features and most of them were actyally pretty lame. With this in mind, I didnā€™t expect much from this flick but, to my surprise, I thought it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, first of all, the Antartica just looked awesome and they displayed here some really gorgeous landscapes in this movie. Furthermore, what was even more surprising was the fact that the dramatic scenes involving the dogs worked surprisingly well and, as a result, the damned thing was actually quite entertaining. Obviously, Jason Biggs was rather annoying but his characters in all his movies are rather obnoxious but I have to admit that I was actually rather surprised by Paul Walker as the guy finally managed to deliver a decent performance here. So, to conclude, it is definitely not a masterpiece and not a realistic picture but I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā
