A bad movie

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 16 April 2011 11:52 (A review of Surviving Christmas)

Obviously, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but I still wanted to check it out. Honestly, I thought it was not as bad as I expected but, of course, it was still rather lame. Back in those days, Ben Affleck was pretty much in a dark place, all his movies were either commcercial or critical flops (usually both) and the guy was considered by many as the worst actor in the world. Personally, I always thought that the guy was not such a bad actor but, to think that he would win the Best Picture Academy award 8 years later (already his 2nd one following ‘Good Will Hunting’) was completely unexpected. Still, there is no denying that this movie was pretty horrible, probably the worst thing involving Ben Affleck. To be honest, I think the Christmas comedy is probably one of the worst genres and, to make things worse, this movie might be one of the lowest points in an already weak genre. Basically, the biggest issue with this flick is that the concept behind was not remotely funny, interesting or entertaining at all. To conclude, it pretty much deserves its lousy reputation and I would suggest you to avoid it.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 8 months ago on 16 April 2011 06:59 (A review of The Last Legion)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though my expectations were rather low concerning the damned thing, I was still amazed about how disappointing it turned out to be. Indeed, the story, the dialogues, the acting, everything was seriously really weak and tedious to watch. Concerning Colin Firth, it is understandable that the guy wanted to try something completely different than his previous work and I think he did what he could do so he shouldn’t be blamed for the end-result. Eventually, I felt above all bad for for Aishwarya Rai. Indeed, I thought it was pretty neat that she was for once showing up in a Western production (apparently, she barely does any movies outside Bollywood)  and it’s such a pity that she picked up such an average feature...  At least, I got to see one of the most gorgeous women in the world in action and without her, it would have been a complete waste of time to watch this movie. Anyway, to conclude, even though the whole thing actually had some potential, it turned out to be pretty weak and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 15 April 2011 09:32 (A review of The Borrowers)

Before watching this flick, I thought it was a live-action of this cartoon I used to watch when I was a kid called ‘Les Minipouss’ but, in fact, this TV-show was adapted on a completely different book called ‘The Littles’ with a very similar plot which was written later. Anyway, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but I still ended up watching the damned thing. Eventually, I thought it was actually a decent familly feature. Sure, there was nothing brilliant whatsoever about the whole thing was rather well done. Indeed, at the time, it got some pretty good reviews because it looked really good and, indeed, even though the plot was rather generic, the whole thing looked actually pretty neat. While making some research, I discovered that the critically acclaimed animated feature ‘Kari-gurashi no Arietti’ is actually based on the same book (which was actually pretty obvious when you think about it for a few seconds…) and I will definitely check it out when I have the opportunity. To conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it was a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you have some young children who needs to entertained.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 15 April 2011 09:19 (A review of Married to the Mob)

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since I have weak spot for Jonathan Demme’s work, I was quite eager to check this movie. On top of that, there was a really nice cast (Michelle Pfeiffer, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Modine, Oliver Platt, Dean Stockwell, Nancy Travis) so I thought it could be an interesting watch. Apparently, when it was released, it received some pretty good reviews but, to be honest, I thought it was a rather peculiar comedy and I’m not sure I really enjoyed it. I mean, it is basically a really goofy farce, almost a parody of your usual gangter features, there were some really over-the-top characters and I’m afraid it was a little too daft for my taste. Still even though it wasn’t really my kind of comedy, I have to admit that there were still some good things here. For example, Michelle Pfeiffer was as charming as always, she gave an acclaimed lead performance and there is no doubt that the whole thing was quite original. To conclude, even though it wasn’t really a great picture, it was still an decent feature and it is definitely worth a look though, especially if you are interested in Jonathan Demme’s work.

An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since the ratings were pretty decent, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of those supernatural Stephen King stories but, I have to admit it, this movie was actually rather well made. Personally, I find it difficult to take such a prespoterous story really seriously but even though there was nothing remotely extraordinary happening in this movie, I thought it was still pretty entertaining. Indeed, the whole thing looked pretty good and John Cusack gave a solid performance. That’s the issue with this kind of movies, you have to stop your brain for the whole duration and enjoy the mood and the weird stuff going on on the screen (not really my strongest point, to be honest) and then it is actually a fun ride but like most of the fantastical works coming from Stephen King, I find it rather shallow and I would rather have something more substancial like ‘Stand by Me’ ot ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. Still, to conclude, even though I’m not a huge fan, I have to admit that it is actually a decent flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 15 April 2011 09:06 (A review of Volunteers (1985))

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick since I have a weak spot for Tom Hanks, I thought I might as well check it out. Basically, it was one of those typical Tom Hanks comedies he used to make at the beginning of his career, the kind of movies he used to make before showing up ‘Philadelphia’ and before becoming a famous dramatic actor. Nowadays, this flick is pretty much forgotten and it is mostly remembered as the movie during which Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson started their romance which is still going strong 30 years later. It says a lot about the quality of the movie itself. Basically, they wanted to make some kind of spoofs about the peace corps and even though the director Nicholas Meyer thought it was a great idea, I thought it was a rather lame concept. They also made some fun of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ but those attempts were just as underwhelming as the rest. In its genre, it is definitely not the best thing Tom Hanks did back then when he was just starting up and you should watch it only if you are a big fan of his work.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 15 April 2011 08:46 (A review of The Ex)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a really nice cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, it is not very often that I came across such a lame comedy wasting such talented actors. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for Zach Braff, Jason Bateman and Amanda Peet but there was no way that they could make this work. I mean, right from the start, the whole concept of the guy faking to be handicapped felt more misguided than really funny and the makers never managed to turn this into something really entertaining. Concerning Zach Braff, I have to admit it that I have actually never seen ‘Scrubs’ but I really loved ‘Garden State’ and since ‘The Last Kiss’ turned out to be actually not bad at all, I hoped that this movie would be at least a decent watch but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Concerning the lovely Amanda Peet, it would unfortunately be another misguided choice and she would slowly disappear during the following 10 years. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen worse, it was still a pretty weak comedy and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 15 April 2011 08:39 (A review of Milk)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had this movie on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. To be honest, before watching this movie, I have to admit that, even though I had had heard about Harvey Milk, I didn’t know much about the guy so, only for this, it was an incredibly valuable picture that allowed me to get more acquainted with this fascinating man. Concerning the movie itself, sure, it turned to be a rather straightforward biopic but the material was so strong that it didn't bother me. As a result, it is probably one of the most accessible movies delivered by Gus Van Sant so far but, at least, it was miles better than the rather overrated 'Good Will Hunting' which is still considered by IMDb as his best movie. Back then, everybody was pretty much expecting Mickey Rourke to win the Academy Award for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his amazing performance in 'The Wrestler'  but Sean Penn eventually did win the damned thing. Well, even though some might think he robbed Rourke of a well deserved Academy award, I thought he was still impressive in this movie and he showed again that he was, at the time, one of the best actors around. Anyway, to conclude, it was a really strong biopic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Harvey Milk.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 13 April 2011 11:36 (A review of The Nanny Diaries)

Even though I didn't have some really high expectations for this movie, unfortunately, it still turned out to be disappointing. In fact, it is only after watching the damned thing that I discovered that the directors (Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini) were also responsible for the awesome 'American Splendor'. Basically, 'American Splendor' was an original, gripping, spellbinding little indie gem whereas this second directing effort was just lazy, unimaginative and seriously tedious to watch. Indeed, in spite of the interesting cast (Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, Paul Giamatti, Alicia Keys), I was rather bored by the whole thing.  In fact, I thought that two characters  involved were just completely despicable (Mr X and Mrs X). I have noticed that Roger Ebert was slightly more more enthousiast about it than I was but I thought the whole thing was just downright average. Fortunately, after this movie, Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini would deliver 'The Extra man' which has been praised by some of my favorite listal members so I will definitely check it out at some point. Anyway, to conclude, I still think this movie had some potential but, at the end of the day, it remains a really average flick and it is not really worth a look whatsoever.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 13 April 2011 08:40 (A review of The King's Speech (2010))

To be honest, even though I heard some pretty good things about this flick, I have to admit that I didn't have some very high expectations concerning this movie. Indeed, even he fact that it was chosen as the best movie of the year by the Academy of Motion Picture didn't mean, for me, that it was actually an actual masterpiece. In my opinion, the Academy voters have always been suckers for such historical true stories. Eventually, I have to admit that it was, indeed, a rather impressive movie. Basically, the directing was pretty good but most of all, I was blown away by the performance provided by Colin Firth and he definitely deserved his oscar. Geoffrey Rush was amazing as well and they both fascinated me throughout the whole thing. Of course, the plot was hardly original (they started with an issue which seemed unsolvable, they struggled a little bit, they found a solution, there were some complications but, at the end, everything was fine...) but it was very well told and it was quite efficient. To conclude, it is a very well made historical drama with a top cast and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
