To be honest, even though I heard some pretty good things about this flick, I have to admit that I didn't have some very high expectations concerning this movie. Indeed, even he fact that it was chosen as the best movie of the year by the Academy of Motion Picture didn't mean, for me, that it was actually an actual masterpiece. In my opinion, the Academy voters have always been suckers for such historical true stories. Eventually, I have to admit that it was, indeed, a rather impressive movie. Basically, the directing was pretty good but most of all, I was blown away by the performance provided by Colin Firth and he definitely deserved his oscar. Geoffrey Rush was amazing as well and they both fascinated me throughout the whole thing. Of course, the plot was hardly original (they started with an issue which seemed unsolvable, they struggled a little bit, they found a solution, there were some complications but, at the end, everything was fine...) but it was very well told and it was quite efficient. To conclude, it is a very well made historical drama with a top cast and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
A very good movie

An average movie
Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 12 April 2011 07:36 (A review of Donkey Punch)At some point, I came across this movie, I had never heard of anything like a āDonkey Punchā before and, as a result, probably because Iām a closeted pervert, I got really intrigued by this movie. So, I really didn't know what to expect from this flick but the beginning turned out to be actually quite promising. Indeed, the general progression was not bad at all until the expected moment which was, after all, rather underwhelming. I mean, do you really believe that someone could die like this?!? I mean, if they picked up a huge guy maybe it would have been more believable but, instead, they picked up the smallest boy from this group... Anyway, after this fatal scene, Ā the movie became just more and more tedious to watch and, very fast, I kind of lost all interest in the damned thing. On top of that, I didnāt help that the involved actors were not really good. Itās really too bad because the steamy tension at the beginning wasĀ actuallyĀ rather well done but I really had a hard time to care about the rest of the movie. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of a promising concept, it was unfortunately poorly developed and I donāt think it is really worth a look.Ā

A nice little movie
Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 12 April 2011 07:16 (A review of Last Chance Harvey (2008))I wasnāt really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, it was nothing really exceptional but it was just so nice to see Hoffman and Thompson finally playing leads, after being stuck for years playing some supporting roles. Well, they didnāt disappoint me as they both delivered some strong performances for this picture. Furthermore, I thought it was really neat to see a movie dealing with a couple a little bit older than your average couple. Indeed, even though our Western civilization is getting older and older, the average Hollywood movie always focuses on the same boring young attractive people and it is very rare that they tell a story about some elderly people so only for this, I thought it was a refreshing picture. Itās too bad that the story itself was not really strong and, in my opinion, this movie didn't give these fine actors much space to play around with their characters. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was quite enjoyable and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 11 April 2011 08:18 (A review of Rachel Getting Married)I wasnāt really sure what to expect from this movie but since I always had a weak spot for Jonathan Demmeās work, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, I was positively surprised by the damned thing, I thought it was really strong and Iām surprised it didnāt get more love when it was released. The first thing I enjoyed about this movie was the way they displayed this wedding. Indeed, it must have been the first time I ever saw such a realistic wedding in a movie. Seriously, it felt like a documentary and it was just really awesome. The other thing I loved was the way all the characters were very well written and nuanced. Indeed, they were sometimes nice but then later on they would be seriously annoying and, as a result, they always felt like some real human beings which was just very refreshing. Also, with this movie I finally saw Anne Hathaway showing some actual acting chops and, from that point, Ā I finally started to understand why Christopher Nolan picked her up for āThe Dark Knight Risesā. Anyway, to conclude, I thought it was a very good drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie
Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 10 April 2011 08:07 (A review of The Life and Death of Peter Sellers)First, of all, I have to admit that I donāt have a huge knowledge about Peter Sellersās work. Indeed, Ā I have seen just a couple of the movies starring this actor so it might seem weird but even though I didnāt know much about his work, since there was a pretty cool cast involved in this movie, I still wanted to check it out. Well, thanks to this movie,Ā I have to admit that I got really intrigued and I'm really anxious to see his movies. Eventually, the cast was indeed really neat (Geoffrey Rush, Charlize Theron, Emily Watson, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, Stephen Fry) and I was above all really impressed by Geoffrey Rush who delivered another strong performance here. Concerning the directing, it was decent but nothing really great, Iām afraid. Eventually, after watching a movie like this one, you wonder what was in fact the most important thing about this actor, his life or his movies? Well, Iām afraid, his work was actually more interesting but I still enjoyed this movie anyway. To conclude, even though it was nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was still a decent biopic and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Peter Sellers.Ā

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 9 April 2011 11:03 (A review of Blue Streak)What the hell happened to Martin Lawrence? Indeed, his last movie was released already 5 years ago and it was the abysmal āBig Mommas: Like Father, Like Sonā and his last hit was almost a decade ago with āWild Hogsā. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this flick. Indeed, I have never been a huge fan of Martin Lawrence Ā and there was no one else really interesting involved in this movie. Anyway, I wasn't expecting much from this damned thing but I have to admit that it was actually not bad at all after all. As I mentioned before, I never cared much for Martin Lawrenceās work so far but he actually delivered a solid performance in this movie and I thought the whole thing turned out to be fairly entertaining. Of course, the story was nothing really original and it was all very predictable but I thought it was actually rather well done. Anyway, to conclude, I though it was a decent watch and I think it is Ā worth a look especially if you like the genre and if you're looking for something not too challenging to watch.

Posted : 13 years, 9 months ago on 9 April 2011 10:04 (A review of The Golden Child)By now, somehow, I have managed to watch all the movies starring Eddie Murphy (all right, I have to admit it, I havenāt watch āMr. Churchā but Iām not really optimistic.). Well, the guy must have had one of the most disappointing careers ever and I would be really surprised if he would eventually manage to make a come-back at some point. Anyway, even back in the 80ās, when Murphy used to be one of the biggest movie stars in the world, some of his movies were actually already pretty weak and this movie was a fine example. Indeed, even though it did make some money at the box-office, it was rather poorly received and I thought it was indeed a rather weird movie. Basically, it was some kind of awkward combination involving comedy, action, adventure and even some paranormal stuff. Unfortunately, this combination didn't work at all. Apparently, this project started out as some kind of adventure feature like āIndiana Jonesā but when Eddie Murphy came on board, they decided to add his trademark humor which was such a bad idea. To conclude, even though I have seen much worse coming from this actor, it was still pretty weak and I donāt think it is worth a look.Ā
