An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 29 April 2011 11:58 (A review of The Transporter)

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since I heard a lot of good things about it, I was quite  eager to check it out. First of all, I really loved the introduction. The tone was perfect, Jason Statham was really bad-ass and it was an impressive and very well shot action scene (since it is a Besson production, it wasn’t really surprising). But then, unfortunately, it was the only scene that really impressed me... I mean, the rest of the movie was not bad and fairly entertaining, but honestly, I thought  it was just some generic action stuff which I have already seen 1000 times before. Sure, it was well done but, in my opinion, it was not really exciting and, as a matter of fact, almost boring. It is quite a pity because the whole thing definitely had some potential but, as usual with Luc Besson, they didn’t care much about the story or the concept and just wanted to show some bad-ass action scenes. To conclude, even though it is a decent flick, it is nothing really special but you may end up enjoying it more than I did if you are a huge action movies fan.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 29 April 2011 11:45 (A review of Little Black Book)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since there was a decent cast, I thought I might as well give it a try. Unfortunately, in spite of the interesting cast including one very charming actress (the late Brittany Murphy), one of the best actresses around (Holly Hunter) but also Kathy Bates, Rashida Jones and Josie Maran, the movie really failed to entertain me. Indeed, I thought that the whole concept was actually pretty inane and I wasn't at all fascinated by this all "black book" thing. Maybe, I'm too old for that sh*t but, even so, in our modern age when pretty much everyone is walking around with their smartphone, such pdas seem rather old-fashioned. Anyway, I guess the makers thought that the whole thing could be some satire about our modern world (my guess why such a good actress like Holly Hunter would get involved in such a project or maybe she simpy got a fat paycheck) but the tone was just way too light for the whole thing to be taken seriously. To conclude, I thought it was a very average flick and I don’t think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of Brittany Murphy.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 29 April 2011 11:04 (A review of Guest House Paradiso)

Honestly, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since there was some interesting actors involved, I thought I might as well give it a try. Indeed, even though I was mostly attracted by the supporting cast (Vincent Cassel, Bill Nighy, Simon Pegg, Sophia Myles), apparently, the big attraction were the two leads (Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson) who were supposedly really famous in England but I have never heard of them before. Basically, it was one of those really surrealist and over-the-top comedies where crazy stuff happen every 30 seconds. At the end of the day, you're either a fan of the genre or you're not and, to be honest, I can’t say I’m. Indeed, the issue with this kind of humor, in my opinion, is that it works fine for a short sketch but, usually, with a full feature film format, it is just way too random, it goes absolutely nowhere and it tends to get on my nerves at some point. Anyway, to conclude, all in all, I thought it was still not bad at all and even though it was nothing really amazing, it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 29 April 2011 10:56 (A review of I Am Legend)

Even though the reception for this movie was rather mixed, since it was a huge success at the box-office, I was really eager to watch it. Eventually, I thought it was not bad at all. Of course, it is not a masterpiece whatsoever but for a popcorn movie, I thought it was really entertaining. Indeed, in my opinion, Will Smith was quite convincing with a very good performance and, at the time, he was one of the few big movie stars who could produce an entertaining blockbuster with still a certain amount of depth. Since then, he has pretty much lost his mojo (showing up in a movie directed my M. Night Shyamalan was definitely not a smart move). Anyway, coming back our main feature, I didn't think that the special effects were as bad as many said. In fact, I thought it was actually visually pretty impressive, especially the beginning. Furthermore, the story kept me on the edge until the end so what else should we ask for? To conclude, of course, it is nothing revolutionary but compared to any blockbuster, it is actually pretty good, I personally enjoyed it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 27 April 2011 02:28 (A review of Idle Hands)

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jessica Alba, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, I thought that the whole concept of the possessed hand was just a rather stupid idea, right from the start, so it was rather difficult for me to really like this flick. Of course, I understand that it wasn’t supposed to be taken seriously but the biggest issue is that it wasn’t entertaining either. Eventually, I have to admit it, I did enjoy 2 things with this flick though. First of all, there was Elden Henson in it. The guy is completely unknown but also definitely underrated in my book and it is always a treat when he is on screen and this movie was no exception. The second thing was that Jessica Alba did look pretty good at the time. I know, that’s not much but, like I said before, the story was neither funny or scary, in fact, it was actually rather predictable and boring. To conclude, I though it was pretty weak and I don’t think it is worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

A bad movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 27 April 2011 02:08 (A review of Ice Princess)

Not so long ago, before Disney bought Marvel and Star Wars, this company was mostly known for such harmless and rather underwhelming familly features. To be honest, I don't really remember how I ended up watching this flick (it was probably with the kids, I guess, when you're in trouble, always blame them!). Anyway, even for a familly feature, I thought it was still pretty bad. I mean, the plot was completely predictable and not entertaining at all and the whole thing was just completely boring, at least, that’s my opinion. The only interesting thing was maybe to see Hayden Panettiere when she was much younger and before she reached fame with 'Heroes'. A part from that, it was some pretty standard stuff and it was not really entertaining, I'm afraid. For Michelle Trachtenberg, after the amazing but really heavy ‘Mysterious Skin’ and the rather raunchy and lame ‘EuroTrip’, to go back to a Disney familly friendly feature, it seemed rather like a big step back and, to be honest, she hasn’t done anything really amazing during the following decade. Anyway, to conclude, in my opinion, it is not worth your time whatsoever, except maybe if you are a very young girl who needs to be entertained.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 27 April 2011 02:04 (A review of The Ipcress File)

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this flick but since I have always had a weak spot for Michael Caine, I was quite eager to check out. Indeed,in my opinion, Michael Caine is a great actor and back then in the 60's, he was in his golden period. In fact, in this movie, it would be the first time that he would play Harry Palmer, one of his most iconic roles (he would eventually play this character 5 times but I haven’t seen any of those sequels yet). This movie is a rather typical but still a very well done spy movie taking place during the Cold War and Caine was awesome as usual. Apparently, this movie would be in fact a big influence on the ‘Mission: Impossible’ TV show that would start the following year. To be honest, I did see this movie on the BBC and, without subtitles, I’m afraid I missed about a 1/3 of the dialogs so maybe that’s why I wasn’t completely blown away by the whole thing. Anyway, to conclude, even though it wasn’t really groundbreaking, I still think it was a solid spy feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 27 April 2011 01:59 (A review of Road Trip (2000))

Following the massive success of 'Joker', I thought I might as well rewatch Todd Phillips directing debut. To be honest, the fact that I’m not a huge fan of this usually absymal genre probably didn’t help so I wasn't expecting much from this flick but I have to admit that it was after all a decent raunchy comedy. Indeed, even if I was expecting maybe something more after hearing so many good things about this movie, at the end of the day, it was not bad at all (at least, it was miles better than the really awful ‘Euro Trip’). Still, there was nothing really original and nothing I haven't seen several times before. It also always difficult to enjoy anything involving the terribly obnoxious Tom Green but I have to admit that his movie was actually quite entertaining. Indeed, right from his first directing effort, Phillips displayed he could handle the R rated comedy genre very well and many jokes were just quite hilarious. On a side note, it is interesting to note that Seann William Scott managed to start his career back-to-back with ‘American Pie’, ‘Final Destination ‘ and this movie and, even though I might be the first to argue that all these movies were nothing really amazing, they all become eventually some cult-classics. Anyway, to conclude, I have to admit it, it was still actually a decent watch and if you're a big fan of such teen comedies like 'American Pie', you should definitely check it out and you may end up enjoying it even more than I did.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 27 April 2011 09:49 (A review of Infamous)

Around 2005-2006, they released 2 movies about Truman Capote. One was ‘Capote’  which turned out to be a massive critical success and this was the other movie but it was barely noticed when it was released. Well, to be honest, even though it was a decent watch, it was indeed not as good as ‘Capote’ . Still, it doesn’t mean that it was a bad movie. Indeed, for example,  the cast  was pretty neat (Sigourney Weaver, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock, Isabella Rossellini, Jeff Daniels, Daniel Craig). Furthermore, the directing was solid as well. However, I didn’t care much for the abrupt change of tone. Indeed, at some point, the whole thing was rather funny and then, suddenly, it would become rather bleek and then funny again. The best scene to describe this movie would be actually the very first one. Indeed, it looked quite gorgeous, the acting was fine fine but what on earth did it have to do with the rest of the movie?!? Pretty much nothing, I’m afraid. Also, the ‘interviews’ were a weak idea and it gave the whole thing a bad fake documentary feeling. To conclude, it was not a great picture but it remains a fascinating story so I think it is still definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 27 April 2011 07:58 (A review of A Hard Day's Night)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it was on the list ‘1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I have to admit it, even though I have some huge respect for their legacy, I have actually never been a big fan of the Beattles and I never really cared for their music. Still, even so , I thought it was actually a rather enjoyable feature. To be honest, I wasn't really able to follow the whole thing as it was in English without subtitles and the accents were sometimes rather thick but, obviously, this movie was not really about the plot or the dialogues either. At the time, it was a surprising box-office hit and many bands tried later on to release some similar movies like this one but most of them were some massive flops (the worse one being probably ‘Spice World’). Anyway, to conclude, even though this movie didn’t seem to be something for me, I thought it was actually pretty cool and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are a fan of the most famous band that ever existed.
