A very bad movie

Posted : 13 years, 10 months ago on 26 February 2011 07:51 (A review of Fall Down Dead)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. Well, I wasn't expecting much from this movie but since my wife has a weak spot for thrillers, we ended up watching this one together but the end-result was rather pathetic. Was there actually anything any good in this flick ?!? Not really... Indeed, the story was bad,  the directing was really weak and the acting was not really better, I’m afraid. Should I add something else? Concerning Dominique Swain, she made a interesting debut with ‘Face/Off’ and ‘Lolita’, both released the same year but, even though she has been steadily working ever since, most of her movies have been such obscure and underwhelming direct-to-DVD garbage. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, the whole thing was a total waste of time and it should be avoided at all costs.

A fun ride

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 16 February 2011 09:12 (A review of Planet Terror)

After watching ‘Grindhouse’, I thought I might as well check out this full version as well. Indeed, since 'Grindhouse' was a flop in North America, they decided to release the movies separately in the rest of the world which was a terrible mistake, in my opinion. Indeed, even though 'Planet Terror' was, in my opinion by far, the best part in 'Grindhouse', I thought this full version was rather disappointing and completely unnecessary. Basically, it didn't add anything really interesting to the story and, in my opinion, there was barely no difference between the short version displayed in ‘Grindhouse’ and this longer version. On top of that, even though it was quite entertaining the first time around, I’m not sure if it really required a 2nd watch. Still, it remains was a fun ride, no doubt about it. Indeed, obviously, the whole thing was completely over-the-top but it was supposed to be that way. As I mentioned before, I think it is really better than ‘Death Proof’ but if you have the choice, you should watch ‘Grindhouse’ instead because that’s how those movies were supposed to be watched in the first place. To conclude, even though I think this movie is completely unnecessary, it is actually pretty cool and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 16 February 2011 07:57 (A review of The Suburbans (1999))

Before watching this movie, I wasn't expecting much but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Unfortunately, even with those low expectations, after 5 minutes, I was already bored to death by the whole thing. Indeed, it was actually a very lame and rather stupid concept (the ending made eventually the whole thing even worse.... I mean, you are supposed to believe that Jennifer Love Hewitt who became a music executive, had actually a crush on the band when she was a kid and that's the only reason why she deciced to promote this band??! It was seriously really too far-fetched for me, sorry...) . Concerning Jennifer Love Hewitt, after 20 years in the business, I think we can all agree that she is one of the cutest girls around (she seems to look even better as she gets older) but I have noticed that most of the her movies are usually such obscure and really lame productions. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, the only redeeming feature was probably Ben Stiller who was pretty funny but he was there only for 5 minutes. It was also rather neat to see Will Ferrell before he became famous. Still, a part from that, it was a really average comedy and it is not really worth a look, I'm afraid.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 15 February 2011 08:32 (A review of Swing Vote)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kevin Costner, I thought I might as well check it out. Unfortunately, the whole thing turned out to be a major disappointment. Indeed, I'm actually a real sucker for movies dealing with politics and I do think that this movie actually had some potential. Unfortunately, the topic was just poorly developed and this movie was just plain average. First of all, I'm really annoyed by those movies where the parent is supposed to be some kind of complete moron but, somehow,  their kid turns out to be a real genius.. Seriously, it is just a really tedious and unrealistic gimmick. In this case, it was even more annoying as this supposedly stupid father was played by Kevin Costner. Indeed I like this actor, he is a really charming actor but that was exactly the issue here. Indeed, the guy was just way too damned charming to play this part. Eventually, I would have worked better with someone like Billy Bob Thornton playing his usual despicable SOB performance. Anyway, even if you would put this aside, the story was still pretty weak. To conclude, the whole thing felt like a missed opportunity and, eventually, I don’t think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 14 February 2011 10:49 (A review of Fool's Gold)

It seems hard to believe that, not so long ago, Matthew McConaughey was mostly focusing his career on such movies. I mean, at least, you have to admit it, at first, this movie didn’t sound like a really bad idea. Indeed, Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson already worked together for ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ which was arguably McConaughey’s most watchable romantic-comedy. Unfortunately, even though it could have been something, the whole thing turned out to be just plain average. Basically, the main problem with this movie is that its main selling point was to have Kate Hudson in bikini and Matthew McConaughey shirtless through most of the running time. I mean, sure, they both looked fine but it was certainly not enough and the story and the jokes were just really weak. It’s too bad because such movies dealing treasure hunting can be a lot of fun but this one didn’t have much to offer, I’m afraid. Eventually, 3 years later, McConaughey would make an unexpected come-back with ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’ but we are waiting still for something really impressive from Kate Hudson. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, the whole thing was a rather shameless cash grab and even though I have seen worse, I don’t think it is really worth a look at all.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 12 February 2011 09:18 (A review of Semi-Pro)

When was the last time that Will Ferrell has released a successful comedy? I think it must have been ‘The Other Guys’ but even this movie actually turned out to be seriously disappointing, at least, as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, there was a point in his career that Will Ferrell made some kind of sports trilogy and, following ‘Talladega Nights’ and ‘Blades of Glory’, this would be his last sports-related comedy. Obviously, it was a basically one of those typical sport movies and it was really predictable. Indeed, the whole thing was about  a team of losers but after following some supposedly miraculous training, they became suddenly awesome winning all their games in the process. Anyway, it all depends if you can stand Will Ferrell or not. In my case, even though he can be pretty annoying, I think he is sometimes funny, at least he was back in those days. Furthermore, the supporting cast was pretty neat here (Woody Harrelson, André Benjamin, Maura Tierney, Will Arnett, Jackie Earle Haley, Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Wiig). To conclude, even though it might not be considered as one of the best comedies ever delivered by Will Ferrell, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A great movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 11 February 2011 02:15 (A review of Don't Look Now... We're Being Shot At! )

As a kid, I have seen this movie so many times. It is basically one of those movies that really formed my taste about movies when I was a child, pretty much like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, the dollar trilogy with Clint Eastwood or the kung fu flicks starring Bruce Lee. Indeed, I just loved this flick and it is probably the best French comedy ever made, at least, in my opinion. Back in those days, I think I have seen my share of comedies starring Louis de Funès and even though I thoroughly enjoyed them at such a young age, looking back at them, they were actually pretty lame sometimes. Not this one though. Back then, de Funès was a mega star in France, even when I was a kid, he was still an icon even after his death. Basically, he was a late bloomer but, at some point, he became really successful, making one box-office hit after the other and this movie was his biggest success. Indeed, it is an hilarious tale taking place in WWII and for this movie, de Funès was again working with Bourvil, another icon of the French cinema, and together, they were just hilarious. After all these years, I finally saw the damned thing again and I still loved it, even as a grown-up. To conclude, this movie is a childhood favorite and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A great classic

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 11 February 2011 02:11 (A review of Elevator to the Gallows)

It was Louis Malle's first movie and his first movie was already a masterpiece. A great film noir with a very famous soundtrack provided by Miles Davis.

A great classic

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 11 February 2011 12:59 (A review of The Grand Illusion)

It has been a while since I saw this flick but since it is such a classic, I was really eager to re-watch it. Honestly, it didn't expect to be blown away like this. I mean, I enjoyed it back then but I didn't remember that it was that good. This is indeed a true masterpiece directed by Jean Renoir and I thought it was just brilliant and worked on so many levels. Indeed, not only it is a great war drama, one of the best ever made, but there are also some thrilling escaping schemes and even some hilarious bits here and there. One of the thing I appreciated the most is that there was no bad guy, on either side, which is something actually quite unique. Basically, they had to kill each other because it was their duty but without the war, they could have been friends. All those characters might seem rather stereotypical but they were all actually really 3 dimensional individuals and quite spellbinding to watch, especially von Rauffenstein portrayed by the great Erich von Stroheim. And, obviously, it is a movie which deals with illusions, that this war would be the last one, that all those people from different social backgrounds (working class, wealthy ( Jewish or not), aristocrats) would get along after the war as well as they did while they were fighting together and that the Aristocrats were not actually a dying specie. Basically, it is one of the best movies about the 1rst World War and simply one of the best movies produced back then. To conclude, it is a great masterpiece, one of the best French movies ever made and it is a must see for any decent movie buff.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 11 February 2011 06:38 (A review of Mouse Hunt)

Honestly, I had completely no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was Gore Verbinski’s directing debut, I was rather intrigued so I thought I should give it a try. Indeed, way before reaching box-office stardom with the Pirates of Carribean trilogy, Verbinski directed this flick. To be honest, it is a rather tough sell. Indeed, it seemed rather too quirky for the kids but it seemed also too childish for the grown-ups, the main characters were not portrayed by some huge stars and the story was pretty wacky. Still, even though it was indeed nothing remotely mind-blowing, I thought it actually was not bad at all. Indeed, the whole thing was just really over the top (which is actually a compliment in this case), there were a few funny scenes and, of course, since there was the almighty Christopher Walken in it, it was enough good reason for me to watch this movie and appreciate it for what it’s worth. Indeed, as usual, Walken came out seemingly from nowhere, gave one of this really weird performances and he completely stole the show in a few minutes. Eventually, to conclude, it was definitely nothing great and a little too absurd for my taste but I think it is still worth a look, especially if you wonder how it all started for Gore Verbinski.
