An interesting failure

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 7 February 2011 02:59 (A review of Birth)

Basically, it is one of those movies which, even though I know the whole thing was flawed, it was still quite fascinating and I was still rather fascinated somehow. Indeed, it did look really gorgeous, the directing was indeed quite amazing and Nicole Kidman gave a very a good perfomance and so did the rest of the cast. The story was really fascinating so what went wrong ? I think the main issue is that they tried too much to rationalize the plot, to rationalize something completely impossible so you ended up with this unsatisfactory ending. Also, after rewatching it, I noticed that the main focus was on the mood, which was great by the way, but as a result, you get the feeling that the whole thing is just about mood and no substance whatsoever. I mean, if you think about it for a few minutes, the whole thing was completely preposterous and that's why it was quite fascinating but it makes also it really difficult to sell it to the viewers and, in my opinion, they actually failed. Still, in spite these flaws, it had really some potential and I still think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An interesting movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 7 February 2011 02:54 (A review of A.I. Artificial Intelligence)

Being a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick, I was really anxious about seeing this movie. Eventually, there were definitely many things to enjoy here. First of all, the whole thing looked great, something always expected when Steven Spielberg is directing. Furthermore, I was rather captivated by the story and the cast was pretty good (Haley Joel Osment, Frances O'Connor, Jude Law, William Hurt). But unfortunately, it wasn't really great after all, I'm afraid. Indeed, basically, you miss the Kubrick touch, which means going the extra mile into the human psyche making this movie a real masterpiece. Instead, they always remained in the Spielberg comfort zone, with some great visuals but also with a weak, over-sentimental fluffy story. Eventually, my mistake is that I went there expecting a Kubrick feature but I got a Spielberg movie so I guess it was rather unfair from me. It is like comparing '2001' and 'E.T.'. I mean, in my case, I think that 'E.T.' is a nice little movie but it never came near the level of such a masterpiece like '2001'. To conclude, I have to admit that even though I was rather disappointed, it remains a very well made and intriguing SF flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 7 February 2011 10:05 (A review of Fanny and Alexander)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since it is a classic, I was quite eager to give it a second chance. Well, even if I was able to enjoy it slightly more this time around, to be honest, I still had a hard time to care for the damned thing though. Fist of all, I was surprised by how little I actually remembered this movie which wasn’t really a good sign. It’s interesting that the only thing I did remember was when Alexander, Fanny and their mother went to live with Edvard Vergerus but, somehow, I think it does make sense. Indeed, even if Vergerus was definitely a dreadful guy, he was however the only fully developed character in this whole story and, therefore, the only one who made an impression on me. For example, at some point, Emilie made the decision to marry with Edvard but they never gave us any explanation why and, then, 5 mins later, she was complaining about her marriage and wanted out. As a result, it was rather difficult to root for her but it’s something that could be said about all the characters in this movie. Indeed, you spend more than 3 hours with them but you don’t really get to know any of them. At least, even he still remained an enigma, I was more able to appreciate the mysterious scenes involving Alexander who was an intriguing young boy. However, I still don’t get why his sister was mentioned in the title since she did so very little and had so little impact on everything happening around her. Anyway, this movie is obviously considered as a massive masterpiece, and, I guess, as far I’m concerned, it belongs to the category 'misunderstood masterpiece’. What I mean by that is that I was able to see all the craft behind it, I could see it was obviously a work of Art but I'm afraid I didn't really get it. Basically, there was a lot of symbolism that went just way over my head. I mean, during the whole thing I was scratching my head thinking 'What did he mean with all this?' and, honestly, at the end of the movie, I didn't get some answers. Still, such a challenging movie should always be praised when you see how simplistic and moronic are the movies produced by Hollywood and I will not a blame a movie because I just didn't get it. Anyway, to conclude, even though it is definitely an acquired taste, it is still a classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Ingmar Bergman's work.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 6 February 2011 01:58 (A review of Persepolis)

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I was really eager to check it out. Eventually, I turned out to be even better than expected and it is indeed a really unique and amazing animated feature. To be honest, I never had the opportunity to read the comic-book which sounds amazing as well but, apparently, it might be easier to appreciate this movie more if you haven’t read the book since they are so similar. Anyway, the story was just really interesting and sometimes actually quite heartbreaking. In spite all of this, they still managed to put some funny moments which was rather incredible, considering the rather dark topic. Eventually, it is also an incredibly valuable movie showing the life of Iran at the time. Basically, it was in fact a country which was fairly modern and progressive but fell into religious obscurantism after the general uprising against the Shah of Iran. The other interesting thing is that, when the main character got to Europe, she did enjoy the freedom there but she had actually a hard time to connect with the locals as they didn’t turn out to be so friendly at all. As a conclusion, even though the main character had a strong feeling for her home country, she still couldn’t accept the rules and values of this place but, after emigrating, she still felt alienated as well in this new place which is unfortunately the fate of many refugees. To conclude, I was really impressed by the damned thing, it is one of the very best animated features ever and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 6 February 2011 01:13 (A review of The Day The Earth Stood Still )

I had some rather low expectations concerning this movie but since I have a weak spot for Jennifer Connelly, I still wanted to check it out. First of all, I haven't seen the original movie so I can't compare them but I don't think this remake was that bad, at least the first time I watched it. Indeed, there were a lot of good ideas and it's a shame that they decided to not develop those ideas and instead put all their energy, time, attention in a big budget extravaganza. But you can say whatever you want about Keanu Reeves and his wooden acting but it is because of it that he was the perfect casting choice to play Klatuu. Unfortunately, Jennifer Connelly didn't have much to do except being the usual helpless beautiful female scientist. And the sub-plot involving her step-son was even more annoying but I don't think we should blame Jaden Smith. Eventually, I thought the conclusion was rather underwhelming and unconvincing and I don't think humanity will ever be able to change like they argue in this movie (just check what happened to the Aztecs, the Romans,...) even when we will be on the edge of total destruction. Still, like I said before, the whole thing looked pretty good and it was actually entertaining so I think it is worth a a look. Now, I really want to watch the original version...

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 6 February 2011 10:25 (A review of Black Swan (2010))

Before this movie was released, there was a huge buzz about it and since I'm a huge fan of Darren Aronofosky's work, I was really eager to check this flick. Eventually, I really loved it and even watched it twice in the movie theater which is something I haven't done for many years. Basically, Aronofosky displayed once again his versatility and after making an amazing movie about the wrestling world, he has now made an amazing movie about the ballet world. Seriously, it was just very impressive. The directing was indeed very good, Natalie Portman gave the best performance of her career and she definitely deserved her Academy Award. Eventually, in my opinion, it was just a fascinating picture which shares my views about Art. Indeed, in my opinion,  Art always goes with excess, violence, sex, it should push the boundaries and it can be highly destructive. My only complains with this movie would be that 'The Swan Lake', the actual ballet, is actually rather dull. Furthermore, since it was only 90 minutes, none of the supporting characters were really developed and I wish I had the chance to get to know them a little bit more. Still, it is and remains a fascinating picture and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Aronofosky's work.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 4 February 2011 11:29 (A review of He's Just Not That Into You)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for the romantic-comedies, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, the main asset with this movie was its impressive cast. Eventually, it turned out to be fairly entertaining  with a few nice scenes. Still, to make a fiction out of a self-help book seemed to be a rather misguided idea, even if this book was apparently a best-seller, but I thin the whole thing actually had some potential. Eventually, the main issue was that there were just way too many story-lines and, as a result, none of them was actually properly developed. In my opinion, it would have worked much better if they would focused the whole thing on 2 or 3 stories. In fact, it is gimmick that they have been using a lot lately in rom-coms, which is basically to have a whole bunch of sub-plots loosely linked with each other (see ‘What to Expect When You're Expecting’ also based on some self-help book, ‘Valentine’s day’, ‘Mother’s Day’, ‘New Year’s Eve’, ‘Think Like a Man’, …). I think this trend actually started with ‘Love Actually’ which must probably be one of the most overrated romantic-comedies ever made. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 4 February 2011 10:03 (A review of Corrina, Corrina)

Even though I didn't expect much from this flick, since I have a weak spot for Ray Liotta, I thought I should give it a try. At least, on the positive side, I must say it was pretty nice to see him doing something else than his usual psychos but, a part from that, I can't say I really enjoyed this movie though. Indeed, above all, the whole thing was just way too sentimental and predictable for me. I mean, they did try to develop an interracial love relationship and that's a noble cause but there was absolutely no depth concerning the characters and it made the whole thing rather tedious to watch. It’s too bad because the material was interesting but the serious lack of passion between these characters who were supposedly in love terribly hurt this picture. Concerning Whoopy Goldberg, it seems that she used to only show up in either some obnoxious comedies or some over-sentimental dramas like this one but, unsurprisingly, we don’t hear much from her anymore. Anyway, to conclude, I was kind of bored during the whole thing and I don’t think it is  really worth a look, except maybe if you want to see Ray Liotta doing something completely different than his usual stuff.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 3 February 2011 05:10 (A review of The Musketeer)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Peter Hyams’s movies, I thought I might as well check this one out. Eventually, the whole thing turned out to be a huge waste of time. I mean, seriously, this movie had barely anything to offer... The biggest mistake they made was giving the lead role to Justin Chambers. I mean, seriously, who was this guy?!? It’s actually pretty funny. Indeed, for the last 7 months, I have been binge-watching ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ with my wife and, in the mean time, I got used to see Justin Chambers a lot but, about 4 years ago, when I saw this movie, I had no idea who the hell this guy was. Since this movie was a massive flop, it seems that his career was pretty much doomed but he still managed to find something else to do apparently. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, there were 2 positive points though: first, Tim Roth was, as usual, very good as a bad guy. I feel sorry for him... The other good thing was the awesome fight on ladders at the end. Are those 2 things enough reasons to watch this movie ? I'm not so sure...

A lame movie

Posted : 13 years, 11 months ago on 3 February 2011 04:58 (A review of Inspector Gadget)

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still ended up watching it. When I was a kid, I thought the cartoon was pretty cool and, in fact, I didn’t even know what it was partially created by Jean Chalopin, a french guy who was responsible for some of the coolest cartoons released in the 80’s (The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Ulysses 31, The Littles, The Care Bears, Heathcliff, Jayce and The Wheeled Warriors, Dennis the Menace, MASK). Eventually, the cartoon was not really one of the my favorites anyway but , compared to this live-action version, it was actually pretty damned amazing. Indeed, this movie really bored me to death and you might wonder if live-action was actually the best format for this concept since it made the whole thing looked completely lame and stupid. I mean, even the always dependable Rupert Everett was able to save this and the whole thing about his character (Dr. Claw) is that you never see his face but just his arm, pretty much a trademark of the cartoon, but they just really ruined this. Anyway, the whole thing was just terribly underwhelming and it is really not worth a look whatsoever.
