So bad....

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 9 October 2010 06:39 (A review of Taxi 2)

How the hell did I actually ended up watching this flick?!? Indeed, I seriously despised the first installment and even though it was a massive success in France, I thought it was easily one of the most overrated movies ever produced so I should probably have avoided this sequel. The whole story was, in fact, that I was able to buy the 1st three movies on DVD and they were just 1 euro for each so I thought I might give this franchise a second chance after all. Well, the 2nd time around, I still hated it the first installment and this sequel was not really better or worse, I'm afraid. The worst thing about this flick, in my opinion, was how Marion Cotillard, probably the best French actress of the last decade, was completely wasted here. Indeed, she was probably the only redeeming feature in this whole franchise and, here,Ā  she was basically stuck at home waiting the whole freaking day that the lead character would come back. I mean, seriously?!? That's the best thing they could come up with for her? Anyway, after all these years, I still cannot understand how these movies got so popular in France. It really blows my mind. To conclude, in my opinion, Ā it is in fact some real garbage and you should definitely avoid it.

One of the best gangster movies

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 October 2010 09:08 (A review of GoodFellas (1990))

For many people, it remains the best movie made by Martin Scorsese and for some, it is even the best movie ever made. Personally, I think it is probably the first flick directed by Scorsese that I saw. Back then, I must been have 15-16 years old and, indeed, I thought it was just awesome. Whereas I had to watch the Godfather at least twice before I was really able to enjoy them, I loved this movie right away. Indeed, the whole thing was just full of energy and adrenaline, filled with conflicted and fascinating characters. Basically, it is a great movie and of course one of the best movies directed by Martin Scorsese. Still, as I grow older I must admit that, in the same genre, I tend to enjoy more The Godfather flicks than this one because they are more subtle and more cerebral in my opinion but it remains a great movie. The whole thing is just plain entertaining and completely fascinating and unfortunately, once again, back then, Martin Scorsese was ignored by the academy and, instead, the decent but not really great 'Dances with the wolves' ended up with the big prize... Anyway, to conclude, it is a classic, one of the best movies in this genre and a must see for any decent movie lover.

A nice little movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 8 October 2010 07:00 (A review of The Mighty)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. First of all, even though Sharon Stone was displayed prominently on all the promotional material, she had a rather small supporting part but, at least, this movie was definitely one of the best she did during her otherwise rather underwhelming career. Indeed, even though the whole thing was nothing really groundbreaking, it thought it was actually pretty good. Above all, I enjoyed a lot the performances provided by the two boys. In fact, I have to admit it that the story was nothing really amazing but those two boys were so good, they made the whole thing really emotional and actually quite beautiful to watch. To conclude, it was nothing great but it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 7 October 2010 01:31 (A review of The Girl in the Park (2007))

Following the failure that was ā€˜Superman Returnsā€™ (in my opinion, it wasnā€™t really so bad, especially if you compare it to something really awful like the recent ā€˜Fantastic Fourā€™), it seems that both Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey both managed to get away without much damage but you can't say the same for Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth as their respective career apparently never really recovered from the blow. Concerning Bosworth, this movie was the first one she made afterwards and it was in fact a perfect example of what she would do in the following decade which was basically showing up in some really obscure and not really interesting indie features that barely anyone watched at all. I mean, coming back to our main feature, it was in fact not bad and I thought it was rather well made with a very good performance delivered by Sigourney Weaver. Unfortunately, the story was really not focused enough and, eventually, the whole thing didnā€™t know where to go, Iā€™m afraid. This issue was above all really obvious with the end which was seriously underwhelming. To conclude, in spite of these flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A really weird movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 7 October 2010 01:26 (A review of Adam's Apples)

I remember it quite well, at one of my previous jobs, I was discussing movies with a colleague and, according to him, I should really check some Danish movies, including this one. To be honest, I donā€™t think I was completely blown away like my colleague was but I thought it was still pretty good. Above all, the cast and especially Mads Mikkelsen and Ulrich Thomsen gave some very good performances and the directing was solid as well. Still, even though I wasnā€™t completely sold out, I still kept thinking about the damned thing many days afterwards. Indeed, when you watch a movie, and the least crazy character happens to be a neo-nazi, then you should know you're watching a really weird movie. Basically, this movie mixes drama and comedy all at the same time (apparently, most viewers seems to agree that it is in fact a black comedy), and I was sometimes laughing my ass off, especially when this priest was being really slaughtered by this neo-nazi character.. Weird, weird, weird... But in a good way. Unfortunately, Iā€™m afraid that the end didnā€™t really work for me but, still, it was a very intriguing movie and it is definitely worth a look.

A pretty good movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 7 October 2010 01:18 (A review of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps)

Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick. Indeed, most sequels are disappointing and, frankly, I never thought that the original was that amazing. I mean, it was a good flick, that's for sure, but I never thought it was really brilliant. Still, I always had a weak spot for Oliver Stone's work, plus, I just loved the idea of seeing Michael Douglas returning to his most iconic character, Gordon Gekko. Eventually, I really liked the damned thing. I mean, in my opinion, the financial deals and the whole mood of the movie were just great and it was enough for me to be sold. Furthermore, I thought that Michael Douglas and Shia Labeouf both gave some pretty good performances. Unfortunately, I have to admit it, the story was not always really sharp and there were plenty of things that just didn't work. The first thing that pop to my mind is the fact that Shia Labeouf had a romantic relationship with Douglas's daughter. I mean, that was rather convoluted and not interesting whatsoever. The other really weak point was that they didn't really know this time what to do with Gordon Gekko. I mean, should he be a bad guy or a good guy? Since the makers couldn't make up their mind, they kept switching back and forth and it was rather annoying. Still, I liked this flick because the business side was just damned fascinating. There is a good chance that a re-watch would eventually drop my rating though. Still, to conclude, I thought it was actually pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

My favorite documentary

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 6 October 2010 09:20 (A review of Bowling for Columbine)

Nowadays, we donā€™t hear much from Michael Moore but there was a time when the guy was the most successful documentary maker in the world. Basically, it is with this movie that he got his breakthrough and, even though I always enjoyed his work, this movie was much better than anything he has ever done before or after his career. Indeed, the whole thing was just fascinating to behold and I would go as far as saying that it is pretty much my favorite documentary. I mean, sure, Iā€™m well aware of the fact that Michael Moore has been accused of being dishonest and of manulating his material and, obviously, the whole thing was seriously biased but it didn't matter to me. More than a decade later, we still hear on a regular basis such horrible stories coming from the USA and, for most of the Europeans like me, it is rather difficult to understand why they are still attached to their antic gun laws after so many lives have been lost so pointlessly. Anyway, in my opinion, this movie is at the same time entertaining, moving and educating, I think it is a great achievement and by far the best movie delivered by Michael Moore.

A boring movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 6 October 2010 06:39 (A review of Trial by Jury)

I donā€™t know if you have noticed it but I tend to really random concerning the movies I watch and, rather often, I end up watching some really obscure features like this one (I was only the 2nd listal member who has rated the damned thing). In this case, the main reason I wanted to check it out was because such fine actors like Gabriel Byrne and William Hurt were involved butĀ  even though they did a decent job, they couldn't prevent this movie from being really generic and above all rather boring. Basically, I have seen in the past too many movies with a similar plot before (the most obvious example would be ā€˜The Jurorā€™ starring Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin and, to my surprise, it was released 2 years after this movie when I thought it was in fact the other way around). On top of that, when you think about it for a few minutes, it is clearly a rather preposterous concept, to be honest and, to make things worse, this flick didn't offer anything new or original. To conclude, I think I was rather generous with my rating here, I thought the whole thing was just plain average and it is definitely not Ā worth a look.

A great classic

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 5 October 2010 12:26 (A review of 2001: A Space Odyssey)

It is probably the most highly regarded movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and you could argue about the fact this flick might be or not the best movie he has made but you can't argue the fact that this movie is the mother of all Sci-Fi movies that came afterwards. Indeed, even if you think it's slow and boring, you can't deny it has visually inspired all the Sci-Fi movies that came afterwards. Recently, I have seen 'Prometheus' which was a decent SF flick but also so disappointing in the sense that they tried to add some metaphysical elements but failed miserably. Here, Kubrick made a visually spellbinding SF feature and went metaphysical and it completely worked. I mean, the last 15 minutes are probably the most exhilarating piece of cinema I have seen in my entire life. As a viewer, it was a defining moment that I will never forget. I always find it rather amusing when the fans of 'The Matrix' argue about the great 'philosphy' behind this so-called 'masterpiece'. '2001' doesn't give you any answer, you have to look for them, you have to think the whole thing for yourself to make something of it, whereas in 'The Matrix', the meaning of life is that we are basically batteries and our brains are getting sucked out by some machine.... Give me a break! The only small critic I would have concerning this real masterpiece is that the pacing is rather sluggish but it is something marginal compared to the greatness of the whole endeavour. Anyway, to conclude, I think it is a great and very thoughtfull movie, a great landmark in motion picture history and it is a must see for any movie lover.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 5 October 2010 07:12 (A review of Closing the Ring)

Indeed, I had no idea what to expect from this movie but since it was directed by Richard Attenborough, I was quite eager to check it out (it would be in fact his last directing effort and it is rather sad that such an acclaimed director would end up his career with a direct-to-DVD feature that was barely seen by anyone). Anyway,Ā  even though it was nothing really ground-breaking,Ā  I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, this movie was well made and quite well acted but, unfortunately, the story was rather far-fetched. However, there was a rather impressive cast (Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Neve Campbell, Pete Postlethwaite, Mischa Barton) and, in my opinion, a movie directed by Richard Attenborough is always worth a look.
