My favorite Western

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 22 October 2010 11:03 (A review of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966))

Indeed, it is my favorite Western. Basically, I started to watch it as a kid with my father and I was actually planning to watch it again this time with my step-son but I ended up watching it on my own. I guess it is just too slow paced for him. Anyway, I had recently watched again ā€˜A Fistful of Dollarsā€™ and ā€˜For a Few Dollars Moreā€™ so I obviously had to round up this trilogy with this seminal classic. In my opinion, it clearly stands apart from the rest of the trilogy as the scope was much bigger this time and Sergio Leone had a rather impressive budget, at least for the time period. Indeed, there was even some room for a war scene and Leone didnā€™t really focus on Clint Eastwood like in the previous movies but he spent some good amount of time with Eli Wallach who had a great character (as a matter of fact, he even had the most screen-time) and he made a great duo with Eastwood. Maybe they could have developed a little more Lee Van Cleefā€™s character but that wasnā€™t really a big deal. Eventually, it is pretty much a childhood favorite which goes with Star Wars and Indiana Jones, it is a great classic and it is definitely a must see for any decent movie lover.

A very average movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 22 October 2010 07:03 (A review of What Happens in Vegas)

Honestly, since the whole thing looked pretty lame, I wasnā€™t expecting much from this movie but I still ended up watching the damned thing. I mean, I have nothing really against Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher but everybody knows they can be pretty annoying. So, I wonder who thought that it would a great idea to put them together in a movie. Ā Eventually, even the concept of the 2 characters getting married in Vegas was just pretty lame, the whole thing was just really predictable and, above all, rather boring to behold. Basically, Ā it all felt like a PG version of ā€˜The Hangoverā€™. I mean, I have never been a huge fan of ā€˜The Hangoverā€™ franchise, especially with these underwhelming sequels, but at least, the makers understood that if you were going to talk about people getting shitfaced in Las Vegas, then you should go all the way. Here, you get instead one of these fake raunchy comedies (some kind of specialty for Cameron Diaz if you check her career) and the end-results was indeed pretty weak. To conclude, even though I have seen worse,Ā  it was still a really average romantic comedy and it is not worth a look, even if you like the genre.Ā

A very bad movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 22 October 2010 06:54 (A review of Lower Learning)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them.Ā Honestly, before watching this, I wasn't expecting much with this flick but I didn't expect it to be so bad... Indeed, basically, they tried to provide some black humor but it was simply not funny at all and, eventually, I think it must be one of the worst school related flicks I have ever seen in my life. Some jokes were so bad, it was obvious that the makers wanted to shock the viewers but it was just really pathetic to see. The whole thing was just downright embarrassing and, clearly, this movie was a career low point for all the people involved, even for Jason Biggs. To conclude, it was pretty bad, it is definitely not worth a look and you should probably just avoid it.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 21 October 2010 02:02 (A review of City of God (2002))

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. The first time around, I was just so completely blown away and, at the time, I was convinced that it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. Well, 20 years later, I was still impressed by the damned thing and, after all these years, it is still one of the best movies I have seen. First of all, the way it was shot was really neat. Indeed, this movie was really stylized but also quite realistic at the same time which was really cool. It had some complex shots and nice visuals but it remained raw at the core at the same time. But it was not one of those movies with some nice visuals but rather tedious, no, here, the story keeps you on the edge from the beginning until the very end and it was just quite fascinating. I thought that the characters were all intriguing, even the smaller ones, and even though there were many characters, it was so well written that you could easily follow what was going on and whoā€™s who and who was doing what. How they managed to make such an entertaining and insightful movie in one of the most dangerous places on earth is quite a marvel and a mystery to me. Eventually, the only thing that still bothers me with this movie each time I watch it is some minor detail with the subtitles. Indeed, instead of calling the main character simply 'BuscapĆ©', they tried to translate this name and call him instead 'Rocket' and they did this with basically all the characters in this movie which was just so disorienting. Sure, I get that, without translating their names, you wouldn't get the signification of their nicknames but this approach was just distracting but, once again, it was just a minor flaw. Anyway, to conclude, I believe it is a great achievement, one of the best movies out there and it is pretty much a must see for any decent movie lover.

A missed oportunity

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 21 October 2010 09:15 (A review of Dan in Real Life)

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it sounded really promising so I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, it is always intriguing when a US production hires a great actress like Juliette Binoche. Eventually she was, as usual, really good here and it was very nice to see her doing something else. I was also impressed by Emily Blunt who once again stole the show in a rather small part and it is such a shame she never really managed to become a major leading actress, at least, thatā€™s my opinion. Concerning Steve Carell, I thought he was all right but he didnā€™t really impress me. Anyway, eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, they basically tried to mix comedy and drama which is something really tricky and even though, it did work for some scenes, with some other scenes, this mix was rather awkward. A couple of years before, the same director made ā€˜Pieces of Aprilā€™ and I thought it worked better. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still not bad at all is and I think it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

So bad....

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 21 October 2010 09:03 (A review of Taxi 3)

Seriously, I thought this movie was just awful. How the hell did I actually ended up watching this flick?!? Indeed, I just despised the first instalment and even though it was a massive success in France, I thought it was easily one of the most overrated movies ever produced so I should probably have avoided this sequel. The whole story is, in fact, that I was able to buy the 1st three movies on DVD and they were just 1 euro for each so I thought I might as well give this franchise a second chance. Well, the 2nd time around, I still hated the first instalment and this sequel was not really better or worse. Indeed, it was so lame... Once again, they gave us another bad story, some bad acting and some really really average action scenes...You may wonder why I watched the whole franchise if I hate it so much... Good question! Well, the point is that I'm a big fan ofĀ  Marion Cotillard and I try to see everything she is in it. By the way, she was completely under-used in all 3 movies so that was quite a waste of time. At least,Ā with this 3rd instalment, they gave us a cameo by Sylvester Stallone but, for some reasons, he was dubbedĀ in French so even this neat cameo was actually ruined. Anyway, to conclude, it was pretty bad and you should avoid this garbage.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 20 October 2010 02:16 (A review of Requiem for a Dream)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was really eager to check it out again. In fact, I actually saw the damned thing when it was released and, ever since then, Darren Aronofsky has always been one of the most intriguing directors at work. During this period, most of his movies have been critically heralded but this sophomore effort remains his best movie in my opinion. Above all, the directing was top-notch and, with this rewatch, I was surprised to discover that it was actually pretty much a psychological horror flick with a very ominous beginning and such a very relentless and hardcore ending. For all the actors involved (Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans), it wasĀ  basically the highest point of their career and they have never been better than in this flick. Hell, who would have thought that Marlon Wayans, of all people, could deliver such an impressive performance?!? Visually, it was just really impressive and, even though the video-clip esthetics might be deemed superficial, I think it was a great way to show the heightened feeling or vision of someone being under the influence of drugs. Anyway, to conclude, after all these years, I still think it is a great achievement and pretty much a must see for any decent movie lover.Ā

Study of the Dutch taxi underworld

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 20 October 2010 07:39 (A review of Nachtrit)

Ever since I have been living in the Netherlands, I have been interested in Dutch movies. However, in my opinion, it is a rather small industry, especially if you compare it to France, and most of the Dutch movies terribly usually lack any kind of ambition so most of them turn out to be rather underwhelming. Still, from time to time, they release some really interesting featuresĀ  and this movie was definitely one of them. The sad thing is that even though it was probably one of the best Dutch movies released during that particularly year, pretty much no one in the Netherlands actually saw the damned thing when it came out. Anyway, it was indeed a very realistic movie with some very good performances, especially by Frank Lammers who is definitely one of the best Dutch actors at work nowadays. Unfortunately, even though Iā€™m nowadays fluent in Dutch, I still had a hard time to follow everything said by the actors and it prevented the whole thing from getting a (probably deserved) higher rating. Anyway, to conclude, even though it might not be a real masterpiece, I really liked this movie a lot and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Dutch movies.

A touching movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 20 October 2010 07:10 (A review of The Secret Life of Words)

For some reasons, I was really eager to check this movie. I think it was mostly because Tim Robbins was involved and because the ratings were pretty good. Anyway, it had been a while since I wanted to check this flick and there is something really appealing about Isabel Coixet's work, even if she never really became a major director. Eventually, I have to admit it, I actually ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, sure, I liked it and I thought it was a rather intriguing movie. Even if it took a while before taking off but it was definitely worth the wait and Tim Robbins and Sarah Polley (2 really underrated actors) were both pretty strong and they both delivered some really good performances. I also enjoyed the directing which was just very beautiful. However, like the previous movie directed by Coixet,'My Life Without Me', I thought the whole thing was just too poetic and too elaborate. I mean, no disrespect but do you really think that most people working on a oil platform would be so articulate ? Still, in spite of is flaws, I think it was a very well made drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 19 October 2010 08:28 (A review of Death Defying Acts)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce, I thought I might as well give it a try. On top of that, I am a huge fan of movies involving magicians, illusions and such tricks. For example, 'The Prestige' is definitely one of the my all-time favorite movie. So, since this movie was dealing with Harry Houdini, arguably the best or at least the most famous illusionist that ever lived, there was definitely some potential for something really neat. Unfortunately, this flick eventually failed to really impress me. I mean, Iā€™ll give you that, the movie was well done with some nice directing and I donā€™t think that the actors should be blamed as they did what they could with this material but the story was not really captivating, Iā€™m afraid. Itā€™s just a shame that, with someone so fascinating with such a rich life, they couldnā€™t come up with a better tale than this one. Anyway, to conclude, even though it turned out to be a disappointment, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth, especially if you like the genre.Ā
