A missed oportunity

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 21 October 2010 09:15 (A review of Dan in Real Life)

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it sounded really promising so I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, it is always intriguing when a US production hires a great actress like Juliette Binoche. Eventually she was, as usual, really good here and it was very nice to see her doing something else. I was also impressed by Emily Blunt who once again stole the show in a rather small part and it is such a shame she never really managed to become a major leading actress, at least, thatā€™s my opinion. Concerning Steve Carell, I thought he was all right but he didnā€™t really impress me. Anyway, eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, they basically tried to mix comedy and drama which is something really tricky and even though, it did work for some scenes, with some other scenes, this mix was rather awkward. A couple of years before, the same director made ā€˜Pieces of Aprilā€™ and I thought it worked better. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still not bad at all is and I think it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

So bad....

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 21 October 2010 09:03 (A review of Taxi 3)

Seriously, I thought this movie was just awful. How the hell did I actually ended up watching this flick?!? Indeed, I just despised the first instalment and even though it was a massive success in France, I thought it was easily one of the most overrated movies ever produced so I should probably have avoided this sequel. The whole story is, in fact, that I was able to buy the 1st three movies on DVD and they were just 1 euro for each so I thought I might as well give this franchise a second chance. Well, the 2nd time around, I still hated the first instalment and this sequel was not really better or worse. Indeed, it was so lame... Once again, they gave us another bad story, some bad acting and some really really average action scenes...You may wonder why I watched the whole franchise if I hate it so much... Good question! Well, the point is that I'm a big fan ofĀ  Marion Cotillard and I try to see everything she is in it. By the way, she was completely under-used in all 3 movies so that was quite a waste of time. At least,Ā with this 3rd instalment, they gave us a cameo by Sylvester Stallone but, for some reasons, he was dubbedĀ in French so even this neat cameo was actually ruined. Anyway, to conclude, it was pretty bad and you should avoid this garbage.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 20 October 2010 02:16 (A review of Requiem for a Dream)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was really eager to check it out again. In fact, I actually saw the damned thing when it was released and, ever since then, Darren Aronofsky has always been one of the most intriguing directors at work. During this period, most of his movies have been critically heralded but this sophomore effort remains his best movie in my opinion. Above all, the directing was top-notch and, with this rewatch, I was surprised to discover that it was actually pretty much a psychological horror flick with a very ominous beginning and such a very relentless and hardcore ending. For all the actors involved (Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Marlon Wayans), it wasĀ  basically the highest point of their career and they have never been better than in this flick. Hell, who would have thought that Marlon Wayans, of all people, could deliver such an impressive performance?!? Visually, it was just really impressive and, even though the video-clip esthetics might be deemed superficial, I think it was a great way to show the heightened feeling or vision of someone being under the influence of drugs. Anyway, to conclude, after all these years, I still think it is a great achievement and pretty much a must see for any decent movie lover.Ā

Study of the Dutch taxi underworld

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 20 October 2010 07:39 (A review of Nachtrit)

Ever since I have been living in the Netherlands, I have been interested in Dutch movies. However, in my opinion, it is a rather small industry, especially if you compare it to France, and most of the Dutch movies terribly usually lack any kind of ambition so most of them turn out to be rather underwhelming. Still, from time to time, they release some really interesting featuresĀ  and this movie was definitely one of them. The sad thing is that even though it was probably one of the best Dutch movies released during that particularly year, pretty much no one in the Netherlands actually saw the damned thing when it came out. Anyway, it was indeed a very realistic movie with some very good performances, especially by Frank Lammers who is definitely one of the best Dutch actors at work nowadays. Unfortunately, even though Iā€™m nowadays fluent in Dutch, I still had a hard time to follow everything said by the actors and it prevented the whole thing from getting a (probably deserved) higher rating. Anyway, to conclude, even though it might not be a real masterpiece, I really liked this movie a lot and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Dutch movies.

A touching movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 20 October 2010 07:10 (A review of The Secret Life of Words)

For some reasons, I was really eager to check this movie. I think it was mostly because Tim Robbins was involved and because the ratings were pretty good. Anyway, it had been a while since I wanted to check this flick and there is something really appealing about Isabel Coixet's work, even if she never really became a major director. Eventually, I have to admit it, I actually ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, sure, I liked it and I thought it was a rather intriguing movie. Even if it took a while before taking off but it was definitely worth the wait and Tim Robbins and Sarah Polley (2 really underrated actors) were both pretty strong and they both delivered some really good performances. I also enjoyed the directing which was just very beautiful. However, like the previous movie directed by Coixet,'My Life Without Me', I thought the whole thing was just too poetic and too elaborate. I mean, no disrespect but do you really think that most people working on a oil platform would be so articulate ? Still, in spite of is flaws, I think it was a very well made drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 19 October 2010 08:28 (A review of Death Defying Acts)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce, I thought I might as well give it a try. On top of that, I am a huge fan of movies involving magicians, illusions and such tricks. For example, 'The Prestige' is definitely one of the my all-time favorite movie. So, since this movie was dealing with Harry Houdini, arguably the best or at least the most famous illusionist that ever lived, there was definitely some potential for something really neat. Unfortunately, this flick eventually failed to really impress me. I mean, Iā€™ll give you that, the movie was well done with some nice directing and I donā€™t think that the actors should be blamed as they did what they could with this material but the story was not really captivating, Iā€™m afraid. Itā€™s just a shame that, with someone so fascinating with such a rich life, they couldnā€™t come up with a better tale than this one. Anyway, to conclude, even though it turned out to be a disappointment, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A hilarious movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 19 October 2010 08:26 (A review of Religulous)

There was a time when, for my job, I was working on a late shift and since there was virtually nothing to do, I would watch movies. For this purpose, I would buy a whole bunch of very cheap DVDs to watch during this late shift. Eventually, I watched an incredible amount of garbage but there were a few exceptions and this movie was definitely one of them. Indeed, I really enjoyed this flick and I thought it was really hilarious. Seriously, it had been a while since I have laughed so much when watching a movie. On the other hand, I have to admit it, even if Bill Maher made some good points and displayed some solid arguments, the movie was definitely very manipulative, sometimes arrogant and even really mean with the people interviewed. Fortunately, I don't believe in God but I completely understand that believers would be offended by this movie. Furthermore, in the second half, Bill Maher starts to discuss other religions and, even though I understand what they were aiming for ('all religions are pretty much messed up'), it was really uneven and rather misguided. Indeed, what was great about the first half is that Bill Maher was raised as a Christian and, like me, spent all his life in this culture drenched in Christianity. Therefore, when Maher talks about the Bible or Jesus Christ with some religious fanatics, he knows more or less what he is talking about and makes the whole thing really sharp and insightful. However, when the movie starts to deal with Judaism or Islam, he obviously has no idea about what he is dealing with so the end-result was rather cringe-inducing. But still, what a funny movie... Indeed, in spite of its flaws, I thought the whole thing was really interesting and quite hilarious and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A nice little movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 18 October 2010 04:20 (A review of Marty)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it won the Best picture Academy award back in 1955, I was quite eager to check it out. After watching the damned thing, the first thing I thought was how interestingĀ it was that such a small and low key feature would actually win the Best picture Academy award. Indeed, do you think it would have a chance against our contemporary epics with a huge budget such as ā€˜Gladiatorā€™, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, ā€˜Dance with the Wolvesā€™, or ā€˜Titanicā€™? Even if Ā some smaller productions did win the big prize recently like ā€˜Spotlightā€™, ā€˜Birdmanā€™ or ā€™12 Years a Slaveā€™, they were still much more ambitious than this movie. Eventually, the fact it was so small was definitely part of its charm and why it was fairly successful commercially and critically when it was released. For Ernest Borgnine, a character actor throughout all his lengthy career, it was definitely a all-time high and he even won the Academy award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance. Anyway, I thought it was charming movie, with a a really solid Ernest Borgnine and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A very good movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 17 October 2010 10:14 (A review of The Mist)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I have it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, even though Frank Darabont has directed arguably the best movie ever made, he didn't have much success afterwards. Indeed, since then he has directed only 3 movies and only 'The Green Mile' has been successful. His 4th and final feature so far was yet another Stephen King adaptation and even though it was barely seen, it is actually one of his best movies in my opinion. Basically, it is a standard horror flick which masterfully plays with the old rule saying that invincible threats are the scariest ones. So, I thought it was really well directed and Thomas Jane gave probably his best performance so far. The best aspect in his feature was probably how it depicts the various reactions of the inhabitantsĀ in this dramatic situation. There was also a lot of talk about the ending but I'm not sure if it was really convincing. On one hand, it was indeed quite powerful and heartbreaking but, on the other hand, I thought it was way too theatrical and actually rather awkward. Indeed, just 5 minutes after everyone in the car has been shot, you get to see the tanks showing up. I mean, it would have worked better if the main character would have been walking around for hours and then see the tanks. But that was the whole point:Ā to make him kill everyone just 5 minutes before they're saved. Sure, it was strong but unnecessarily cruel, in my opinion. To conclude, even though it is not one of Darabont's most highly regarded work, I still think it is one of his best movies and it is definitely worth a look.

A nice little movie

Posted : 14 years, 2 months ago on 17 October 2010 10:12 (A review of Despicable Me)

After hearing loads of good things about this movie, I became really curious about it and I went to see it in the movie theater with Nick, my step-son. Honestly, I thought it was a nice little movie with some funny moments but not much more than that, I'm afraid. Indeed, personally, I think it is overrated since there is nothing really exceptional about it but it remains a good flick though. However, the 3D was completely useless, just avoid it. Still, I have to admit it, the animation was really good, the minions were really hilarious (in my opinion, they could drop Gru, Vector and the little girls, focus on those little guys and you would have a much better movie) and it was pretty neat that they focused on a bad guy for once. Unfortunately, Gru was not really a bad guy, he was just a loser who tried to be mean. At least, he was quite funny, just as Vector, another loser trying to be a super bad guy. Eventually, the makers tried to make the whole thing a little too family friendly for my taste and it would have been much better if the tone would have been a little darker. Still, the minions were hilarious, Gru and Vector were quite funny as well and the whole thing was definitely entertaining. To conclude, even though I think it is rather overrated, it is and remains a fun animated feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are looking for something to see with your kids.
