A nice little movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 25 October 2010 02:43 (A review of Slap Shot )

Since this movie had a decent reputation and since I always had a weak spot for Paul Newman, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, even though it was nothing really amazing, it was still a nice little movie. Indeed, in my opinion, it was nothing really spectacular but I have to admit it it was still pretty entertaining. I have noticed something rather funny with this movie is that it is apparently really popular among hockey players and fans of this sport which was rather odd in my opinion. Indeed, I don't really get it because, if you think about it for maybe a minute, there was in fact not one single proper hockey action in the whole movie, if I recall it correctly. Basically, the whole movie was about cheating and hustling (not to my dislike, in the contrary). They even won the damned cup without actually scoring or even playing !!! To put it simply, it is the most anti-sport movie I have ever seen and it is revered by sport fans all over the world... Go figure... Anyway, in spite of all this, it is definitely an original sport feature, I liked it and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A nice little movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 25 October 2010 02:36 (A review of Breakfast on Pluto)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this movie but since I always had a weak spot for Neil Jordan’s work, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, even though it was not bad at all, I still ended up with some mixed feelings about the damned thing. Indeed, even though the main character was quite fascinating thanks to an impressive Cillian Murphy, pretty much everything else in the movie didn’t work very well, I’m afraid. The main issue, in my opinion, is that there were just too many story lines that ended up being rather under-developed but I still liked the damned thing. What impressed me the most eventually was the great performance provided by Cillian Murphy. Seriously, back in those days, he was definitely one of the most talented actors at work. It’s a shame than he never really managed to confirm his tremendous potential during the following years. Anyway, in this movie, he was completely believable here and he carried the whole thing on his shoulders. To conclude, even though it was maybe a not masterpiece, I thought it was a decent drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Neil Jordan’s work.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 25 October 2010 02:33 (A review of The Alphabet Killer)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. To be honest, it really seemed to be a Ā really cheap-ass serial killer and I thought it will be really awful but, eventually, I have to admit it, it was actually not that bad at all. Indeed, above all, I really liked the concept of this cop working so hard on a case, that she first gets obsessed and then mentally really f*cked up. Even if Eliza Dushku has never been a really strong actress, I really liked how her character evolved through this movie. Unfortunately, like any average thriller, they had to end up with a twist ending, I won't spoil it but those last 10 minutes were just really bad. To conclude, the whole thing was still pretty damned average but I think it's too bad because it actually had some potential.

An interesting movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 24 October 2010 08:39 (A review of Dear Wendy)

Since this movie is rather obscure, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since I'm a huge fan of Thomas Vinterberg, I was really curious to check it out. Following ā€˜Festen’, his great masterpiece, Vinterberg spent afterwards 5 long years and no less than $10 millionsĀ on ā€˜It’s All About Love’, a movie which turned out to be a huge flop and was completely destroyed by the critics. Well, this time, it took him only a year to come up with something new and even though this follow-up was not as good as 'Festen' and even though it once again received some mixed reviews, I thought it was still pretty interesting. Indeed, not only was it directed by Thomas Vinterberg, it was also written by Lars von Trier and, together, they made a rather weird movie about weapons in the USA. Unfortunately,Ā  the movie didn't really give any conclusion or clear view on the subject and, as a a result, it was a little bit too cryptic for me and it made the whole thing rather frustrating to behold. Still, even though it didn’t really win me over, there was still something quite mesmerizing about this movie and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Thomas Vinterberg’s work.Ā Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 24 October 2010 08:13 (A review of Boo, Zino & the Snurks)

Even though this movie is pretty obscure (I was only the 4th listal member who has rated the damned thing), for some reason, I thought it seemed pretty neat so I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, the whole thing turned out to be really underwhelming, I’m afraid. It’s too bad because the concept of the story was actually quite interesting and it definitely had some potential. Indeed, you started in our world and, somehow, ended up in this fantasy world which was pretty neat but this whole idea was really poorly developed. On top of that, the animation was really mixed as the whole thing was some times decent to look at but, for some other scenes, it just looked really average, especially when the characters were in motion. Eventually, the biggest problem with this movie was the fact that I was just really bored during the whole duration. To conclude, it was another interesting attempt to make a CGI animated in Europe (this movie was the first German CGI animated feature) but the end-result was just terribly disappointing and I don’t think it is really worth a look, even if you have a weak spot for the genre.Ā

My favorite Western

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 22 October 2010 11:03 (A review of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly)

Indeed, it is my favorite Western. Basically, I started to watch it as a kid with my father and I was actually planning to watch it again this time with my step-son but I ended up watching it on my own. I guess it is just too slow paced for him. Anyway, I had recently watched again ā€˜A Fistful of Dollars’ and ā€˜For a Few Dollars More’ so I obviously had to round up this trilogy with this seminal classic. In my opinion, it clearly stands apart from the rest of the trilogy as the scope was much bigger this time and Sergio Leone had a rather impressive budget, at least for the time period. Indeed, there was even some room for a war scene and Leone didn’t really focus on Clint Eastwood like in the previous movies but he spent some good amount of time with Eli Wallach who had a great character (as a matter of fact, he even had the most screen-time) and he made a great duo with Eastwood. Maybe they could have developed a little more Lee Van Cleef’s character but that wasn’t really a big deal. Eventually, it is pretty much a childhood favorite which goes with Star Wars and Indiana Jones, it is a great classic and it is definitely a must see for any decent movie lover.

A very average movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 22 October 2010 07:03 (A review of What Happens in Vegas)

Honestly, since the whole thing looked pretty lame, I wasn’t expecting much from this movie but I still ended up watching the damned thing. I mean, I have nothing really against Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher but everybody knows they can be pretty annoying. So, I wonder who thought that it would a great idea to put them together in a movie. Ā Eventually, even the concept of the 2 characters getting married in Vegas was just pretty lame, the whole thing was just really predictable and, above all, rather boring to behold. Basically, Ā it all felt like a PG version of ā€˜The Hangover’. I mean, I have never been a huge fan of ā€˜The Hangover’ franchise, especially with these underwhelming sequels, but at least, the makers understood that if you were going to talk about people getting shitfaced in Las Vegas, then you should go all the way. Here, you get instead one of these fake raunchy comedies (some kind of specialty for Cameron Diaz if you check her career) and the end-results was indeed pretty weak. To conclude, even though I have seen worse,Ā  it was still a really average romantic comedy and it is not worth a look, even if you like the genre.Ā

A very bad movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 22 October 2010 06:54 (A review of Lower Learning)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them.Ā Honestly, before watching this, I wasn't expecting much with this flick but I didn't expect it to be so bad... Indeed, basically, they tried to provide some black humor but it was simply not funny at all and, eventually, I think it must be one of the worst school related flicks I have ever seen in my life. Some jokes were so bad, it was obvious that the makers wanted to shock the viewers but it was just really pathetic to see. The whole thing was just downright embarrassing and, clearly, this movie was a career low point for all the people involved, even for Jason Biggs. To conclude, it was pretty bad, it is definitely not worth a look and you should probably just avoid it.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 21 October 2010 02:02 (A review of City of God)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. The first time around, I was just so completely blown away and, at the time, I was convinced that it was one of the best movies I have ever seen. Well, 20 years later, I was still impressed by the damned thing and, after all these years, it is still one of the best movies I have seen. First of all, the way it was shot was really neat. Indeed, this movie was really stylized but also quite realistic at the same time which was really cool. It had some complex shots and nice visuals but it remained raw at the core at the same time. But it was not one of those movies with some nice visuals but rather tedious, no, here, the story keeps you on the edge from the beginning until the very end and it was just quite fascinating. I thought that the characters were all intriguing, even the smaller ones, and even though there were many characters, it was so well written that you could easily follow what was going on and who’s who and who was doing what. How they managed to make such an entertaining and insightful movie in one of the most dangerous places on earth is quite a marvel and a mystery to me. Eventually, the only thing that still bothers me with this movie each time I watch it is some minor detail with the subtitles. Indeed, instead of calling the main character simply 'BuscapĆ©', they tried to translate this name and call him instead 'Rocket' and they did this with basically all the characters in this movie which was just so disorienting. Sure, I get that, without translating their names, you wouldn't get the signification of their nicknames but this approach was just distracting but, once again, it was just a minor flaw. Anyway, to conclude, I believe it is a great achievement, one of the best movies out there and it is pretty much a must see for any decent movie lover.

A missed oportunity

Posted : 14 years, 8 months ago on 21 October 2010 09:15 (A review of Dan in Real Life)

When I first heard about this movie, I thought it sounded really promising so I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, it is always intriguing when a US production hires a great actress like Juliette Binoche. Eventually she was, as usual, really good here and it was very nice to see her doing something else. I was also impressed by Emily Blunt who once again stole the show in a rather small part and it is such a shame she never really managed to become a major leading actress, at least, that’s my opinion. Concerning Steve Carell, I thought he was all right but he didn’t really impress me. Anyway, eventually, it turned out to be a decent watch but not much more than that, I’m afraid. Indeed, they basically tried to mix comedy and drama which is something really tricky and even though, it did work for some scenes, with some other scenes, this mix was rather awkward. A couple of years before, the same director made ā€˜Pieces of April’ and I thought it worked better. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still not bad at all is and I think it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā
