A classic

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 1 September 2010 06:53 (A review of The Red Shoes)

A few years back, I kept coming across those two names, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, and they were always referred as some of the best movie directors ever (Martin Scorsese, for example, is a huge fan) and, supposedly, the movies they made together represented the Golden Age of British cinema. After hearing all these, I started to watch all the movies they made together and, by now, I have seen 4 of those ('Black Narcissus', 'I Know Where I'm Going!', 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp'). This movie was the first one I saw and, so far, it is easily my favorite one. I mean, I'm not really into ballet but the movie was just gorgeous to see with some flawless directing and it was also very interesting to see how a ballet in general works. The story was also rather fascinating and they seamlessly combined a realistic approach to ballet with some fantasy scenes (which reminded me of 'Black Swan'). Like I said before, I'm not really into ballet so I wasn't exactly blown away by the whole thing but it was still very enjoyable. To conclude, it is and remains a great classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A weird movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 31 August 2010 06:01 (A review of The Chaos Experiment)

To be honest, I wasn't really expecting much from this flick but since I still have a weak spot for Val Kilmer, I thought I might as well give it a try. Indeed, Val Kilmer used to be a rather interesting actor and I still think he had some potential but nowadays, he is mostly involved in some garbage and this movie is a perfect example. Indeed, Kilmer was the main reason why I would even think about watching something like this and, eventually, even if it wasn't some total garbage, it was not far from it, I'm afraid. Indeed, there were in fact a few good ideas here and there but, at the end of the day, the directing and acting were just so weak, it was just very painful to watch. At least, the idea of locking some people up in a steam room for hours and see how they melt down (physically and psychologically) was intriguing but it was just poorly developed, I'm afraid. Anyway, to conclude, I think I'm being really generous with my rating here, it is just some basic direct-to-DVD stuff and the whole thing is not really worth a look, even if you have a weak spot for Val Kilmer like I do.

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 30 August 2010 01:10 (A review of Seraphim Falls )

To be honest, it is a rather obscure feature so I wasn't really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since it was starring Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson, I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, first of all, I thought it was just really neat to see Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan working together. Concerning Pierce Brosnan, I always had a weak spot for this actor and pretty much like another James Bond actor, Daniel Craig, I have the feeling that the guy tends to be underrated but if you give him such interesting material like this one, he will clearly displays some interesting acting chops. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I really enjoyed the beginning and I must admit that I was pretty entertained by the whole thing but then, towards the end, the story started to really drag and I kind of lost interest in this story eventually. Basically, it is all about the hunting of this man and it slowly became more redundant than actually engrossing after a while. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing after all, it was still a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 30 August 2010 01:09 (A review of Amarcord (1973))

Since it is a big classic directed by Fellini, I was really curious to check this one out. The first thing to notice is that there was no plot whatsoever, it was more a typical Fellini flick with some quirky characters and situations. It has been reported that it was based more or less on Fellini's youth and, even though I thought it was interesting and intriguing, I can't say it was really mind-blowing. It is like all those characters portrayed in this flick, there were all pretty colorful but I can't say I really cared about any of them, about what they were going through or what they were thinking. I guess, it is definitely an aquired taste. Personally, I liked it but I can't say it was great. Still, Fellini was a great director and, without a story, through his mesmerizing directing, I couldn't help watching what was on my screen and he managed all by himself to make the whole thing still spellbinding to watch. To conclude, it is supposed to be a masterpiece but I wasn't really blown away. Still, it remains an interesting flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Fellini's work.

A classic

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 29 August 2010 08:44 (A review of To Kill a Mockingbird)

Since it is such a massive classic, I was really eager to check it out and I had some really high expectations towards the damned thing. Eventually, the more I think about it, the more I come to believe that this movie might be actually rather overrated, even by myself. I mean, it is indeed a huge classic and I really liked it but there were definitely some elements that did bother me. The first thing was probably the fact that Roger Ebert surprisingly didn't like it and, in his review, he developed some really solid arguments about what went wrong with this movie. Furthermore, I thought it did take a very long time to take off. Also, you always hear that Atticus Finch is a great character, brilliantly played by Gregory Peck. It is true but actually the movie didn't focus on him but on his children and I wasn't thrilled by this choice. To conclude, I should definitely rewatch it at some point to make up my mind about the damned thing but, for the time being, it remains a very good movie, a great classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A classic

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 28 August 2010 06:58 (A review of The Magnificent Seven)

Since this movie is quite a classic, obviously, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for Yul Brynner and even more for Steve McQueen. James Coburn and Charles Bronson were also some fine actors so with such a cast, I really had to see this flick at some point. Eventually, it was pretty good but I still think the original directed by Akira Kurosawa (the amazing 'Seven samurai') was actually better. It didn’t help that I saw 'Seven samurai' before so the whole thing didn’t feel really ‘fresh’. Still, it was definitely entertaining and it was above all rather fun to see Steve McQueen, originally just a supporting part, trying to upstage Yul Brynner who was at the time a bigger star. Anyway, in 2016, Antoine Fuqua  would come back with a remake and even though the cast sounds pretty bad-ass (Chris Pratt, Denzel Washington, Vincent D'Onofrio, Ethan Hawke, Cam Gigandet, Peter Sarsgaard), I can’t help thinking that the whole thing is rather misguided but we’ll see. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it didn’t really blow me away, it is still a classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 28 August 2010 06:57 (A review of Bordertown)

It is rather funny to read back the reviews of Roger Ebert concerning the older movies starring Jennifer Lopez such as ‘Out of Sight’, ‘The Cell’ or  even such weak features like ‘Angel Eyes’ and ‘Enough’. Indeed, in all these reviews, he really praised Lopez, even calling her ‘one of his favorite actresses’ at some point. After all these years, you kind of wonder what he actually saw in her as, even though she seemed to be rather promising for a short while, her acting career turned out to be terribly underwhelming after all. Anyway, with this in mind, to be honest, I didn't expect much before watching this flick but, I have to admit it, I was actually positively surprised by the damned thing. Above all, it was based on a very interesting and really shocking story. I have seen many weird stories before but this was really something else and the fact that it was based on some real events was even more mind-boggling. Unfortunately, even though the film itself was not bad, they didn't use the subject properly and during the last 15 minutes, it became a really stupid thriller which was just too bad. Still, in spite of its flaws, it though it was an interesting feature and it is definitely worth a look.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 28 August 2010 06:56 (A review of Lacombe, Lucien)

Since I have always been a fan of Louis Malle, of course, I was really eager to check this flick. One of Louis Malle's most heralded movies must be 'Au revoir les enfants' but even though  it is a great flick, I actually preferred this other movie he made also about WWII. Basically, it is another classic French movie but, in my opinion, it was actually much more original and quite spellbinding to behold. Indeed, like the Vietnam war for American directors, the WWII has always been an endless source of inspiration for the French directors. So, by now, I have seen my share of French movies dealing with the subject and it is very rare to see a director trying a really different approach about this material but it was definitely the case here. Indeed, instead of telling the usual story of a heroic resistance fighter, they decided this time to focus on a rather despicable young man who was pretty much anything but a hero. As a result, you  get a rather dark tale which was just quite fascinating. To conclude, I really loved this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A bad movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 28 August 2010 06:02 (A review of Highlander: The Source)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. I know, I know, this movie is pretty bad but I just have a weak spot for these Highlander movies, what can I say? This time, the whole thing just looked really cheap  and the story didn't make much sense. I mean, everyone seems to agree that the 1st sequel as being really awful but, in my opinion, none of the sequels afterwards were really much better and this final installment was definitely the lowest point in this really poorly developed franchise. I felt bad for Thekla Reuten, a lovely talented Dutch actress, who was obviously hoping for an international career but, after showing up in such garbage, she could really forget about this plan. Anyway, this movie is really the worst Highlander movie so I wouldn't recommend it and it is definitely not worth a look, even if you are a huge fan of this franchise.

One of my favorite movies

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 27 August 2010 01:24 (A review of American Beauty)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I was quite eager to check it out again. In fact, I remember it very well when I first saw this movie. Indeed, I actually had the pleasure to  see it in the movie theater when it was released and, back then, I have to admit that I was seriously blown away by the whole thing. Indeed, I thought it was such a great movie. Seriously, it is not very often that you come across a movie like this which really deserved all the praises it received. Eventually, what I enjoyed the most was the tone. Basically, even though there was a lot of bleakness in this story, it was often quite hilarious as well and the balance between bliss and despair was rather pitch perfect. The other thing I loved about this movie is that all the characters were quite fascinating to behold. The only exception was maybe the character played Annette Bening who was slightly too hysterical for my taste and I guess she could have been more developed but it was fortunately not a major issue. Concerning Sam Mendes, in my opinion, he delivered here one of the very best directing debuts which was quite awesome but it had its downside as well since, like Orson Welles with ‘Citizen Kane’, he might never be able to reach such heights in his career ever again. Unfortunately, almost 20 years later after this movie was released, Kevin Spacey would be hit by some sexual misconduct allegations which tarnished his career for good and it's such a pity that this movie's legacy will be forever tainted by Spacey's own personal downfall. Anyway, to conclude, it is still after all these years one of my favorite movies, it is a great classic and it is definitely worth a look.
