An inspiring movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 13 September 2010 10:53 (A review of Inside, I'm Dancing)

Since it is a rather obscure feature, I wasnā€™ t really sure what to expect from the damned thing but since I have weak spot for James McAvoy and Romola Garai,Ā  I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, I thought the whole thing was actually very good as it was just very well acted and well written. Finally, there was a realistic movie about people with a handicap ... Indeed, for example, I always had a hard time with 'Rain man'. I mean sure, this classic might be mostly entertaining, Iā€™ll give you that, but, in my opinion, it gives also a rather unrealistic view on someone who has to live with a handicap. Here, they didnā€™t sugarcoat the whole thing so it became pretty bleak but since the characters were quite charismatic, it was still really entertaining to watch. The weird thing about this flickĀ  is that it was the 3rd movie directed by Damien O'Donnell (after ā€˜East Is Eastā€™ and ā€˜Heartlandsā€™) and even though he delivered by far his best movie so far, he never actually directed another movie again which is too bad. Anyway, to conclude, it is sometimes funny and sometimes heartbreaking, I really liked the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 12 September 2010 08:15 (A review of The Ghost and the Darkness)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, even though it didnā€™t really get much love when it was released, I have to admit it, I thought it was actually not bad at all. I mean, sure, as it was pointed out by many people, it's a little bit like 'Jaws' but instead of sharks, you have some lions but I thought it was actually fairly entertaining. Indeed, even though the whole thing was not really original and rather predictable, it was still in fact well made and Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer both delivered some decent performances here. There is also the issue that it was supposedly based on some real events but so many elements were made up (for example, the character played by Douglas has never actually existed), that the tale did lose some of its impact. Anyway, to conclude, even though it is nothing really amazing, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An annoying movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 12 September 2010 04:19 (A review of Autumn in New York)

At some point the lovely Joan Chen decided to direct as well and this was in fact her second directing effort. On paper, it did sound great to make a romantic feature starring Richard Gere and Winona Ryder so I was quite eager to check it out but I was eventually amazed about how underwhelming the whole thing was in fact. Indeed, I thought that Richard Gere and Winona Ryder made a good combination but, to be honest, I thought that their characters were just terribly irritating. On top of that, Richard Gere was just playing pretty bad in this movie. I mean, by now, I have seen more than 30 movies starring this guy and even though he did impress me a couple of times, his acting skills are usually rather disappointing and this movie is a perfect example. A part from that, the story was not really well written either. It's a pity though because the whole thing definitely had some potential. Anyway, it turned out to be a critical and commercial flop and Joan Chen would never direct another movie after this one. To conclude, it is basically an average flick and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look.

A pretty good movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 12 September 2010 06:36 (A review of Spinning Boris)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have weak spot for this director and since there was a pretty good cast involved, I thought I might as well give it a try. Eventually, I didnā€™t even know it before watching the damned thing but, apparently, it was another seriously obscure feature and I was in fact the second listal member who actually rated it (in fact, 5 years later, still nobody else has rated it). Anyway, first of all, I just think that politics is really fascinating and I love movies dealing with this subject. With this in mind, Iā€™m really surprised that Ā this movie didnā€™t get any recognition at all because, even though it was nothing really amazing, I thought it dealt fairly with this subject and I just really enjoyed the damned thing. Basically, it all started as a comedy and slowly became a thriller and I thought that this transition, even though it was rather risky, worked actually pretty well here. To conclude, even though it is quite obscure and completely forgotten nowadays, I thought it was a very nice and entertaining movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested by this subject.

A boring movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 12 September 2010 06:27 (A review of Gloria)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Sidney Lumetā€™s work, I was quite eager to check it out. After directing such great movies like ā€˜Before the Devil Knows You're Deadā€™, ā€˜Dog Day Afternoonā€™, ā€˜Serpicoā€™ and ā€˜12 Angry Menā€™, you might wonder why the guy was never been really considered as one of the greatest masters and the reason why was probably that fact he spent half of his career making such rather dubious or even really lame pictures like this one. I mean, I think the whole thing must have had some potential. At least, since it was a remake from a movie directed by John Cassavetes, it must have been a decent story. I donā€™t know, even though there was nothing really wrong with this movie, eventually, I thought Ā it was just plain boring. I guessĀ  Sharon Stone could be blamed here. Indeed, I keep watching movies with this actress and most of them are just very average and she most of the time provides a less than convincing performance. This flick was a good example. Anyway, to conclude, I have not seen the original version but I'm pretty sure this remake was completely unnecessary and it is not worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 11 September 2010 10:32 (A review of RV)

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Robin Williams and Barry Sonnenfeld's work, I still wanted to check it out. At first, I have to admit it, it beginning was decent and I think the concept actually had some potential but then the story became more and more lame rather rapidly. After a while, the whole thing was just terrible, unfunny and rather painful to watch. Basically, it is one of those movies where Robin Williams acts rather hysterical which has never been really funny and to add some even more annoying characters was definitely not a good move. For Barry Sonnenfeld, it was his 4th disappointing movie in a row (after 'Men in Black II, 'Big Trouble' and 'Wild Wild West') and he won't release another movie for the 6 following years. Surprisingly, his following feature, 'Men in Black 3', which wasn't really promising either, turned out to be pretty good and surprisingly a success at the box-office so I guess, you should always hope for the best. To conclude, this is a really forgettable flick, a disappointing comedy, and you should avoid it, even if you are a huge Robin Williams fan.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 10 September 2010 10:44 (A review of Rashomon)

It is one of those movies I should definitely re-watch. Indeed, I saw it only once and it must have been something like 15 years ago. Still, I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was pretty young back in those days and after hearing so many good things about it, I thought I should give it a try. Of course, at first, I was a little bit worried, you know, a 60 years old movie, in black and white, in Japanese, I thought it might be boring. Oh boy, I was so wrong... I think after 10 minutes, I was completely sold. Indeed, it might be very old but at the same time I do believe it has actually a very modern structure (I mean, just check how many recent half-baked thrillers just copied the very same pattern). Personally, I'm not a huge fan of modern thrillers. I mean, some are really entertaining but I usually don't think that they are great because they always present a really preposterous plot and usually some ridiculous twist(s) at the end. This movie doesn't have this issue and basically gives a masterclass about how to properly create a thriller. This movie is so pure, interesting and devilishly entertaining. To conclude, this is my favorite Kurosawa movie, it is, in my opinion, a great achievement and a must see for any movie lover.

A great movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 10 September 2010 07:37 (A review of Dark City)

I remember, when this movie was released, there was not so much buzz about it but I still ended up watching it with my two of my buddies in the theater. To be honest, we were completely stoned when we went to watch it and the only thing I could remember was that my friends were constantly fidgeting and fighting on their chairs and I think the movie was pretty weird but I sure didn't have a clue what was going on. Anyway, a few years later, I watched it again, sober this time, and, this time around, it completely floored me. Indeed, even though 'The Crow', Alex Proyas' previous directing effort, was pretty good and had received some pretty good reviews, his follow-up feature was miles better in my opinion. Indeed, it had some great visuals and a mesmerizing story. Back then, everybody saw and talked about 'The Matrix' and most of us missed this gem. In my opinion, this movie is in fact much better than 'The Matrix' and fortunately, it has now a deserved cult following. Afterwards, Alex Proyas did get involved in some interesting projects later on in his career but, unfortunately, none of them reached the level of this movie. Anyway, to conclude, it is a great SF flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A funny little movie

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 10 September 2010 06:07 (A review of The Promotion)

Basically, there was a time when I would goĀ to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1Ā DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some ratherĀ obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. Eventually, I have to admit it, it was actually much better than I expected and I think this flick really had some potential. Indeed, first of all, the two leads were pretty good (yes, even the usually underwhelming Seann William Scott was actually not bad at all here) and the whole thing was simply quite funny. However, Ā at the end of the day, Iā€™m afraid it was Ā still missing something to become really amazing and they never really succeeded in fully exploiting this nice concept. Maybe if they took more risks but it all felt too easy after all. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was obviously not masterpiece whatsoever, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Not so bad, after all...

Posted : 14 years, 4 months ago on 9 September 2010 01:19 (A review of Basic Instinct 2)

Obviously, since it has a really lame reputation, I had some very low expectations concerning this movie but I have to admit that I was still rather curious about the damned thing so I still wanted to check it out. Eventually, even though it was indeed a massive critical and commercial flop, in fact, it turned out to be actually much better than I expected. Ā I mean, sure, it was still not a good movie at all, but the concept had some potential, I actually enjoyed the mood created and I especially liked the fact that the action took place in London this time. In fact, even though some critics praised Sharon Stone for her performances, I thought she was the one dragging down the whole thing each time she was on the screen. At the end of the day, I don't think she is a very talented actress and, except for ā€˜Casinoā€™, she hasnā€™t done anything really impressive after her breakthrough with ā€˜Basic Instinctā€™, at least, thatā€™s my opinion. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though there were even a few good ideas and the movie was not as bad as I expected, it was still pretty weak and I definitely cannot recommend it.
