A fun movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 25 November 2010 01:04 (A review of The Hangover)

Before watching this, like everybody, I heard many things about it and everyone seemed to agree that it was completely hilarious so I was quite eager to finally check the damned thing. Eventually, I finally had the chance to see it and, to be honest, I think the whole thing is actually rather overrated. I mean, sure, it was fairly entertaining but I never thought it was seriously hilarious at any moment. I have to admit it, the concept was pretty awesome and it definitely had indeed some potential for an epic R-rated comedy but I never understood why, if you have a bunch of colorful characters having a very wild night in Las Vega, why would you bother showing the day after, when all the fun is gone and the guys spend all their time to recover the damages and their senses? Seriously, at the end, you finally get to see what happened during this wild night and it seemed to be much more fun than what they actually gave us in this movie. Anyway,  in my opinion, it was nothing great after all but, I have to admit it, it was still a decent comedy and I think it is  worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 24 November 2010 08:31 (A review of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse)

To be honest, even though it might sound surprising, I thought that ‘Twilight’ was actually not bad at all. I mean, sure, obviously, it was no masterpiece, but I thought that the concept had some potential and it was in fact a decent watch, especially because I had such low expectations. However, eventually, the first sequel ‘New Moon’ turned out to be a huge disappointment and this following sequel gave me basically the same feeling. The main issue is that, instead of developing the relationship between this vampire and this average girl, the whole thing simply goes nowhere and I was just bored during the whole duration. To give Taylor Lautner’s character here a more important role was also a huge mistake and, as a result, Bella would be stuck this whole franchise in this tedious ‘threesome’. Seriously, during the whole thing, you have them arguing about what guy she should be with which was just so boring. Concerning David Slade, a once really promising director following the interesting ‘Hard Candy’ and ‘30 Days of Night’, this movie would a huge step-back in his career  as he hasn’t directed another full length feature ever since which is jut rather sad. Anyway, to conclude, I cannot possibly recommend this movie, expect if you are die hard 'Twilight' fan.

An interesting movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 23 November 2010 12:36 (A review of Enduring Love)

To be honest, since I haven't heard much about this flick before watching it, I had no idea what I should expect. As usual, I didn't watch the trailer or read what it was about beforehand and, once again, it was really a rewarding approach. Indeed, thanks to this process, I thought the intro was great and really mesmerizing. I thought it was just fascinating and I was really wondering where the story will go from there. Furthermore, way before reaching stardom with James Bond, Daniel Craig played the leading part in this movie and he was really good. By the way, I think it was a great move from the James Bond producers to pick up a really good actor to play this iconic character. Anyway, back to our main feature, I must admit that even though Rhys Ifans also did a fine job, I wasn't really interested by his character. I know, in the original book, he was actually the center of the story but I was actually more interested in Craig's guilty feelings and I wish the plot focused more on this than Ifans’s wacky character. Still, it remains a very interesting movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you wonder what Craig did before becoming James Bond.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 23 November 2010 10:05 (A review of Faithful (1996))

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. We can't say that Cher really had an amazing movie career but she did manage to snatch an Oscar. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, even though it is a rather unknown flick (I was only the 2nd listal member who has rated the damned thing), I thought I should give it a try. Eventually, the whole thing definitely had some potential but I can't say I really enjoyed it. Indeed, Palminteri and Cher were not bad and the dialogues were decent as well but the story was just too average and it was not enough developed in my opinion. Eventually, I wasn't really entertained by the whole thing and I cannot possibly recommend it. To conclude, it is a rather average flick and it is not really worth a look, expect maybe if you are a die-hard Cher fan.

A very good movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 22 November 2010 03:39 (A review of Talk to Me)

To be honest, I wonder how I actually ended up watching this movie. My guess is that I heard about what is about and since it sounded quite intriguing, I became quite eager to check it out. Eventually, I wasn’t disappointed, it is definitely one of those underrated/unknown jewels and I really loved the damned thing. I have to admit it, before watching this flick, I had actually never heard of Petey Green before and, apparently, this movie was not really accurate but, I didn’t care much, the guy was pretty cool, above all thanks to a really good performance by Don Cheadle who is definitely one of the most underrated actors at work nowadays. In this movie, Cheadle was working with Chiwetel Ejiofor, another criminally underrated actor, and they had some great chemistry together. Above all, I thought it was just a really interesting and entertaining story. Concerning Kasi Lemmons, I still have to watch her directing debut, ‘Eve’s Bayou’, which was very well received (according to Roger Ebert, it was even the best movie released in 1997, no less than that). Anyway, to conclude, even though it is a rather obscure feature, I thought it was a really good biopic and  it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 22 November 2010 01:00 (A review of We Don't Live Here Anymore)

To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a very nice cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though it was not really groundbreaking, I thought it was pretty good though. I mean, with such a cast (Mark Ruffalo, Laura Dern, Peter Krause, Naomi Watts), how can you do wrong ? It was especially pretty neat to see Peter Krause. Around that time, I was binge-watching 'Six Feet Under' with my wife and it was really nice to see this fine actor in a full length feature for once. Apparently, this movie was quite an exception as he has been mostly focusing on TV-shows lately, first with 'Dirty Sexy Money' and later on with 'Parenthood'. Anyway, all the actors involved did a fine job here and the directing was pretty solid as well. Honestly , the story was actually kind of depressing but it is never something that really bothers me. Like I mentionned before, I don't think the story was very amazing or original but the 4 actors were all so good, they made the whole thing rather fascinating to look at. To conclude, I thought it was a decent drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 21 November 2010 08:32 (A review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1)

To be honest, I have to admit it, it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, it was actually better than the 5th and the 6th movies. Indeed, the actors were good, the directing was well done and there were some (but rather few) decent action scenes. However, the story was still pretty weak, I'm afraid. Seriously, it was so confusing... It was to be expected as it is a book adaptation but it remains, in my opinion, the most confusing Harry Potter movie I have seen so far, at least, the first time I saw it. Eventually, I saw it again and, even though it did make a little bit more sense, I still think that most of the movie was simply about the 3 main characters aimlessly roaming around, looking for some artifacts without knowing where they are or what those artifacts even look like. The thing that most bothered me was the fact that they ruined one of the best aspects of this franchise. Indeed, what was really neat about those movies was to see those kids growing up, going to a magical school and solving some mysteries along the way. Well, in this supposedly last school year, they didn't go to school at all! So, we have basically spent 6 movies following their education but they eventually simply drop the whole thing entirely which made this whole journey rather pointless. The other thing that really bothered me was that, at this point, Harry, Hermione and Ron have all become some pretty skilled wizards and, as a result, every time they get stuck, they just know exactly the right spell that solves exactly the issue they have at that moment and, as result, there is nothing much at stake at any given moment. Still, I have to agree, it remains one of the better installments, the tone was pretty dark and gloomy and the whole thing was fairly entertaining. To conclude, even though I don't think it was really amazing, it remains a decent blockbuster and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you enjoyed the previous Harry Potter flicks.

A nice movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 21 November 2010 09:01 (A review of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. I have to admit it, I hoped they would manage to bring back somehow the Major since she is so emblematic to this franchise. Unfortunately, this time around, they focused on Batou who was maybe a pretty cool character but he was never as awesome as the Major was. Still, it was rather a ballsy move from the makers to pretty much get rid off of their famous character like this. Anyway, even though I really missed the Major, I still really liked this movie. Above all, the whole thing was again visually really awesome and only for this, it is worth watching this movie. However, as usual with 'Ghost in the Shell', the story was just so confusing. In fact, after rewatching it for a 2nd time, I was amazed by how little I actually remembered. In fact, even after a 2nd time around, I'm still not sure if I understood half of the movie but the whole thing was still rather fascinating. Anyway,  to conclude, it is a rather tough watch and an acquired taste but I still think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Japanese animation.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 21 November 2010 08:57 (A review of Erik the Viking)

To be honest, I have actually no idea why exactly but, for some reasons, I was really eager to watch this flick and it took me many years to finally see the damned thing. I guess, I wanted to check it out mostly because it was directed by Terry Jones, one of the guys involved in the Monty Python. The fact that Tim Robbins was playing the lead definitely made the whole thing even more interesting (by the way, what happened to this guy? I mean, seriously, when was the last time he showed up in something really amazing?). Anyway, even though this movie turned out to be a decent watch, I thought it was actually rather underwhelming after all. I mean, I really loved the concept, it was a great idea but, unfortunately, I thought it was rather poorly developed. On top of that , the directing was just not great at all and the whole thing was just rather slow. Anyway, to conclude, I didn't hate it like Roger Ebert did so I can't say it was great but I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you are a fan of the Monty Python’s work.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 3 months ago on 19 November 2010 11:52 (A review of Vacancy)

To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Kate Beckinsale, I thought I might as well give it at try. Eventually, I have to admit that I was at first actually rather positively surprised. Indeed, the beginning was not bad all and the end result was watchable but, at the end of the day, there was absolutely nothing original in this movie. I guess, the thing that annoyed me the most was how lazy the whole thing was. Seriously, after watching so many similar movies through the years,  it is just rather difficult for me to get entertained by such a generic slasher flick like this one. Indeed, they should really offer something new otherwise the whole thing is just rather pointless, in my opinion.  Concerning Kate Beckinsale , it was a typical effort for her and I’m afraid she never managed to become something else than a pretty face. As usual with this kind of flicks, they came  up eventually with a seemingly even more underwhelming sequel, as always released directly to DVD and starring no one from the original cast. To conclude, even though I have seen worse, it is a just a really average flick and I don’think it is really worth a look.
