Notes: Eventually, even though I really liked this movie, I can’t say I really loved it though. Basically, it was a rather dark and gloomy picture, with some nice directing and really strong acting but, to be honest, I didn’t like their approach of showing a harsh reality while telling you at the same time ‘Just relax, this isn’t actually reality, it is in fact some magic realism so you shouldn’t worry about the terrible fate of these characters’. I also didn’t like much the way they introduced the father who was displayed at first as a careless drunk douchebag but, by the end, it might have been actually the best father in the world after all. It was some rather cheap manipulation. Still, there was definitely something quite mesmerizing about the damned thing. Indeed, even though they obviously didn’t have much money, they created a detailled and organic world and most of the shots were very well done and beautiful to look at. And, of course, the very young Quvenzhané Wallis gave an impressive performance, she was only 5 years old when was cast and became, at 9 years old, the youngest person ever nominated for an Academy Award for the Best Actress and it will probably remain so for a long time.

Notes: This movie was just really amazing. I even shed a few tears, something that never happened to me before. First of all, after 20 years of mindless garbage, the great Robert De Niro was finally showing up in a good movie giving a great performance like in the good old days. Secondly, the characters and the whole story really touched me personally as I was reminded of how I met my wife and why we ended up together in the first place. Finally, it was just a terrific movie with some real characters, with some real issues, dealing with their emotions and making me laugh and cry. I was also impressed by Bradley Cooper. Man, this guy seems to be the real deal. Indeed, only a few years before, he got his breakthrough with 'The Hangover' as a funny guy, then he became quickly another pretty face but, now, he is profiling himself as a genuinely talented dramatic actor. Concerning Jennifer Lawrence, I was not so sure. I mean, she gave a solid performance but, in my opinion, she was actually too young for this part. Anyway, it is probably the best romantic-comedy I have ever seen and I just loved the damned thing. 
Coming back to this discussion, since then I have seen both 'Youth Without Youth' and 'Twixt' and, well, to be honest, they were both pretty weak. Indeed, 'Youth Without Youth' was watchable but terri
