Loveless
chosen by Peter Notes: After watching 'The Return' and 'Leviathan' from the same director, I was expecting again something massively dark and depressing but, to be honest, compared to this 2 previous directing efforts, this movie turned out to almost easy to swallow. Still, it was far from being a comedy, that's for sure. In fact, this time, I felt mostly anger while watching this movie. Indeed, Andrey Zvyagintsev gave us such selfish and most of the time rather despicable characters, they were possibly the worst parents I have ever seen and it was fairly easy to hate their guts. Sure, they didn't beat or sexually abused their son but the mental mistreatment was massive. My theory is that, after decades under the communist dictatorship, the Russian people suddenly had to switch to the individualistic capitalism and, apparently, this change was so abrupt that they became even more decadent than we are. Basically, the generation of my parents fought to be free and, us, their children took this freedom for granted and became the 'Me' generation, always focusing and obsessing about our needs and what is supposedly important for us. Well, if you would believe Zvyagintsev, the middle-class Russians apparently took this to the next level. In fact, this was only half of the movie and it was quite interesting to behold but, the other half was some kind of thriller investigation involving the search of the missing boy. This part, however, didn't work so well though. Indeed, the outcome was pretty obvious from the very beginning, it was pretty damned slow and eventless and the characters involved didn't evolve whatsoever so it felt rather pointless. Anyway, even if it wasn't really a home-run, it was still a solid drama. (Nov. 2017)

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Brad Pitt, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, to be honest, it wasn't really good, I'm afraid. The biggest issue, in my opinion, is that it wasn't really a great story to start with. They did try t” read more

Notes: To be honest, I have already seen this movie but it was ages ago and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Still, back then, I really loved the damned thing. Indeed, back in those days, Dustin Hoffman just got his breakthrough a couple of years before with ‘The Graduate’ and the guy was already at the top of his game. In my opinion, it was one of the very few movies which managed to take a classic genre (in this case, the Western) and gave it a nice satirical twist. Seriously, it worked on so many level as it was an ambitious epic tale spread over decades, a really funny dark comedy and also a political and social critic on the state of the USA at the time. Furthermore, it was another example that the 70’s was the golden age of the American movies showing how these guys would be creative at the time.

“Even though this movie didn't get much love when it was released, since I have a weak spot for Ken Loach's work, I was still eager to check it out. Well, first of all, I already enjoyed the directing and it was pretty neat that Loach went for a periode piece this time around. Indeed, he really manag” read more

Patton
Notes: Well, this movie definitely deserved to win the Best Picture Academy award at the time. Indeed, it is quite a fascinating war feature with a fascinating real figure in the middle. It seemed that Patton was quite a character but you can’t deny that he was a great military strategist and the masterstroke in this movie was to make a multi-layered portrait of this ultimate soldier. Obviously, George C. Scott (who also won the Academy award but refused it because he was against the idea of a competition between actors) was quite brilliant and this performance would be the one he will be forever remembered. The funny thing is that he didn’t believe that he actually did a good job and would, apparently, apologize often to the director Franklin J. Schaffner because he didn’t deliver the goods. Francis Ford Coppola, who was even younger than I am today, was also involved in this classic and would even win his first Academy award as a writer.
