A good movie

“When was the last time that Vince Vaughn scored a hit? Well, instead of wasting my time with one of his recent movies, I thought I should finally watch instead this movie for which he gave his breakthrough performance.  Well, since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I had some” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. Well, it is basically a rather cute feel-good sport feature but, not much more than that, I’m afraid. I guess it might be more interesting for the US audience who might be really fascinated” read more

The Natural
Notes: Seriously, it must be one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. I mean, it is not that the movie was actually really bad or anything but, somehow, I thought it would be way better than this. I don’t know, the whole concept of a baseball movie starring Robert Redford sounded pretty cool but the end-result was not really impressive, I’m afraid. To be honest, it had nothing to do with Mr Redford who was pretty awesome, as usual, but, apparently, I had more issues with the story itself. Indeed, the whole thing was trying to be some kind of epic and inspiring tale but I thought it was actually a really generic and pedestrian sport story and it was just terribly underwhelming and disappointing. Eventually, I was never really moved or touched by this story and I never really cared about any of the characters involved or what they what they were going through. I think it's too bad since the whole thing actually really had some potential and it could have been pretty awesome in my opinion.

The Spectacular Now
Notes: At first, it started out as a rather standard teenage romantic-comedy, very soon, it was clear that the whole thing was actually really much more than that. First of all, some people argued that it was rather unbelievable that such a girl would fall in love with such a mess but I don’t agree at all. Indeed, in spite of his drinking problem, the main character was actually a popular guy who was nice with everyone and, since she never had a boyfriend, she idealized him like we all did with our first girlfriend/boyfriend (indeed, I still think that my first girlfriend was an actual goddess). Still, to be honest, I was not so sure about the drinking. I mean, it’s not that the main character was drinking a lot, in fact, the guy was actually constantly drinking (I think he had a drink in 95% of the scenes). It was an interesting look on a very young alcoholic but I still think it was strange that not one of his friends or his sister or his mother would ever actually mention it at any moment. Anyway, I thought that both characters were fascinating thanks to some strong performances by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. Eventually, it was one of the best teenage romantic dramas I have seen, in fact, I think it might be even better than ‘The Perks of Being a Walflower'.

A very good movie

A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. My wife and I always had a weak spot for Hugh Grant but, let’s be honest, even though the guy always had some great charisma, he eventually has/had a rather disappointing career after all. A good movie

“I remember it very well the first time I saw this movie. Indeed, back then, I was living in England and I saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. At the time, it was a huge critical classic and it is still considered as the best movie directed so far by Cameron Crowe. Well, t” read more

Ghostbusters
Notes: When this movie came out, I was just a kid and, I remember, it was pretty huge. Back then, it was a real event and it was just everywhere. I mean, you had the hit song, the awesome logo, all the merchandise, there was even two different cartoon shows if I recall it correctly. Basically, it was inevitable, except maybe if you lived in a dark cave, and I really loved the whole phenomenon. I thought it was just awesome, to see those funny guys with their weird gadgets and those ghosts were still kind of spooky. Anyway, after all those years, I thought it was time to re-watch it. Filled up with all these childhood memories, I had some pretty huge expectations but, to be honest, I was rather disappointed. Indeed, I actually had a rather hard time to care about the damned thing. I mean, I still could see that the whole thing was quite original and I was fairly entertained throughout the beginning until the end but I also thought that it was actually pretty cheesy. When I was a kid, I thought the whole thing was just awesome and fascinating but, as a grown-up, I thought it was at best amusing but I never thought it was really hilarious whatsoever.

A good movie

“Since this movie was another big box-office success for Disney last year, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, the whole thing was visualy really impressive. Paris, Texas (1984)
Notes: I think I had with this flick one of the best movie experiences in my whole life. Indeed, I must have been 15-16 years old the first I watched it and it completely blew me away. Back when it was released, it was a critical success and this movie won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes film festival but nowadays it is a little bit forgotten but it's actually a real shame. Indeed, it has one of the best soundtrack ever and the story, the directing, the acting, everything was just plain amazing. Basically, it was just a really mesmerizing picture to watch. In my opinion, it is also a really poectic picture with a hypnotising slow tempo which could bother impatient viewers but it did work for me, absolutely. Since then, I have following Wim Wenders’s career and even though he has made many interesting features, no one of them really touched me like this one.

“Not to be confused with ‘A Most Wanted Man’ which was released the very same year, this movie was the 3rd directing effort delivered by J.C.
