A very good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie but I remember it very well. Indeed, it was the first movie directed by Peter Jackson that I had the pleasure to see and I really loved the damned thing. The first time I watched it, I must have been 13-14 years old and I had definitely ” read more

Down by Law
Notes: First of all, even though I did love some movies directed by Jim Jarmusch such as ‘Dead Man’, ‘Ghost Dog’ or ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’, I must admit that I actually had a hard time to care about his other movies, especially his early work from the 80’s. I mean, they were all interesting but it wasn’t just really my cup of tea. In this case, the fact that I always thought that Roberto Benigni was actually more obnoxious than really funny didn’t help either. Fortunately, John Lurie and Tom Waits were fine here and this trio was not bad after all. On top of that, Jarmusch definitely knows how to create a nice unique mood and the black and white cinematography (like his 2 previous directing efforts) was really neat. This time, Jarmusch did use a plot but he obviously didn’t care much about the rules of the jailbreak genre which was pretty nice.

A good movie

“To be honest, even though I have heard about Amy Schumer, I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with her work but since this movie was available on HBO, I thought I might as well check it out. A classic

An average movie

“To be honest, when I first heard of this movie, I thought it sounded really lame and the only reason I decided to check it out anyway was only because I had a weak spot for Keira Knightley. Arrival
chosen by Johan Notes: Right now, according to IMDb (Internet Movie Database), this is the best movie released in 2016 so you can't argue that I did not try to show the best movie possible to the film club. It's just a shame that it didn't turn out to be really amazing. I mean, I thought it was visually really neat, Amy Adams gave a solid performance and I really loved the fact that they put the focus on language and on the difficulty and importance to be able to communicate with a possible Alien life form. As a result, it was probably one of the most minimalistic Science-Fiction features I have seen but it wasn't a bad thing, in the contrary. Unfortunately, I'm familiar with this old gimmick of creating an ominous mood and keeping the audience for as long as possible in the dark but, at some point, they have to deliver an explanation and such movies very rarely manage to end up in a satisfactory manner. In this case, it was not bad but I thought that, when this first encounter should have been a worldwide historical event, its impact was reduced to one single human being. What was actually the impact on the rest of the world? In what way was this event something really life changing? Anyway, even though it didn't completely blow me away, it was still a decent SF feature. (Nov. 2016)

Aliens
Notes: To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of this flick. I mean, every time I watch it, I like it and I'm entertained throughout the whole thing but it never really blows me away. Stil, I have to admit that it is visually impressive with a great mood from the beginning until the end. Furthermore, once again, Sigourney Weaver shows that she is terribly bad-ass which is quite an achievement in the macho action genre. So, what's my problem with this fine picture? In my opinion, just like all the sequels in this franchise, it is actually just a remake of the masterpiece made by Ridley Scott. Sure, they gave it a new look, some impressive action pieces and it felt more like an action flick this time but, at the end, it basically followed pretty much the same plot. Furthermore, except for Ellen Ripley, all the characters were terribly stereotypical and barely interesting which got on my nerves after a while. Still, it is a good flick, no doubt about it.

Easy Money
Original Title: 'Snabba Cash' Country: Sweden Directed by: Daniel Espinosa With: Joel Kinnaman Plot: When JW becomes a drug runner in order to maintain his double life, his fate becomes tied to two other men: Jorge, a fugitive on the run from both the Serbian mafia and the police, and mafia enforcer Mrado, who is on the hunt for Jorge. Note: Even though it was maybe nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was still a solid gritty crime thriller. Above all, it was really neat to a much younger Joel Kinnaman and, for the first time, speaking in his mother tongue. Seriously, this guy is just so charismatic and he was once again quite spellbinding to behold here. Concerning the story itself, it was quite entertaining and it gave a realistic view on the criminal underworld in Stockholm, involving the Yugoslavian mafia and also some Chileans. Eventually, the only thing really preventing this movie to become really amazing was probably the fact that there were slightly too many characters and sub-plots to deal with.

Ferris Bueller
Notes: Even though I enjoyed most of it and thought it was indeed pretty good, I still can't say I was blown away by the whole thing though. I mean, it was nice and entertaining, I was smiling from time to time but there was nothing really hilarious or fascinating about the whole thing whatsoever in my opinion. Furthermore, Ferris Bueller is apparently supposed to be this amazingly cool high-school dude but I thought he was just some average teenager who actually tends to be rather obnoxious and not really awesome or inspiring. In my opinion, to be honest, I think the whole thing is actually rather dated and its status of great classic is vastly overblown. One funny thing is that even though Matthew Broderick got his breakthrough by playing the coolest guy around the block, he would spend most of the rest of his career portraying some emotionally challenged and rather constipated characters. Still, even though I don’t think it was really that amazing , I have to admit it, it remains a well made and entertaining teen comedy.
