A good movie

“Basically, that’s another really obscure French movie. In fact, it is so obscure that, even 6 years later, I’m still the only Listal member who has rated the damned thing. Well, to be honest, I really wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing at the time. Anyway, it is basically o” read more

Notes: First of all, I have to admit that I have a somewhat difficult relationship with David Lynch. I mean, by now, I have seen all his movies and even though I admire his work and considered him a genuine artist, I usually have a hard time to enjoy most of his features and this movie was a perfect example. Indeed, as usual with Lynch, the beginning was a spellbinding and thrilling film noir which would have made Hitchcock proud. But then, again as usual with this director, he obviously didn't care about the plot, he seamelessly threw it out the window and what remained was a succession of weird and unsettling scenes. In my opinion, it is a pattern used too often by David Lynch and I always find it eventually more frustrating than rewarding. Still, the directing was really neat and there was a fine cast involved, above all Dennis Hopper was really impressive and probably gave here his best performance ever. Eventually, even though it is an acquired taste, there are still plenty things to love here.

A good movie

“Before this movie was released, there was a very good buzz about it and many thought that Steve Carell had a shot at winning the Academy Award for for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role but, eventually, when it was released, it didn’t turn out to be such a huge critical success aft” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a years since I have seen this movie and I should really re-watch it at some point. Well, in Oliver Stone’s filmography, this movie definitely has a solid reputation but, even though I really loved 'Platoon', I didn't think his 2nd Vietnam feature was really so amazing. Notes: For some reasons, even though I have been following Woody Allen’s work for several decades now, I have never been a huge fan of this movie. I mean, the first time I saw it, I was much younger and maybe I wasn’t able to really appreciate it but, eventually, after all these years, I have to admit that there is no doubt that it was actually better than anything Allen has done during the last 20 years. Anyway, when it was released, it was definitely a big success and, with a box office gross of over $40 million, it was Woody Allen's most financially successful film until ‘Match Point’ was released almost 20 years later. I don’t know, in my case, even though there was a stellar cast involved (Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Carrie Fisher, Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, Max von Sydow, Woody Allen) and the story itself was fairly entertaining, it never really reached the level of such Allen’s classics like ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Annie Hall’.

Unbroken
It was actually directed by Angelina Jolie, the Coen brothers wrote the screenplay. Before this movie was released, there was a really good buzz about the damned thing and many expected it to be a front-runner for the Best Picture Academy award and, as a result, launching for good the directing career of Angelina Jolie. Eventually, when it came out, it didn't turn out to be such a huge critical success after all and it vanished rather quickly. In fact, it is pretty easy to understand why. I mean, Jolie went for a project which seemed to be some pure gold. Indeed, she was working with acclaimed DOP Roger Deakins, the screenplay was written by the Coen brothers and, above all, it was simply an amazing story. Unfortunately, even though this true tale was quite incredible, it turned out to be a decent watch but it certainly didn't result in a great movie, I'm afraid. The main issue, I guess, was that even though Jolie made sure she didn't mess it up, she also never managed to go beyond simply telling the life story of Louis Zamperini. Indeed, there was really not much depth and, in this case, since we all knew how it would end, there was a desperate need to tell more than just the facts.

The Escape
[youtube id=jzUFCQ-P1Zg] Note: After the disappearance of geneticist Dr. Nora Phillips and the exposure of the Molecular Genetics company's illegal activities in human cloning, the FBI carries out a raid on the facility in order to arrest and take custody of its key people. One surviving specimen, Lily, is escorted by a ruthless mercenary and gunman named Holt to be delivered to an unnamed customer who bought the specimen. The Driver is hired to transport the package to the rightful location with Holt "babysitting" him, ordering the hired driver to evade the FBI forces. En route to delivering Lily, the Driver develops a strong dislike for Holt's violent and inhuman treatment of Lily as an object rather than a human being. He kicks the mercenary out of the car by subduing him and holding him at gunpoint. Holt pursues the Driver and tries to stop the car with a sniper rifle via helicopter, but the Driver incapacitates Holt's comrades and leaves him in the middle of the road to be arrested by the FBI, after a long and intense chase. Eventually, the Driver delivers Lily to the extraction point where she informs him that Dr. Phillips created her along with three others, who are now gone. She's surprised to learn that Dr. Phillips is the actual customer who takes maternal custody of Lily and leaves the soil with her at the docks. A good movie

An average movie

“More than 10 years ago, John McTiernan released this movie which would be, so far, his last directing effort. Indeed, in the following years, he had some major issue with the Justice system since roughly 2007 and in 2013, he was sentenced to federal prison to serve a one-year term for lying to FBI a” read more

She's Gotta Have It (1986)
Notes: What I liked the most was the fact it was so much lighter than Spike Lee's usual work which was just so refreshing. Then, even though it was sometimes slightly pretentious, which was rather expected from a directing debut, I really liked the directing with some neat black-and-white photography. Still, even though Tracy Camilla Johns was quite gorgeous and seriously charismatic, it was still difficult to root for this character with some massive commitment issues. Indeed, it is interesting to point that, so far in his career, Spike Lee has made only 2 movies with a female main character, this one dealing with a woman who sleeps pretty much with everybody and 'Girl 6' who was dealing with a woman becoming a phone-sex operator. Still, even if the material didn't completely work, it was pretty neat how Spike Lee managed to deliver some rather complex and flawed characters.
