An average movie

“I thought I already saw this movie but I actually got it confused with ‘Sabotage’, another thriller that Alfred Hitchcock did direct 6 years before this movie. Well, basically, it is one of his typical thrillers involving an average guy wrongfully accused of some crime and that was probably the ” read more

An average movie

“I actually already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. After struggling through most of the 80's and the 90's, Ridley Scott would finally make a major come-back in 2000 with 'Gladiator' but, before that, he would relea” read more

A good movie

“I actually already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again.  When it was released, it was a little bit controversial since they took a classic Shakesperean play but set it in our modern time with a very flashy directing st” read more

A classic

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. It is considered by many as Terry Gilliam's Magnum Opus and even though it might not be my favorite movie he made (I think I actually prefer ‘12 Monkeys’), it is still pretty obvious” read more

The Fly
Notes: Up to that point, David Cronenberg had been involved with some rather gruesome horror features for a limited audience and it was his first mainstream project, if I recall correctly. The most startling aspect with this movie, in my opinion, is that it seamlessly combines 3 different genres: horror, science-fiction and romance. And it does it surprisingly well. Obviously, it still retained its B vibe that you can find in Cronenberg's previous work which was definitely an asset but it was also why I wasn't probably completely blown away. I mean, I did really enjoy the whole thing but most of it still remains a huge preposterous freak show. Still, you have to give the guy some credit since he managed to make something quite fascinating out of this material whereas another director would have probably ended up with something much more underwhelming.

An average movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. To be honest, I never really understood why this movie was so popular. I mean, at some point, according to IMDb, this was even the best movie released in 2016 (not anymore though). I have to” read more

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was ages ago, I was quite eager to check it out again at some point. I have to admit it, the first time I saw it, even though this movie had a really solid reputation, I didn't care  much for the damned thing and, back then, I ended up with some really mixed fe” read more

Top Gun (1986)
Notes: To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of this movie. I know, it is a huge classic from the 80's but I just didn't really like it much. I'm maybe too harsh but, honestly, if you put aside all the impressive flying scenes, what else do you have? In my opinion, you have actually a rather weak and predictable plot with some poorly developed characters. I mean, sure, Tom Cruise, in his breakthrough performance, was really charismatic but it was hardly his best work and I can’t say I was really convinced by his relationship with Kelly McGillis. Honestly, the whole thing was pretty much just a recruiting commercial for the Air Force, not much more than that, I'm afraid. Eventually, even though it was watchable and somewhat entertaining, I don’t think it is actually really good, I would go as far as saying that it is actually pretty damned average.

A classic

“Since this movie had a really solid reputation, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, to be honest, I have to admit that I always had a hard time with the screwball comedies and, even though this movie is probably one of the most famous in this genre, I still had a hard time to really car” read more

“To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. “I already saw this movie but since it was such a long ago, I was really eager to check it out again. Well, even after all these years, it is still a really awesome flick. Sure, it might not be Tim Burton's best directing effort but it is definitely his most fun movie to watch. Above all, his biggest” read more

Stand by Me
Notes: It is easily the best movie dealing with children that I have ever seen. It is widely known that to make a movie with children is one of the most difficult things for multiple reasons and most of the features dealing with this subject are either phony or terribly condescending. Not this flick though. Indeed, for once, Stephen King dropped his horror shenanigans and instead wrote a simple but really efficient and completely heartfelt youth story and Rob Reiner created one of the best adaptations of a King book. Of course, I shouldn't forget to mention the terrific cast, especially those 4 kids were just downright amazing, giving some of the best children performances you'll ever see. The whole melancholy and sadness generated by this movie was even more grabbing when you think that the great River Phoenix would die only 7 years later.

Troll Hunter
Original Title: 'Trolljegeren' Country: Norway Directed by: André Øvredal Plot: A group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter. Note: By now, you might think that the found-footage gimmick has been done to death but, apparently, the film makers still manage to find some way to be creative with this concept. Indeed, in this case, we get the opportunity to go all the way to Norway to follow some kind of troll hunter during the shooting of a mockumentary. Eventually, the end result was not bad and, above all, I liked the way they managed to mix comedy and horror which can be a tricky thing to do.
