Things to Come
chosen by Ietje Notes: For the 2nd time around this year, we went to see another movie starring Isabelle Huppert who is slowly becoming one of our favorite actresses. Concerning the movie itself, it was basically about a very rational woman who had to face some really emotional events (the loss of her job, the death of her mother and the separation with her husband). However, even if this process was quite interesting, thanks above all to a really solid performance from Huppert, I never really felt swept away by the whole thing. It probably had to do with the fact that, as a French boy, I more or less grew up in such an environment which might seem incredibly enlightning but, from my own experience, this way of life can also be eventually rather cold and frustrating. It is also a way that you might describe this movie. On one hand, this woman discovers herself again, finding some new challenges and pleasures but, on the other hand, she remains also the same woman, with the very same qualities and shortcomings. “I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out again. Back then when it was released, even if it did turn out to be fairly successful at the box-office, this movie still got a rather lame reputation. Even myself, I had some mixed feelings about the dam” read more

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
Notes: As a kid, I kind of missed on the whole frenzy around 'Back to the Future' but I sure didn't miss a thing about this flick. Indeed, I was just a little bit older than my own daughter when I watched it in the theater and I just loved the damned thing. Indeed, Zemeckis tried to make a convincing mix of animation and live-action. At the time, it was quite revolutionary and, at my young age, I thought it was just mind-blowing. Back then, I even had a book about this movie collecting all the stickers. Basically, I was a huge fan. Of course, later in my life, I had to re-watch it with my kids (that's the great thing when you get some kids of your own, you get an excuse to watch again all those childhood classics) and I was still impressed. I must admit it, the whole detective story was maybe not really original after all, but it was still really entertaining and, visually speaking, after all these years, it remains a great technical achievement.

“To be honest, I always had some mixed about this movie and it is definitely one I really need to re-watch at some point. Indeed, the first time I watched it, I thought it was not bad but it didn’t really convince me either. However, ever since I watched the damned thing, I can’t really stop thin” read more

“Right now, I’m actually reading ‘Les liaisons dangereuses’ in the original French language, it is a really great book and it reminds me that, maybe, I should give this modern adaptation a 2nd chance at some to point.  To be honest, I have always been amazed by how high rated the whole thing ” read more

Rain Man
Notes: Obviously, it is quite a big classic from the 80's but, to be honest, I have never been a huge fan of this flick. I mean, sure, it is not bad at all and quite entertaining and, indeed, I have to admit it, Dustin Hoffman gave quite an impressive performance but there were so many elements that really irritated me with this flick . Indeed, first of all, it gives the feeling that to a have a handicapped relative is like a walk in the park. Above all, something that really annoys me every time is when the guys from Hollywood make a picture about an autist, he always has to be some kind of genius... Of course, some autists are really gifted but just as much as non-autistic people (my stepson is autistic, he is a great guy and I love him but he is just a regular block, no great special talents and it doesn't make him less wonderful and interesting). Eventually, the whole thing doesn't have any edge, it is pretty much a straightforward road-trip about 2 brothers who at first can't stand each other but, at the end, of course, they realize that they are both awesome together. How unoriginal and pedestrian...

“To be honest, I thought it was rather difficult to judge this movie. Basically, if those guys would have made this movie 20 or 30 years ago, it would have been a huge hit but, now, it seems to be too late and this movie was indeed a box-office flop (at least, in the US, in the rest of the world, it ” read more

“Right now, it seems that the Bond franchise is in limbo after 2 massive box-office success and, at this point, it is not really clear if Daniel Craig will come back or be replaced. Eventually, in the future, this period would probably be considered as the Golden Age of this franchise. Unfortunately,” read more

Die Hard (1988)
Notes: When I was a kid, I used to watch it with my dad and I thought it was totally awesome. Later on, I used to underestimate this flick, thinking it was just a decent action movie but not much more than that. However, I re-watched it as a grown-up and I finally understood why I loved it so much back then and why it is considered as one of the best action movies ever made. Of course, the whole thing is full of clichés and stereotypes but those are so perfectly executed, as a result, I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole duration. There are loads of awesome and impressive action scenes but this movie has so much more to offer and it is the reason why it is still so enjoyable even 25 years later. In my opinion, the best thing about this movie is actually John McClane. Usually, action movie heroes are always some kind of super guy and I always find it rather tedious to watch. McClane is different though : he sweats, bleeds, laughs, cries, and you really have the feeling that he is going to die every 2 minutes and even though he manages to survive, he sure would rather be somewhere else. All this makes the whole thing just really compelling to watch. For Bruce Willis, it was a star making performance and he became a huge superstar. Of course, we shouldn’t forget to credit Alan Rickman who, in his acting debut, managed to create one of the most bad-ass bad guy ever.

“I wasn't really sure what to expect from this movie but since the ratings were pretty good, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, it turned out to be some kind of really f*ckep-up and mean-spirited version of 'Kramer vs Kramer' told from the point of view of the child. Basically, it was so sad an” read more

A very good movie

“What the hell happened to Michael Mann?!? Indeed, during the last 10 years, he has directed only 3 movies, ‘Miami Vice’ which was really disappointing, ‘Public Enemies’ which I have probably seriously overrated and finally ‘Blackhat’, easily one of the worst movies released in 2015.
