A good movie

“I already saw this movie (I think I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released) but, since it was such a long time ago, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, there is no denying that it was a fascinating story dealing with one of the greatest athletes that ever lived but, to” read more

Once Upon a Time in America
Notes: You know, sometimes, before watching a classic, you build up some huge expectations but when you finally watch the damned thing, especially after waiting for so many years, the end-result can let you down a little bit. Well, it didn't happen with this movie, that's for sure. Indeed, I kept hearing about it for many years and, finally, I got my hands on it and I was mesmerized from the beginning until the end. Basically, I think it is one of the best gangster movies ever made, no more, no less. Seriously, it's a shame that Leone couldn't make anymore movies after this one. So, indeed, the directing was just awesome and back then, Robert de Niro was at the top of his game and gave one of his best performances. Not only Leone didn't make another movie afterwards but the story behind the making of this masterpiece was just heartbreaking. Indeed, the poor fellow spent more than a decade working on this and when it was released, it was butchered by the studio, destroyed by the critics and a huge flop at the box-office. Eventually, Sergio Leone would die 5 years later and I'm not sure if he was still alive when the whole thing was restored to its original format.

A good movie

“A couple of weeks ago, I saw ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and many hoped that it would finally break the curse on video-game adaptations but, unfortunately, it turned out to be only midly entertaining. This time around, I decided to check the over high-profile video-game adaptation that was released in ” read more

chosen by Eric Notes: Well, I can't imagine a better way to start off this new year with the film club. Indeed, even though it was maybe not completely flawless, it wasn't far from it and I can't remember the last time I saw a movie combining so perfectly drama and comedy. Seriously, this movie was so funny, it was very often much more hilarious than most of your average comedies. And yet, it was dealing with a really tragic story but, somehow, this mix worked miraculously well. I think that, even though the acting was quite impressive, I enjoyed most of all the writing. Indeed, the two main characters (an uncle and his nephew) were just so fascinating, with so many layers, and their dialogues were just pure gold. The ending was also very effective without forcing these characters into a more traditional happy-ending. More than 15 years ago, I was lucky enough to see 'You Can Count on Me' when it was released, it was just great to see Kenneth Lonergan making such an impressive come-back and the guy displayed once again that he has a gift to show the complex relationships within a family. An average movie

“Unfortunately, it seems that Pixar has lost their magical touch as they nowadays focus mostly on sequels which might be profitable but also artistically rather boring. On the other hand, for about almost 15 years in a row, up until ‘Up’, those guys had an amazing track-record and they really spo” read more

A classic

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. First of all, I’m pretty sure that most people would think that ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest’ has been the best movie directed by Milos Forman but, the more I think about it, t” read more

Notes: It is rather funny to see that even before he got those monster budgets, James Cameron was already able to make some pretty awesome action scenes. I mean, 30 years later, the whole thing still holds up pretty good whereas most of the movies from the 80's look nowadays usually terribly cheesy. Of course, the story was rather preposterous but they still managed to create a fascinating mythology and a dreary vision of the future. On the other hand, there managed to provide many funny scenes and some great one liners along the way. Another masterstroke was that even though Schwarzenegger couldn't act whatsoever, since he was portraying an emotionless cyborg, it was just perfect. They even managed to fill in a romantic intrigue which wasn't annoying at all. Eventually, back then, action movies were R rated with a huge capital R and they weren't skirmish about those. Eventually, even though I'm usually not a great fan of action movies, I really loved this one and it is a great mix of action and SF.

The Natural
Notes: Seriously, it must be one of the most disappointing movies I have ever seen. I mean, it is not that the movie was actually really bad or anything but, somehow, I thought it would be way better than this. I don’t know, the whole concept of a baseball movie starring Robert Redford sounded pretty cool but the end-result was not really impressive, I’m afraid. To be honest, it had nothing to do with Mr Redford who was pretty awesome, as usual, but, apparently, I had more issues with the story itself. Indeed, the whole thing was trying to be some kind of epic and inspiring tale but I thought it was actually a really generic and pedestrian sport story and it was just terribly underwhelming and disappointing. Eventually, I was never really moved or touched by this story and I never really cared about any of the characters involved or what they what they were going through. I think it's too bad since the whole thing actually really had some potential and it could have been pretty awesome in my opinion.

Notes: At first, it started out as a rather standard teenage romantic-comedy, very soon, it was clear that the whole thing was actually really much more than that. First of all, some people argued that it was rather unbelievable that such a girl would fall in love with such a mess but I don’t agree at all. Indeed, in spite of his drinking problem, the main character was actually a popular guy who was nice with everyone and, since she never had a boyfriend, she idealized him like we all did with our first girlfriend/boyfriend (indeed, I still think that my first girlfriend was an actual goddess). Still, to be honest, I was not so sure about the drinking. I mean, it’s not that the main character was drinking a lot, in fact, the guy was actually constantly drinking (I think he had a drink in 95% of the scenes). It was an interesting look on a very young alcoholic but I still think it was strange that not one of his friends or his sister or his mother would ever actually mention it at any moment. Anyway, I thought that both characters were fascinating thanks to some strong performances by Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. Eventually, it was one of the best teenage romantic dramas I have seen, in fact, I think it might be even better than ‘The Perks of Being a Walflower'.
