A good movie

“Before this movie was released, there was a really good buzz about the damned thing and many expected it to be a front-runner for the Best Picture Academy award and, as a result, launching for good the directing career of Angelina Jolie. Eventually, when it came out, it didn't turn out to be such a ” read more

The Escape
[youtube id=jzUFCQ-P1Zg] Note: After the disappearance of geneticist Dr. Nora Phillips and the exposure of the Molecular Genetics company's illegal activities in human cloning, the FBI carries out a raid on the facility in order to arrest and take custody of its key people. One surviving specimen, Lily, is escorted by a ruthless mercenary and gunman named Holt to be delivered to an unnamed customer who bought the specimen. The Driver is hired to transport the package to the rightful location with Holt "babysitting" him, ordering the hired driver to evade the FBI forces. En route to delivering Lily, the Driver develops a strong dislike for Holt's violent and inhuman treatment of Lily as an object rather than a human being. He kicks the mercenary out of the car by subduing him and holding him at gunpoint. Holt pursues the Driver and tries to stop the car with a sniper rifle via helicopter, but the Driver incapacitates Holt's comrades and leaves him in the middle of the road to be arrested by the FBI, after a long and intense chase. Eventually, the Driver delivers Lily to the extraction point where she informs him that Dr. Phillips created her along with three others, who are now gone. She's surprised to learn that Dr. Phillips is the actual customer who takes maternal custody of Lily and leaves the soil with her at the docks. A good movie

“To be honest, I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since Roger Ebert chose it as one of the best movies released in 2012, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I thought it was indeed a sweet gentle drama and both leads gave some strong performances (it was especial” read more

An average movie

“More than 10 years ago, John McTiernan released this movie which would be, so far, his last directing effort. Indeed, in the following years, he had some major issue with the Justice system since roughly 2007 and in 2013, he was sentenced to federal prison to serve a one-year term for lying to FBI a” read more

She's Gotta Have It
Notes: What I liked the most was the fact it was so much lighter than Spike Lee's usual work which was just so refreshing. Then, even though it was sometimes slightly pretentious, which was rather expected from a directing debut, I really liked the directing with some neat black-and-white photography. Still, even though Tracy Camilla Johns was quite gorgeous and seriously charismatic, it was still difficult to root for this character with some massive commitment issues. Indeed, it is interesting to point that, so far in his career, Spike Lee has made only 2 movies with a female main character, this one dealing with a woman who sleeps pretty much with everybody and 'Girl 6' who was dealing with a woman becoming a phone-sex operator. Still, even if the material didn't completely work, it was pretty neat how Spike Lee managed to deliver some rather complex and flawed characters.

A classic

“Recently, I just finished to read ‘Les liaisons dangereuses’ and, even though it was a tough read, I really enjoyed the damned thing so I thought it was a nice opportunity to re-watch this movie since I hadn’t see it for so many years. A bad movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie but since it is considered as one of the worst movies ever, I don’t think I will waste my time by watching it a 2nd time. In fact, even though it might sound surprising, I actually saw the damned thing when it was released in the movie” read more

Children of a Lesser God (1986)
Notes: Even though I thought it was pretty good, it was nothing really great. The first issue I had is that the whole thing was some obvious Oscar-bait (dramas based on handicap or diseases always score well with the Academy). I was also concerned at first because it started pretty much like 'Dead Poets Society' with the excentric teacher who becomes really popular with the kids and, of course, the conventional director becomes his nemesis... Thankfully, it didn't go that road and instead we got a rather striking love story involving the two leads, one hearing, the other obviously not. There were some very strong stuff here and William Hurt and Marlee Matlin were both really good in this. Still, I was missing something. I mean, the whole thing got stuck really soon because they were both stubborn (he wants her to speak, she doesn't want to...). I mean, at least half of the movie was about this conflict which was rather disappointing. For example, I heard that Hurt and Matlin became an item for a couple years but, apparently, their relationship was really stormy with some substance abuse on both sides. Now, that sounds a little bit more compelling. Finally, like Roger Ebert pointed out, you wonder why there is not one single scene during which William Hurt stopped translating what they say so you could finally experience this peculiar world of silence. Still, in spite of its flaws, it is probably the best movie dealing with this subject.

A classic

“Since this movie had a really solid reputation, I was quite eager to check it out. Apparently, this movie was first developed as a sequel to ‘Mr. Deeds Goes to Town’ but since Gary Cooper was not available, they changed the name of the main character and they gave this part to James Stewart who ” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick but even though it is a rather obscure feature, I thought actually pretty good. Rambo: First Blood Part II
It was actually directed by George P. Cosmatos, James Cameron wrote the screenplay. I have to admit it, even though I didn’t care much about the damned thing, I turned out to be much better than I expected. Still, even though James Cameron did write the screenplay for this movie, it was apparently vastly changed by Sylvester Stallone afterwards. Anyway, it was basically a brainless action movie which was too bad because the first instalment was actually rather thoughtful. Still, I have to admit that the damned thing was sometimes quite entertaining, at least for the most part of it.

Salvador (1986)
Notes: For many years, Oliver Stone was a struggling director and at the time of production, he thought that this movie was going to be his last chance. However, in 1986, he made two movies which both managed to be, at least critically, successful. Of course, we all remember 'Platoon', crowned with the highest prize, in my opinion the best movie about the Vietnam war and rightfully considered as his magnum opus. However, we tend to forget the other movie he made back then in 1986, a movie so overlooked that it did not have a wide distribution in the United States. Eventually, it was re-released after the success of 'Platoon'. Anyway, it is actually a damned fine picture. Indeed, it is one of those edgy movies that Stone used to make before going soft. The subject was topical with some very good performances, even by James Belushi, usually one of the least interesting actors I have ever seen. James Woods, a really underrated actor, gave one of his typical nervous performances and I think he was really good in this.
