An average movie

“I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I always had a weak spot for Nicolas Cage and Samuel L. Jackson, I thought I might as well check it out. Apparently, it was rather poorly received and also a box-office flop when it was released but I thought it was still a decent watch. ” read more

A very good movie

“It is a rather obscure feature and it has been a while since I saw the damnedĀ  thing. I wonder how I actually ended up watching this movie but my guess is that it was a big critical success when it was released so I ended up watching Ā the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Notes: Personally, I have never been a huge fan of ā€˜The Silence of The Lambsā€™. Sure, I did like it, it is definitely an entertaining flick but, in my opinion, it is a seriously over the top thriller with some preposterous scenes. The sad thing is that even though this movie has become a huge classic, many people tend to forget that it wasnā€™t actually the first film starring Hannibal Lecter. Indeed, 5 years before, Michael Mann directed this flick which was an adaptation of ā€˜Red Dragonā€™ which would be remade more than 15 years later by Brett Ratner. All right, I have to admit it, it wasnā€™t better than ā€˜The Silence of the Lambsā€™ which still remains by far the best movie involving Lecter but it was still pretty good though and it sure deserves to get more attention. The most interesting thing about this flick is how vastly different the mood and the tone was. I also enjoyed Brian Coxā€™s performance as it was something really different than Anthony Hopkins'. Indeed, his Lector was much more down to earth which was very welcome.

A good movie

“I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it has won the Golden Kalf of the best Dutch movie of the year, I was quite eager to check it out. In fact, the Dutch movie industry is so limited that there are basically only 2 kind of movies that manage to win this prize. Indeed, the” read more

A good movie

“Basically, thatā€™s another really obscure French movie. In fact, it is so obscure that, even 6 years later, Iā€™m still the only Listal member who has rated the damned thing. Well, to be honest, I really wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing at the time. Anyway, it is basically o” read more

Notes: First of all, I have to admit that I have a somewhat difficult relationship with David Lynch. I mean, by now, I have seen all his movies and even though I admire his work and considered him a genuine artist, I usually have a hard time to enjoy most of his features and this movie was a perfect example. Indeed, as usual with Lynch, the beginning was a spellbinding and thrilling film noir which would have made Hitchcock proud. But then, again as usual with this director, he obviously didn't care about the plot, he seamelessly threw it out the window and what remained was a succession of weird and unsettling scenes. In my opinion, it is a pattern used too often by David Lynch and I always find it eventually more frustrating than rewarding. Still, the directing was really neat and there was a fine cast involved, above all Dennis Hopper was really impressive and probably gave here his best performance ever. Eventually, even though it is an acquired taste, there are still plenty things to love here.

A good movie

“Before this movie was released, there was a very good buzz about it and many thought that Steve Carell had a shot at winning the Academy Award for for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role but, eventually, when it was released, it didnā€™t turn out to be such a huge critical success aft” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a years since I have seen this movie and I should really re-watch it at some point. Well, in Oliver Stoneā€™s filmography, this movie definitely has a solid reputation but, even though I really loved 'Platoon', I didn't think his 2nd Vietnam feature was really so amazing. Notes: For some reasons, even though I have been following Woody Allenā€™s work for several decades now, I have never been a huge fan of this movie. I mean, the first time I saw it, I was much younger and maybe I wasnā€™t able to really appreciate it but, eventually, after all these years, I have to admit that there is no doubt that it was actually better than anything Allen has done during the last 20 years. Anyway, when it was released, it was definitely a big success and, with a box office gross of over $40 million, it was Woody Allen's most financially successful film until ā€˜Match Pointā€™ was released almost 20 years later. I donā€™t know, in my case, even though there was a stellar cast involved (Mia Farrow, Barbara Hershey, Carrie Fisher, Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, Max von Sydow, Woody Allen) and the story itself was fairly entertaining, it never really reached the level of such Allenā€™s classics like ā€˜Manhattanā€™ or ā€˜Annie Hallā€™.

It was actually directed by Angelina Jolie, the Coen brothers wrote the screenplay. Before this movie was released, there was a really good buzz about the damned thing and many expected it to be a front-runner for the Best Picture Academy award and, as a result, launching for good the directing career of Angelina Jolie. Eventually, when it came out, it didn't turn out to be such a huge critical success after all and it vanished rather quickly. In fact, it is pretty easy to understand why. I mean, Jolie went for a project which seemed to be some pure gold. Indeed, she was working with acclaimed DOP Roger Deakins, the screenplay was written by the Coen brothers and, above all, it was simply an amazing story. Unfortunately, even though this true tale was quite incredible, it turned out to be a decent watch but it certainly didn't result in a great movie, I'm afraid. The main issue, I guess, was that even though Jolie made sure she didn't mess it up, she also never managed to go beyond simply telling the life story of Louis Zamperini. Indeed, there was really not much depth and, in this case, since we all knew how it would end, there was a desperate need to tell more than just the facts.
