An average movie

“Since my wife and I both have a weak spot for romantic-comedies, I thought we might as well check this one out.  In my case, I was above all really intrigued to see this couple played by such great actors like Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. Furthermore, even though our Western world is getting o” read more

A good movie

“Who the hell is Lake Bell? I mean, I actually know who she is, I have seen her in a few movies but most of them were rather weak and even though she always seemed to have some potential, she was always stuck with some forgettable small parts. Well, maybe that’s why she decided to write, direct, ” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch at it some point but, on the other hand, I’m not sure if it is a movie that really needs to be watched a couple of times. I mean, in my opinion, with such an intereting cast (Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton” read more

Shoah (1985)
Notes: To be honest, with its running time of more than 9 hours, it was slightly daunting and I wonder if it is really watchable in one sitting. In my case, I split it in 5 bits and it worked fine this way. Anyway, coming back to the movie itself, it wasn't a great movie, it turned out to be one of the best movies I have ever seen, no less than that. It is such a poweful and an important movie, I believe it should be a compulsory watch in school for all the teenagers. I mean, I have seen many movies dealing with WWII but even the great classics like 'Schindler's List' or 'The Pianist' don't come near the brutality displayed in this shattering documentary. Indeed, we have all heard about the holocaust but, with this movie, the total horror comes so close, following testimonies of the victims, the perpetrators and people who just happened to be around at the time. What happened at the time was so awful, it has been ever since a trauma for the whole world but above all for Europa. 30 years later, all the people involved have now passed away making this movie even more valuable.

A classic

“I have actually already watched this movie but since it was a while back and since I had this movie on DVD, I thought I should check it out again. First of all, I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of musicals but this one was definitely an exception. Sure, it was yet another adaptation” read more

The Knick
Notes: Well, it did sound promising but, in fact, it turned to be much better than I expected. Indeed, the whole thing looked great, it was fascinating to behold and Clive Owen gave here easily one of his best performances. Concerning Steven Soderbergh, it was the best thing he has delivered since 'Traffic' and, apparently, it was totally worth it that he went into (temporary) retirement to direct this great TV-show.

A good movie

“Even though this movie seems to be rather forgotten nowadays, in my opinion, from all the movies directed by Sam Raimi, it is actually probably the best one he has delivered if you put aside the Evil Dead trilogy. As a matter of fact, it was hardly a personal project as Raimi was not even the first ” read more

The Color Purple (1985)
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should give it a 2nd chance at some point. Sure, when it was released, it was critically heralded , it was even nominated for 11 Academy Awards (it won none eventually) but even though it was loved by many viewers, I thought that the whole thing was actually rather disappointing. Indeed, basically, I thought it was a decent drama but nothing really amazing and, in my opinion, it was pretty obvious that it was Steven Spielberg's first attempt at this genre. Indeed, it tends to get rather over-sentimental and it downgrades some important aspects in this story such as the lesbian relationship which was reduced to a chaste kiss whereas, in the book, it went a little bit further than that and in full details. Still, for a first drama, it was not bad at all and, like I said before, many people really love this movie so it is still definitely worth a look.

The Next Karate Kid

A bad movie

“Even though the 2nd sequel of ‘The Karate Kid’ franchise seemed to be a critical and commercial failure, for some reasons, they still decided to come up with a new instalment, this time, with a girl playing the lead character. Well, right from the start, it seemed to be a really misguided projec” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it is another rather obscure feature and I wonder how I actually ended up watching the damned thing. My guess is that I decided to check it out because there was such an interesting cast involved (Alan Cumming, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Parker Posey, Phoebe Cates, Kevin Kline, John C. Reil” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been ages since I have seen this movie but, if I recall it correctly, I actually saw it in the movie theater when it was released. Anyway, in my opinion, the masterstroke was to have Rupert Everett playing one of the main characters.  Indeed, back then, I had a huge weak spot f” read more

A Room with a View
Notes: To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of costumes dramas. Indeed, even though they can be entertaining, I always have a hard time to care about all those white rich people whining about they so-called difficult life. I mean, when they are complaining about the fact that they can’t marry the woman/man/dog/whatever they love, most of the common folks were starving and working for hours to make sure the privileged one could sustain their life style. Still, I have to admit, some movies in this genre are really good and this flick is one fine example. Not surprisingly, it was directed by James Ivory, the grand-master of the genre. The story was for once intriguing and the directing by Ivory was just really solid just as usual. Eventually, the main attraction was to see Helena Bonham Carter and Daniel Day-Lewis in their breakthrough performances. Above all, I was once again really impressed by Day-Lewis. Indeed, if you are familiar with his work, you’ll notice that what he has created here (a repressed, snobbish Edwardian upperclassman) was really different than his other characters but it was still completely convincing and just impressive to behold.
