The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
Notes: When I watched this flick, I was still a huge fan of Woody Allen's work and since it is considered a classic, I had some rather high expectations. Unfortunately, I didn’t really connect with it. I mean, it was definitely a decent effort and you could see that Woody Allen really put a lot of effort with this one but, somehow, I had a hard time to care about the whole thing. Still, I will probably re-watch it whenever I get the opportunity to finally make up my mind for good about the whole thing. To conclude, even though it didn’t really blow me away, it is still definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Woody Allen’s work.

A good movie

“Recently, I saw ‘Trainwreck’ and I thought I might as well check this movie since it was the last one directed by Judd Apatow that I hadn’t see so far. Well, even though it was maybe nothing really amazing, I actually think it might be actually the best movie delivered by Apatow so far, at lea” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been ages since I saw this movie but I remember it very well. Back then, I was still living in France and there was a huge buzz about this movie before it was released. Indeed, it was the 2nd directing effort of Alain Chabat, there was a star-studded cast, the original animated ” read more

An average movie

“I remember it very well, when ‘Analyze This’ was released, everyone praised Robert De Niro for trying something so drastically different than his usual work. Indeed, it was basically a commercial comedy but it was pretty neat that De Niro would choose to make fun of his legacy and, above all, th” read more

An average movie

“Since my wife and I both have a weak spot for romantic-comedies, I thought we might as well check this one out.  In my case, I was above all really intrigued to see this couple played by such great actors like Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. Furthermore, even though our Western world is getting o” read more

A good movie

“Who the hell is Lake Bell? I mean, I actually know who she is, I have seen her in a few movies but most of them were rather weak and even though she always seemed to have some potential, she was always stuck with some forgettable small parts. Well, maybe that’s why she decided to write, direct, ” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch at it some point but, on the other hand, I’m not sure if it is a movie that really needs to be watched a couple of times. I mean, in my opinion, with such an intereting cast (Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton” read more

Shoah (1985)
Notes: To be honest, with its running time of more than 9 hours, it was slightly daunting and I wonder if it is really watchable in one sitting. In my case, I split it in 5 bits and it worked fine this way. Anyway, coming back to the movie itself, it wasn't a great movie, it turned out to be one of the best movies I have ever seen, no less than that. It is such a poweful and an important movie, I believe it should be a compulsory watch in school for all the teenagers. I mean, I have seen many movies dealing with WWII but even the great classics like 'Schindler's List' or 'The Pianist' don't come near the brutality displayed in this shattering documentary. Indeed, we have all heard about the holocaust but, with this movie, the total horror comes so close, following testimonies of the victims, the perpetrators and people who just happened to be around at the time. What happened at the time was so awful, it has been ever since a trauma for the whole world but above all for Europa. 30 years later, all the people involved have now passed away making this movie even more valuable.

A classic

“I have actually already watched this movie but since it was a while back and since I had this movie on DVD, I thought I should check it out again. The Knick
Notes: Well, it did sound promising but, in fact, it turned to be much better than I expected. Indeed, the whole thing looked great, it was fascinating to behold and Clive Owen gave here easily one of his best performances. Concerning Steven Soderbergh, it was the best thing he has delivered since 'Traffic' and, apparently, it was totally worth it that he went into (temporary) retirement to direct this great TV-show.

A good movie

“Even though this movie seems to be rather forgotten nowadays, in my opinion, from all the movies directed by Sam Raimi, it is actually probably the best one he has delivered if you put aside the Evil Dead trilogy. As a matter of fact, it was hardly a personal project as Raimi was not even the first ” read more

The Color Purple (1985)
Notes: To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should give it a 2nd chance at some point. Sure, when it was released, it was critically heralded , it was even nominated for 11 Academy Awards (it won none eventually) but even though it was loved by many viewers, I thought that the whole thing was actually rather disappointing. Indeed, basically, I thought it was a decent drama but nothing really amazing and, in my opinion, it was pretty obvious that it was Steven Spielberg's first attempt at this genre. Indeed, it tends to get rather over-sentimental and it downgrades some important aspects in this story such as the lesbian relationship which was reduced to a chaste kiss whereas, in the book, it went a little bit further than that and in full details. Still, for a first drama, it was not bad at all and, like I said before, many people really love this movie so it is still definitely worth a look.
