A good movie

“Since I really loved ‘Man on Wire’, of course, I was really eager to check this new dramatic version, even if I had some doubts. Indeed, the first issue with this movie was that ‘Man on Wire’ was such a flawless feature, it was quite an impossible task to provide something even better and ev” read more

An average movie

“To be honest, it is a rather obscure movie and it has been ages since I have seen it. In fact, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released, probably because the lovely Patricia Arquette was involved. Indeed, just a year before, she gave her breakthrough performance in ‘Tr” read more

RoboCop (1987)
Notes: When I was a kid, I watched this flick and I just loved it. For Paul Verhoeven, the great Dutch master, it was his ticket to Hollywood and it was a downright success. You see on a regular basis promising European directors hired by Hollywood but most of those features are just disappointing. Not this one though. Indeed, even though it is a studio feature, Verhoeven managed to keep his twisted violent vision and gave us a relentless action flick. The last time I watched it, it was the unrated version and not only my step-son was watching but also my wife and she was rather shocked about how violent the whole thing was. Indeed, nowadays, the violence in action movies is terribly toned down so when you watch a good old action flick from the 80's, you have to adjust a little bit because the blood is coming out in liters, the heads are exploding and the limbs are flying in the air, all in close-up. Furthermore, there is a lot of pitch black humor and the combination with the violence was pretty unique, awesome and really true to Verhoeven's style. I have to admit that even though Robocop looked pretty cool, when he walks, he did look pretty cheesy and the special effects in general were pretty cheesy as well. Still, it is a well made SF flick, no doubt about it.

A good movie

“I have always been a huge fan of Michael Moore's work and, if I recall it correctly, I saw this movie some time after I saw ‘Bowling for Columbine’ which is still, by far, his very best movie. Anyway, 8 long years after ‘Roger & Me’, Moore was finally coming up with a new documentary and” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. In fact, back then , the main reason I wanted to watch the damned thing was because Robert De Niro was involved and, at the time, I had no idea that Alfonso Cuaron would turn out to be one of the most interesting directors of his genera” read more

Bull Durham (1988)
Notes: Throughout his career Kevin Costner has made 3 baseball movies and, in my opinion, this one was easily the best of them and, actually, pretty much the only one I actually really enjoyed. Indeed, ‘For Love of the Game’ was universally panned and was pretty lame but ‘Field of Dreams’, usually considered the best of the bunch, was actually rather underwhelming. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I thought that Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon were both pretty good and Costner has never been better than when playing such melancholic characters. Furthermore, there was an interesting grittiness and I liked how realistic the movie looked and sounded. Indeed, the characters were really three dimensional and I enjoyed the fact that the story was down to earth and entertaining at the same time.

An average movie

“Back then, when it was released, it was a big a critical and commercial flop and I actually already saw the damned thing but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well give it a 2nd chance.  Well, it turned out to be even worse than I remembered.
