Wow... another positive review coming from you! That's rather exceptional... The funny thing is that even though you keep saying that it is a great movie, apparently the only reason you liked it was

Top Gun (1986)
Notes: To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of this movie. I know, it is a huge classic from the 80's but I just didn't really like it much. I'm maybe too harsh but, honestly, if you put aside all the impressive flying scenes, what else do you have? In my opinion, you have actually a rather weak and predictable plot with some poorly developed characters. I mean, sure, Tom Cruise, in his breakthrough performance, was really charismatic but it was hardly his best work and I can’t say I was really convinced by his relationship with Kelly McGillis. Honestly, the whole thing was pretty much just a recruiting commercial for the Air Force, not much more than that, I'm afraid. Eventually, even though it was watchable and somewhat entertaining, I don’t think it is actually really good, I would go as far as saying that it is actually pretty damned average.

A classic

“Since this movie had a really solid reputation, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, to be honest, I have to admit that I always had a hard time with the screwball comedies and, even though this movie is probably one of the most famous in this genre, I still had a hard time to really car” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. In fact, I’m pretty sure I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. Well, I have to admit it, it is definitely one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen. A very good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was such a long ago, I was really eager to check it out again. Well, even after all these years, it is still a really awesome flick. Sure, it might not be Tim Burton's best directing effort but it is definitely his most fun movie to watch. Above all, his biggest” read more

Stand by Me
Notes: It is easily the best movie dealing with children that I have ever seen. It is widely known that to make a movie with children is one of the most difficult things for multiple reasons and most of the features dealing with this subject are either phony or terribly condescending. Not this flick though. Indeed, for once, Stephen King dropped his horror shenanigans and instead wrote a simple but really efficient and completely heartfelt youth story and Rob Reiner created one of the best adaptations of a King book. Of course, I shouldn't forget to mention the terrific cast, especially those 4 kids were just downright amazing, giving some of the best children performances you'll ever see. The whole melancholy and sadness generated by this movie was even more grabbing when you think that the great River Phoenix would die only 7 years later.

An average movie

“Well, this movie was unfortunately Paul Verhoeven’s last success in the US and everything he made afterwards in America didn’t really work. And, of course, this feature also turned Sharon Stone into a major star but it’s such a pity that almost everything she did afterwards was eventually real” read more

Troll Hunter
Original Title: 'Trolljegeren' Country: Norway Directed by: André Øvredal Plot: A group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter. Note: By now, you might think that the found-footage gimmick has been done to death but, apparently, the film makers still manage to find some way to be creative with this concept. Indeed, in this case, we get the opportunity to go all the way to Norway to follow some kind of troll hunter during the shooting of a mockumentary. Eventually, the end result was not bad and, above all, I liked the way they managed to mix comedy and horror which can be a tricky thing to do.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Notes: I remember very well the first time I saw the damned thing. In fact, at the time, I had never heard of this flick before and it is my brother-in-law who brought it to our attention saying that it had a very notorious reputation, that it was one of the scariest movies ever made. So, we sat there with the 3 of us (my sister, her boyfriend and myself), expecting something really horrible to happen but, to be honest, we didn’t care much for the whole thing. I mean, sure, it was well made and Michael Rooker gave a really solid performance but, in my opinion, the movie didn’t have much else to offer. Basically, it is a decent serial-killer flick and the only original thing was that the guy didn’t get caught at the end. Apparently, that was something that deeply shocked the viewers at the time, that someone so evil would get away with doing something so terrible but, to be honest, I thought this approach was clever but not much more than that, I’m afraid.

Goodbye, Children
Notes: It is probably one of the most heralded movies made by Louis Malle and it even won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film festival back in those days. 10 years before, Louis Malle made another movie about France during WWII called 'Lacombe Lucien'. Personally, I did prefer 'Lacombe Lucien' because it was more original, a dark really unique view of this time period in France. This movie was more a crowd pleaser but it was still really good nonetheless. Apparently, even though it wasn't really autobiographical, it was still based on Malle's youth memories. Eventually, even though the whole thing was not really original, it was a very well made drama, probably the best in its genre. Indeed, I really loved the understated directing and the children were just downright amazing. Indeed, it follows more or less the rules of the formulas (an outsider comes to a school, at first there is some apprehension but then, of course, they become friends before the ultimate separation) but the characters and the emotions displayed felt really genuine.
