An average movie

“This movie didn't make much waves when it was released since I have always had a weak spot for Tom Tykwer's work, I was still eager to check it out. Futhermore, after 'Cloud Atlas', Tykwer was working again with Tom Hanks and I thought it was pretty neat to Hanks involving in some smaller project li” read more

A good movie

“I have noticed that this movie tends to be rather underrated  but, I have to admit it, it is definitely one of my guilty pleasures. Indeed, just a year after ‘The Truman Show’, they tried to release another movie dealing with this new TV hype, the ‘reality TV’ shows (it is difficult to beli” read more

Cast : Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, Natalie Dormer What was it about? The merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda. My two cents:  Eventually, even though it was indeed a decent watch, to be honest, I can’t say I was really impressed by the whole thing. The first problem I had is that I had never heard of James Hunt before. I assumed that it was because of my lack of interest in Formula 1 but, at the end of the movie, we learned that Hunt just won one championship and retired pretty soon afterwards. From this point of view, it seems hard to believe that the guy was actually such a legend. Then, there is of course the problem that it was directed by Ron Howard. I mean, sure, for a Howard feature, it was pretty gritty but it was certainly not gritty enough and you can’t help wondering what would Paul Greengrass would have done with this material (Indeed, Greengrass was supposed to direct this movie and Howard was supposed to direct ‘Captain Phillips’ but they switched projet during the development stage). Still, the whole thing was well made, with some solid performances by Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl and, above all, it was quite entertaining. My rating: 07/10 Check the full review

Cast : John Krasinski What was it about? During an attack on a U.S. compound in Libya, a security team struggles to make sense out of the chaos. My two cents: Well, even though it was rather well received (according to IMDb, it is his best movie after 'The Rock'), it was pretty much a box-office flop and it is so far Michael Bay's lowest grossing movie so far. Basically, that's how it works, if they guy makes a really dumb movie about some gigantic robots, it will make billions, but if he tries to make something slightly smarter, nobody will care apparently. Anyway, how was the damned thing anyway? Well, I have to admit that it was probably one of the better movies directed by Bay and I thought it was a decent watch but, to be honest, it was still nothing really great in my opinion. First of all, even though it was some interesting stunt casting to have John Krasinski to play in an action movie like this one, he never really convinced me. I mean, physically, he looked fine but I never had the feeling that I was watching a seasoned soldier, something he even kept repeating throughout the damned thing. Then, even though they took a realistic approach, I thought it was still rather murky. What was the GRS? Feb 17? What were they doing there? Indeed, even though it was fairly long, too long, Bay spent a lot of time trying to set up the mood between these soldiers which wasn't necessarily a bad idea but I actually had a hard time to get a real grip on this story. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I think it was actually a decent effort from this director. My rating: 6/10 Check the full review

An average movie

“Well, after directing some of the biggest and dumbest blockbusters ever, Michael Bay decided to take a break and, this time, he went for something cheaper but still pretty dumb but guess what? I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, basically, it was dealing with a really ridiculous story and I” read more

“It has been a while since I saw this flick but I’m pretty sure I actually saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released. It is usually considered as one of the better movies delivered by Woody Allen in the 90’s. Indeed, it was nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Screenp” read more

Batman
Notes: Nowadays, Marvel is pretty much ruling the box-office but there was a time when they were nowhere to be found and it was DC who came out with some very successful super-hero features. First, at the end of the 70's, with 'Superman', and then, 10 years later with this movie focusing this time on the Dark Knight. I remember it very well when it came out, there was a huge buzz about this movie. Indeed, you could see the famous logo all over the place, there was some Batman merchandising everywhere and me and my little brother even got some Batman sweaters at the time. Basically, it was huge and pretty much the biggest film event at the time. With all this excitement, I just had to see it pretty bad and , back in those days (I was 9-10 years old), I was just really blown away by the whole thing. Indeed, I had never seen something like this before and I thought it was just awesome. Eventually, I think it is above really enjoyable when you are just a kid and, of course, 20 years later, it does look pretty cheesy, especially when you compare it to Christopher Nolan's trilogy but back in those days, it was really groundbreaking and it still deserve a lot of respect. Back then, Tim Burton was really a creative force and it is a real shame that he has pretty much lost his touch nowadays.

Notes: Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out and I had some rather high expectations towards this feature. Well, to be honest, even though it turned out to be a decent watch, I really failed to see what was supposed to be so amazing about this movie and I seriously had a hard time to connect with the damned thing. I mean, sure, Kevin Costner was quite charismatic but this whimsical nostalgic tone was nothing for me. You might argue that the fact that I didn’t have much knowledge about baseball didn’t really help but I think the biggest issue I had, aside from this really sweet and gentle tone, was this mix with some fantasy elements. Eventually, the whole thing was some kind of fairy tale mixing some genuine vintage facts about baseball with a basic family drama but I’m afraid I never really cared enough for both aspects of this tale. In my opinion, it is a movie that is still pretty much a cult-classic but it remains a rather acquired taste.
