An average movie

“Like many other actors, Adam Sandler has been struggling lately so it is hardly surprising that he would finally come up with a sequel at some point. At least, you have to give him some credit that he didn’t try before to recycle all his previous hits like ‘Billy Madison’ or ‘Happy Gilmore” read more

Grown Ups 2
Victim: Salma Hayek Worldwide Gross: $246,984,278 Note: I remember when ‘Grown Ups’ was released, even though it was rather successful at the box-office, many considered that it was one of the worst movies released at the time but, to be honest, even though I usually don’t like Sandler’s work at all, I thought it was not one of his worst movies, far from it. Well, this sequel gave me pretty much the same feeling. Indeed, even though the concept had some potential, the whole thing was still rather underwhelming but, at least, it was rather harmless and some of the jokes actually did work. Eventually, the most disappointing thing about this movie was how completely random it felt. Anyway, even though everybody thought it was rather terrible, it is still made a lot of money at the box-office.

A good movie

“It's only recently that I came across this movie and I was rather impressed by its rating on IMDb (7.6) so I was quite eager to check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be one of these hyperlink movies but while I used to love this genre (Alejandro González Iñárritu for example made a cou” read more

A good movie

“Not so long ago, I saw 'Foxcatcher' and I know it might seem weird to watch so soon after this documentary. The point is that, even if I did like 'Foxcatcher', it didn't completely blow me away and, above all, it bothered me that the whole thing remained so dammed ambiguous. As a result, I was quite” read more

Valhalla Rising
Original Title: 'Valhalla Rising' Country: Denmark Directed by: Nicolas Winding Refn With: Mads Mikkelsen Plot: 1000 AD, for years, One Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the Norse chieftain Barde. Aided by Are, a boy slave, One Eye slays his captor and together he and Are escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight, One Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that clears only as the crew sights an unknown land. As the new world reveals its secrets and the Vikings confront their terrible and bloody fate, One Eye discovers his true self. Note: Unfortunately, I thought the whole thing was rather disappointing. Indeed, it has been a while since I saw such an event-less feature. Basically, it starts as some kind of weird Viking Fight Club but, then, as soon as the main character escaped, nothing much really happened. There were about 120 lines of dialogue and the main character didn't say a word during the whole thing but I was fine with that. Still, I cannot dismiss this movie. Indeed, it was visually impressive with a great mood and some solid directing and even though it was awfully slow, it was still rather spellbinding above all thanks to Mads Mikkelsen who gave here another electrifying performance.

The Big Chill
Notes: Back in the 80’s, Lawrence Kasdan was really on fire. Not only he wrote some of the biggest box-office successes of the time, he managed also to launch a very successful directing career as well. Unfortunately, later on, his movies were honestly not that good and it has been at least 20 years since he has written or directed something really worthwhile. Anyway, this movie was his second directing effort and, even though it is nowadays pretty much forgotten, it was critically heralded when it was released. Indeed, there was quite an impressive cast and they all delivered some solid performances which were probably the most attractive aspect of this flick. There was even Kevin Costner who was unknown at the time but his scenes were cut eventually. Personally, I enjoyed above all William Hurt who was one of the best actors at work in the 80’s. Such a shame his career didn’t keep up later on as he is definitely one of the most underrated actors at work nowadays.

A good movie

“I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again.  Well, first of all, I have to point out that I’m a huge fan of Pink Floyd, it is easily one of my favorite bands, and The Wall was one of their best albums so, obviously, I ” read more
