A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point.  First of all, the fact that I have not read the book probably allowed me to enjoy this movie more than it might deserve but I always had a weak spot for the damned thing and I believe it is” read more

Beverly Hills Cop
Notes: By now, I have seen all the movies starring Eddie Murphy and it has been a very thankless task. Indeed, it is not very often that you come across an actor who managed so thoroughly to destroy his career. However, it hasn’t been always like that for Murphy. Indeed, in the 80’s, he was definitely one of the most popular actors, maybe even the most popular one, and this movie was a huge success and it has become by far his most iconic part. With this in mind, I had some rather high expectations and, to be honest, I thought it was slightly underwhelming. The point is that the whole thing sounded great on paper but I thought that the end-result was decent but nothing really mind-blowing. I don’t know, in my opinion, it seemed that the makers were happy with the concept and just let Eddie Murphy throw some funny one-liners without really developping this concept. Therefore, I thought the timing was a little bit off. Surprisingly, I actually prefer the 2nd installment which had a better mix between the hard action scenes by expert Tony Scott and the wild humor provided by Murphy.

A good movie

“To be honest, I'm not really sure what to make of this movie. In fact, I think I will need to re-watch it again to make up my mind for good about the damned thing. On the other hand, as my wife pointed out after we watched it together, maybe, I shoudn't spend too much time on this and move on. Anywa” read more

“To be honest, I was actually planning to skip this movie but Nick, my step-son, was really eager to check it out so we still end up watching the damned thing. First of all, even though it looks really cool, I have to admit that I have actually never played this video-game. Anyway, concerning the mov” read more

A good movie

“To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch  it at some point. First of all, for Jodie Foster, this movie was a huge milestone. A very good movie

“I already saw this movie, in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released, but, since it was a while back and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out again. First of all, even though, by now, I have managed to watch most of the movies directed by Mi” read more

The Killing Fields (1984)
Notes: Even though there has been countless movies about the Vietnam war, the conflict in Cambodia has been criminally forgotten whereas there was there a massive genocide which was still taking place even when this movie was released. Only therefore, it is already a really important feature. Like many other movies dealing with foreign conflicts like ‘Cry Freedom’ or ‘Shooting Dogs’, it uses the gimmick of having an occidental main character so we can easier focus and identify with what’s going on but, for once, this gimmick didn’t bother me. Furthermore, even though it was Roland Joffé’s directing debut, the directing was really efficient and this depiction of war was really relentless and quite heartbreaking. Eventually, the ultimate masterstroke was to give a good chunk of the story to Dith Pran, amazingly played by a non-professional actor called Haing S. Nor who was himself a survivor from the Khmer Rouge. It made the whole thing much more compelling to watch and it is hard to imagine what it must have been to play this character after what he has been through.

“This was already the 3rd Dutch movie I saw this week and, out of the 3, the one I enjoyed the most. First of all, it was the first directing effort for Mike van Diem, 18 long years after ‘Karakter’ for which he managed to win the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. Stranger Than Paradise
Notes: Ever since I have seen 'Dead Man' when it was released, I have always been a fan of Jim Jarmusch. To be honest, I didn't care much about his latest work but I still try to catch his movies when I get the chance. Anyway, even though his directing debut ‘Permanent Vacation’ was not entirely successful, this movie was a huge critical success at the time and it is usually considered as a huge influence on American independent cinema. Eventually, I think the whole thing is pretty much a matter of taste. Indeed, Jarmusch is definitely one of the very few real American authors like Woody Allen, Terrence Malick or Wes Anderson, and I have a lot of respect for his work. On top of that, the black and white cinematography was quite gorgeous. Still, I found it hard to really connect with the whole thing as it shows a deliberate slow pace, there is no real plot whatsoever and none of his characters were either likeable or really interesting. The fact is also that this movie was made 30 years ago and, at the time, it might have been ground-breaking but since then, I have seen tons of similar Artsy features so its impact is not as big as it used to be.
