(A review of
The Darwin Awards)
To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Winona Ryder, I thought I should check it out. By the way, what the hell happened to her?!? During the 90's, she was one of the most popular actresses at work but, suddenly, her career went downhill and she has been rather struggling ever since. Well, with such flicks, I can't say I'm really surprised... I mean, it was basically one of those quirky comedies with some rather excentric characters but the whole thing didn't work very well. I mean, there was an interesting cast (David Arquette, Josh Charles, Joseph Fiennes, Lukas Haas, Tom Hollander, Juliette Lewis, Julianna Margulies, Tim Blake Nelson, Alessandro Nivola, Chris Penn, Winona Ryder, Robin Tunney, Wilmer Valderrama) and the concept definitely had some potential. However, even though some scenes were quite funny, they tried too much to be quirky and the whole thing ended ย up being actually more annoying and stupid than anything else. It was the same thing with the main character, he was just a whining obnoxious guy and he actually got on my nerves throughout the whole thing. Anyway, to conclude, even thought the damned thing could have been a decent watch, it turned out to be a disappointing indie comedy and it is not really worth a look.

(A review of
The Road to Guantanamo)
Since I'm a huge fan of Michael Winterbottom, I was really eager to check this flick. First of all, I want to make something clear. This is not a documentary! It is based on actual events and they tried to portray those events as faithfully as possible but those men were actors with a script, not real people in real life situation. To call this movie a documentary, would be like saying that 'The Schindler's list', 'Not without my daughter' or '127 hours' were documentaries as well. I mean, the directing and acting style are highly reminiscent of a documentary and make the whole thing quite spellbinding to watch. Furthermore, even though nothing really surprising is displayed, it is still rather shocking and heartbreaking to behold. Another thing that bothered me a little was that the whole thing is highly biased and I think it would have been even more powerful if the makers didn't take side. Even better, imagine if the movie was dealing with actual terrorists, would they still deserve such a horrible treatment? Wouldn't we loose our humanity then if we let that happen? That would have made the movie even more interesting in my opinion. Still, it is a very strong and courageous statement to release such a movie amidst such an ugly war where Western countries are hiding behind fear and false excuses to basically torture people, guilty or not. It is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested by this subject.

(A review of
Departures)
According to Roger Ebert, this was one of the best movies coming out in 2009 and it won the Academy Award fot the best foreign movie so I was definitely curious about it. It had been a while since I watched a Japanese movie and within the first 10 minutes, I understood why I was always loved these movies. Indeed, the directing and acting was so understated and quite fascinating to behold and it is such a big difference with Western movies, especially American movies, which tends to explain every single thing happening on the screen, something which is in fact rather boring. Furthermore, this movie was about a very interesting ceremony dealing with the cleansing of dead bodies before they are cremated. It was something we obviously don't have in the Western culture and those proceedings were rather emotional and mesmerizing to watch. Still, even though I really liked this movie, it was still missing something to become really awesome. Maybe it was because there were some humorous bits during the first half which were rather superfluous or maybe it was because the characters were not really fascinating. Still, it was a very well made drama, it gave a very interesting view on Japanese culture and traditions and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Japanese movies.

(A review of
Dark Shadows)
I didn't really know what to expect from this flick before watching it. I mean, I have never seen the TV show it is based on and, frankly, even though I have seen every single movie directed by Tim Burton, it has been a while that he really did blow me away. Furthermore, the (terribly misleading) trailer gave me the feeling that it would be a straight comedy reminiscent of 'The Addams Familly' which wasn't really promising either. Fortunately, it turned out to be actually not bad at after all. Indeed, it was visually really neat, especially the introduction which was some kind of Gothic extravangaza and the tone was just perfect. Furthermore, I really enjoyed Johnny Depp who was quite hilarious and it has been a while since he gave such a solid performance. The rest of the cast was also pretty good but they didn't stand a chance against Depp, except maybe for Eva Green. Still, even though I enjoyed this movie, I was still missing something though. Indeed, there were a few misfires like the sex scene or the concert with Alice Cooper where the tone was gone and they went for the cheap jokes. Furthermore, the ending was rather disappointing as it was a rather boring and uninteresting final fight between the two major protagonists. Still, to conclude, even though it wasn't entirely satisfying, it was still a fairly enjoyable flick and it is worth a look, especially if you like Tim Burton's work.

(A review of
The X Files: Fight the Future)
First of all, I have to point out that I have never been a fan of this TV show. Back then, there was a huge hype around it but I kind of missed it. I mean, I did watch a few episodes but it never blew me away. In spite of this, I still wanted to check this flick, just to see how it would turn out in a feature length format. Unfortunately, the end result was rather disappointing, I'm afraid. Indeed, the whole thing felt like a long episode with a very convoluted plot. I know, the show was based on such far-fetched scenarios, maybe that's why I never really enjoyed it. I have read here and there that this movie was supposed to be rather accessible for people not familiar with the show but I really disagree on this. It was obviously made to please the fans as the story was linked to the previous seasons and the seasons coming after and there were tons of references which went above my head. The funny thing is that I found the 2nd movie much better than this one but this 'sequel' didn't have much to do with the X-files, expect for the title and of course, Mulder and Scully. To conclude, I don't think it is really worth a look, maybe only if you are a die-hard fan of this legendary show.

(A review of
The Last Kiss)
Even though I really have a weak spot for romantic movies, most of them are usually disappointing so I didn't expect much before watching this flick. Eventually, I was pleasantly surprised and I couldn't believe how intense the whole thing was sometimes. First of all, there was a nice cast and they all gave some decent performances. Above all, I really enjoyed how complex and conflicted those characters and their relationships were portrayed. Indeed, it was really refreshing and much more interesting that the stereotypes you usually get with this genre. Of course, it still followed the usual formula but they provided enough depth to make it interesting. Another issue was that there were probably too many characters and some of the sub-plots didn't work so well. Still, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this flick. One of the most daring choice they made was to make the main character played by Zach Braff such a complete dick. Of course, his feelings were understandable and he seemed to be a nice guy but come on,ย his girlfriend (Jacinda Barett) was pregnant but he still managed to go out with a young student (Rachel Bilson), kissed her, got back home, got busted by his girlfriend, went back to the student, had sex with her and the day after, he still came back to his girlfriend and asked her to get back together!ย I couldn't believe what I was seeing, it was pretty obvious that he was done with his girlfriend and that he just wanted to have a quick f*ck with the student but they still tried to force them back together at the end, following the tired formula I mentioned before and it didn't really work in my opinion. Still, even though the whole thing was flawed, it was actually one of the best romantic dramas I have seen for a very long time and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
Far from Heaven (2002))
I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I have it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. To be honest, the first time around, I found it really difficult to judge this movie. Indeed, before watching this, I only heard tremendous things about it (according to Roger Ebert, it was one of the best movies coming out in 2002), so I had some huge expectations. Unfortunately, I was then a little bit disappointed. I mean, I was not really familiar with Todd Haynes' work back then (it was the first movie he has directed that I saw) but I must admit it was really well directed with some terrific set design and costumes. Furthermore, there was a top-notch cast (Julianne Moore, Dennis Quaid, Dennis Haysbert, Patricia Clarkson, Viola Davis) and they all gave some really solid performances. The only issue I had was that the story didn't really blow me away. I mean, it was interesting, that's for sure, but still not quite fascinating. I don't know, maybe I was a little bit annoyed by the fact that, somehow, it seems rather easy to make such a movie 50 years later and I thought it was rather arrogant to show how messed up those characters were compared to how much more 'evolved' we have become. It may have had a huge impact if it would have been released 50 or 60 years ago but what was the revelance in our modern world? However, after rewatching the damned thing, I was actually much more able to appreciate it though. Basically, it is a good reminder that not everything used to be better in the past, as some people seems to believe and I was more touched by what the characters were going though this time around. Furthermore, I was finally able to see the brilliance of making a traditional 50's melodrama but dealing with homosexuality and interracial romances. Anyway, to conclude, it is a very good flick after all and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
The Frighteners)
Before becoming a big shot in Hollywood, before 'The Lord of the Rings', Peter Jackson made this flick which was ultimately a flop. If I remember it correctly, I even saw this movie when it came out in the movie theater and I did enjoy it back then. So, I rewatched it yesterday with my step-son and I must say, it still holds up pretty well in my opinion. Before 'LOTR', Peter Jackson used to make some really wacky comedies and, even though this movie was oriented towards the mainstream audience, he still retained the same dark humor and it was much appreciated. Furthermore, if for Peter Jackson, it was his last movie before reaching the VIP section in Hollywood, on the other hand, for Michael J. Fox, it was his swan song since it would be his last leading part. Anyway, for this movie, Fox played his usual character but he didn't bother me and I thought he did a decent job. Basically, it is a rather standard ghost story reminiscent of 'Ghostbusters' but it was pretty funny and entertaining. I remember it, back then, I was quite blown away by the special effects and, 16 years later, they still looked pretty awesome (no wonder as it was done by Weta Digital, the same guys from 'The Lord of the Rings' which became one of the most highly regarded special effects team in the world). To conclude, it is pretty much forgotten nowadays but it is actually pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Peter Jackson's work.

(A review of
Buffet Froid )
Bertrand Blier is not really famous here on Listal but he is actually one of the best French directors, at least, he is among my favorites. It is must be one of his weirdest movies and it is basically one of those surrealist comedies like 'After Hours' by Scorsese. Usually, I'm not really a fan of this genre but I really liked this one. Indeed, there is a really good cast (Gรฉrard Depardieu, Jean Carmet, Bernard Blier (the director's father), Carole Bouquet, Michel Serrault) and they all gave some very good performances. I especially enjoyed Depardieu who was just awesome here. He keeps meeting some weird characters throughout the night and the whole thing was just really fun to watch but also not completely stupid like most of the American comedies you get to watch nowadays. To conclude, it is a very good comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

(A review of
The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle)
I'm a huge fan of Robert De Niro and I would watch anything starring this guy. However, for the last 10 or even 20 years, he hasn't done anything great whatsoever and, as a matter of fact, showed up in a lot of garbage. This flick must be the worst he has made so far. I haven't seen the original cartoon and, honestly, I couldn't care less... The animation was ugly, the characters were tedious and the story was just boring to death. I don't blame De Niro for showing up in a familly feature, why not? But I do blame him for chosing such a terrible flick... Some years ago, Robert Zemeckis demonstrated with 'Roger Rabbit' that it was possible to make a familly feature combining animation and live action in a lovely way with a storyline which was compelling for the kids but also for the grown-ups. This flick is just the opposite... Like I said before, it is just ugly and completely boring. It is possible that young children would enjoy this but why shouldn't you show them something really awesome instead of this piece of turd?!? To conclude, it is a waste of time, it is not worth a look whatsoever, even if you are a die-hard fan of Robert De Niro like me.
