An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 14 April 2012 08:28 (A review of Simpatico)

Even though the ratings for this movie were really low, since there was a really nice cast involved (Nick Nolte, Jeff Bridges, Sharon Stone, Catherine Keener, Albert Finney), I was really eager to check it out. Well, the beginning was actually rather promising with a nice film noir mood and an impressive confrontation between Nolte and Bridges but, unfortunately, the whole thing didn't hold up after all. Above all, the story was just really poorly written. I mean, Nick Nolte was a messed up guy looking for some kind of redemption, Jeff Bridges started out as a ruthless businessman but suddenly, the guy had a melt-down and all his decisions became really hard to follow, Albert Finney didn't have one single line of genuine dialogue during the whole thing and spoke only in cryptic riddles, Sharon Stone played an alcoholic and Catherine Keener tried very hard but ultimately she portrayed one of the most clueless and annoying characters I have seen for a long time. So, the characters were not really convincing or interesting and the story was rather weak as well with no real climax at the end. It's too bad since they seemed to have all the ingredients to make a terrific movie. Anyway, to conclude, I think my rating is actually really generous, it was a rather disappointing flick and I don’t think it is really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 13 April 2012 07:59 (A review of The Order)

Like everyone else, I think that Heath Ledger was a very talented actor but, honestly, not everything he did was completely awesome. For example, this was probably the worst movie he made during his short career. Indeed, three years after 'A Knight's Tale', he worked again with Brian Helgeland and Shannyn Sossamon but, this time, the end-result was pretty underwhelming and barely no one saw this flick when it was released. Basically, it is a thriller with some religio and paranormal elements. Honestly, it is not completely awful and remains watchable above all thanks to Heath Ledger who delivers a decent performance and remains really charismatic as usual. Of course, the whole thing is just preposterous but that wasn't an issue, no the issue was more that it was not really entertaining at all. I mean, I think the plot had some potential but it was so generic and rather boring to watch. To conclude, like I said before it is the most disappointing movie starring Ledger and it is not really worth a look, even if you are a fan of his work.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 12 April 2012 10:07 (A review of The Statement)

Since I'm a big fan of Michael Caine, I really had to check this movie. For once, he had the lead part so it was just a real treat. Furthermore, it was also the last movie directed by Norman Jewison so I was really intrigued by this flick. Basically, it is a rather unknown spy flick but, franky, when I see the low ratings, I really think it is completely underrated. Indeed, Caine was once again terrific and the rest of the cast was pretty good as well (Tilda Swinton, Jeremy Northam, Alan Bates, Charlotte Rampling, John Neville, Ciarán Hinds). I also thought it was quite interesting to see a spy flick dealing with some old people from WWII, instead of young athletic people like in the Bourne trilogy. I thought it added another dimension, another element to the suspense genre and it was a refreshing approach. Still, it remains a generic spy story with nothing really mindblowing but I remained entertained throughout the whole thing. To conclude, I really liked this movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Michael Caine's work.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 12 April 2012 05:21 (A review of Whip It)

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this movie, I was really eager to watch the damned thing. First of all, Drew Barrymore had some major ups and downs during her career as an actress but you can say whatever you want, she delivered a really neat directing debut. Above all, I really liked how she managed to mix teenage anxiety with a sport flick. Of course, the whole thing was still rather stereotypical and predictable but it was still well made and entertaining. First of all, you had a really strong female cast (Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Zoe Bell, Eve, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis) and they all delivered some solid performances. Still, Ellen Page can’t seem to move on from Juno as she keeps playing over and over again some similar characters and I hope for her she will be able to do something else in the future. Anyway, this derby roller thing (which I had never seen before) was pretty fun to watch. Above all, I really enjoyed the directing and most of the dialogues were quite hilarious. To conclude, even if the core of this movie was not original,  the execution was really good, I really liked the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 11 April 2012 09:07 (A review of The Young Americans)

Wow... I was the first person to rate this movie and, right now, only 5 users have rated it so it is definitely an obscure flick. Anyway, Harvey Keitel got many ups and downs in his career and it is above all thanks to Tarantino that he made a come-back in the 90's. He starred in this flick a year before 'Pulp Fiction' with another unknown star back then, Viggo Mortensen. I thought it was a decent cop drama and I was entertained throughout the whole thing but unfortunately, the plot was pretty generic, I'm afraid. I must say, it was also rather weird to have 2 American actors playing the lead when the story was actually taking place in England but it didn't bother me too much. Still, I just love those actors and it was rather fun to watch them in such an unknown feature. To conclude, it is nothing really amazing whatsoever, but it remains a decent movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you have a weak spot for Harvey Keitel and Viggo Mortensen.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 11 April 2012 08:36 (A review of The Box)

Like many other viewers, I was quite blown away by 'Donnie Darko' which was definitely one of the most impressive directing debuts ever. As a result, we all had some high hopes concerning Richard Kelly but, more than 15 years later, we are still waiting for something else great coming  from this director.... Anyway, 3 years after the huge failure of ‘Southland Tales’, it seems that Kelly decided to scale down and he delivered something much less ambitious than his 2 first movies. I mean, it was still another mindf*ck and it did remind me of David Lynch's work with a little bit of 'Lost' and a lot of 'Twilight Zone' in it (as a matter of fact, this movie had been inspired by a 'Twilight Zone' episode). To be honest, even though the directing was not bad and Cameron Diaz and James Marsden did what they could and provided some decent performances, the whole thing was still too preposterous for me. I mean, the whole button thing ('should they press it or not?') was already intriguing enough but they kept adding some weird stuff every 5 minutes and I kind of lost interest after a while. Still, even though it was flawed, the whole thing was still fairly entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 10 April 2012 07:33 (A review of The Wedding Planner)

Sometime ago, Jennifer Lopez used to have a pretty successful movie career and this movie was her last box-office success. After this, all her movies tanked miserably and she is not really what you would consider a bankable actress anymore. Still, it doesn't mean that this movie was actually any good. Basically, even if Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey have some good chemistry, it remains a very generic, predictable and boring romantic-comedy. I also realized that it was the first time in his career that McConaughey tried this genre and afterwards many average and disappointing similar flicks would follow ('How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days', 'Failure to Launch', 'Fool's Gold', 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past',...). However, right now, it seems that he is making a really unexpected but welcome come-back with a serie of critically acclaimed flicks ('Dallas Buyers Club', 'The Wolf of Wall Street', 'Magic Mike',
'Mud', 'The Paperboy', 'Killer Joe', 'Bernie', 'The Lincoln Lawyer"). Coming back to our main subject, I think that back then Lopez was really in the spotlights and that would explain that people went to see this. Anyway, even though I have a weak spot for the genre, it remains a really average and predictable romantic-comedy and it is not really worth a look, in my opinion.

A very good movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 9 April 2012 08:38 (A review of The Lower Depths)

For the last 30 years, the most illustrious French actor must have been Gérard Depardieu. Before him, also for at least 30 years, the title was probably held by Jean Gabin. Here, he worked again with Jean Renoir. Together, they made 'La Grande Illusion' which became one of the greatest classics in motion picture history (I have seen again this classic not so long ago and it was even better than I thought, a real masterpiece). I didn’t notice before but this movie was actually an adaptation of a play written by Gorky. Anyway, they made this movie a year before 'La Grande Illusion' and even though it may not have reached the same status, it is still a very good movie. Indeed, the directing is real marvel, a combination of realism and lyricism. On the other hand, Jean Gabin was probably at the time at the height of his Art back and delivers an impressive performance. To be honest, I must admit that the whole thing was rather depressing to watch but I didn't bother me whatsoever. To conclude, it is a very good movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 9 April 2012 08:11 (A review of The Omen)

For some weird reasons, I was quite eager watch this movie. Indeed, this movie was actually released on June 6th 2006 (6/6/6) and my daughter was actually born the day after. At least, it seemed that there was an interesting cast involved (Liev Schreiber, Julia Stiles, David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, Mia Farrow, Michael Gambon). Still, they made some huge mistakes in this area. Indeed, couldn't they pick someone else more believable to play the mother? Back then, Julia Stiles wasn't even 25 years old and she looked even younger, 22 at most. Apparently, some other actresses such as Rachel Weisz, Laura Linney or Hope Davis were considered and it would have worked better with them. The other casting mistake was with the young boy. Seriously, it was one of the weakest child performances I have seen for a while. On the bright side, I must say that the rest of the cast was decent, especially Liev Schreiber. Indeed, Schreiber is a fine actor, one of the most underrated at work nowadays and he really deserved a better movie than this. Indeed, the story was really preposterous and I was sometimes laughing at what was happening on the screen. I mean, other movies such as 'The Shining' managed to deal with paranormal phenomenoms without getting so ridiculous. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was not really awful, it was still a weak horror movie and it is not really worth a look, even if you are a fan of this genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 8 months ago on 8 April 2012 01:19 (A review of Last Hero in China (Deadly China Hero))

The main reason I watched this flick is because I got this movie for free when I bought another movie so I thought I should check it out. Furthermore, I have seen most of the American productions starring Jet Li but I hadn't seen any of his Hong-Kong features so that was a good opportunity. First of all, of course, the fights were pretty awesome and really entertaining. Unfortunately, the humor was pretty bad... I guess it is an acquired taste but compared to the fights, it was rather a downfall. Furthermore, the story was not bad but it was still pretty generic, I'm afraid. To be honest, I was a little bit disappointed. Indeed, Jet Li has made many of those 'Wong Fei-hung' features and I thought it would be better than this. However, it seems that this flick was not an official sequel but should be actually considered as a spin-off or even a parody explaining maybe why the whole thing was rather underwhelming. Still, to conclude, even though it's probably not the best Hong-Kong production starring Jet Li, it is still pretty entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
