A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 12 months ago on 13 June 2012 08:50 (A review of Agora)

I was quite blown away by 'Mar adentro' which was basically the best Spanish movie I have ever seen so I was really eager to watch Alejandro Amenabar’s following directing effort. I was rather amazed that this movie was barely seen and quickly forgotten. Indeed, it might not have been Amenabar's best movie so far but I thought it was still pretty good. Basically, it was dealing with philosophy, science, religion and love and most of it was actually quite spellbinding. The main issue was that it was probably too ambitious and all those ideas were not really well developed after all. For example, there were not one but two romances around Hypatia but I understand why they added those. Indeed, it was to add some human dimension to these grand scale events but those romances were more annoying than anything else eventually. Furthermore, the movie was fairly anti-Christian since the Christians were portrayed as merciless bullies. Of course, they destroyed some invaluable books and artifacts in the past but so did the Muslims, the Jews, the Pagans or any other religion. Eventually, the message was really striking but the execution was rather heavy-handed. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still an intelligent film, something rare nowadays, and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Religion.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 12 months ago on 12 June 2012 12:23 (A review of The Forgotten)

It might sound weird but before watching a movie, I don't read what it's about. When you do read the story, sometimes you loose the first 30 minutes because you already know what is going to happen. I'd rather discover the events together with the characters and I think it is a much more rewarding watching experience. So, before watching this flick, I didn't have a clue what it was about and the beginning was quite fascinating. Indeed, did Julianne Moore's character really have a kid or is she just really crazy ? So, I thought it could be a deep and fascinating character study going all psychological but, unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. Within 20 minutes, it is revealed that her son has been adducted by Aliens and the rest of the movie is just a succession of endless and boring action scenes... I thought it was so frustrating... I mean, they have a perfectly fine premise (a woman who desperatly wants a child, gets a miscarriage and makes him up) but, instead, they completely ruined it. Julianne Moore shouldn't be blamed, she does her best with the character but she won't be remembered for this movie, that's for sure. To conclude, it is a really average thriller and it is not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 12 months ago on 12 June 2012 11:54 (A review of Birthday Girl)

Before watching this flick, I had never heard of it before so I wasn't sure what I should expect. First of all, even though the actors were all pretty good and delivered some solid performances, it was still some rather weird piece of casting, if you ask me. I mean, 3 of the main characters are supposed to be Russian but, in fact, they are Australian (Nicole Kidman) and French (Vincent Cassel and Mathieu Kassovitz). Why?!? In my opinion, it was the major issue with this movie but a part from that, it was pretty enjoyable. Indeed, I liked the whole concept of this guy ordering a new wife from Russia but the whole thing eventually blows up in this face and all the actors involved were pretty good, even if they weren't even Russian. It was also rather funny to see Ben Chaplin again. What happened to this guy actually??! I remember seeing him in a few flicks during the 90's but since then, he seems to have vanished... Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it remains a rather entertaining crime comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 12 months ago on 12 June 2012 11:22 (A review of Monsieur Batignole)

Gérard Jugnot is not really famous abroad but he is really famous in France, first of all as a comedic actor. He has also built up a decent career as a director and, if I'm not mistaken, this flick was his most successful, financially speaking. Basically, it is one of those typical French WWII movie where the French people are depicted as heros and resistants when, in reality, only a marginal amount of the population was involved in the resistance or any other activities against the Nazis. However, the French people really like to focus on their heroes but I always find it rather annoying as they tend to forget all the terrible things the French people did back then. Furthermore, they picked up a really nice Jewish boy and Mr Batignolle starts as cold-hearted b*st*rd but then slowly becomes a hero.... So, it is definitely nothing really original and rather stereotypical but it remains a well made drama and Gérard Jugnot who not only directed the movie but gave himself the lead, was pretty good as well. Anyway, to conclude, it is an unoriginal but still fairly decent WWII drama and it is worth a look, especially if you like French movies.

[Link removed - login to see]To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Dwayne Johnson, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it is not very often that you see a major action star like Dwayne Johnson starring in a drama and, quite surprisingly, I actually enjoyed the damned thing. I mean, sure, the introduction was rather messy but then they displayed the life of the youth in this kind of neighboorhood and how merciless and hopeless their life can turn out to be. So, when they all got involved in this (US) football thing, I was really believing that they were willing to do something else than shooting at each other. They managed to show us that those kids never have had any opportunity, except selling drugs, and, here, they finally got to do something else and it worked. Of course, the whole thing was still rather stereotypical, you wonder if they could become friends so quickly and some of those kids behaved completely different from one moment to another but it was inherent to the genre. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing mind-blowing, I thought it was actually a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Even though I'm not a big fan of Barbra Streisand, since she won the Oscar for the Best actress for this movie, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, when you think about it, could you imagine Christina Aguilera winning an Oscar for 'Burlesque', Britney Spears for 'Crossroads' or Mariah Carey with 'Glitter'? It seems that, nowadays, we shouldn't have huge expectations towards such movies. even though, Jennifer Hudson did manage to win the Oscar for 'Dreamgirls'. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I thought it was not bad. Indeed, the songs were pretty good and I have to admit that Barbra Streisand did deliver a solid performance. Unfortunately, like most musicals, the story turned out to be nothing mind-blowing. Furthermore, it was also rather long (around 140 minutes) and the whole thing was rather slow so I got rather bored at some point. Of course, since I'm not a fan of Barbra Streisand and since I'm not a fan of musicals either, I was not really the targeted audience and that could explain why I didn't like it very much. Anyway, to conclude, I still it was a well made musical and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 10 June 2012 04:20 (A review of Iron Man)

I already saw this movie (in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released) but since I have now Disney+, I thought I might as well rewatch the whole MCU. First of all, nowadays, nobody would argue that Robert Downey Jr. was not the right guy to portray Tony Stark. However, many have forgotten that, because of his everlasting drug problem, Downey Jr. was blacklisted for many years and it was at the time really a big gamble from Jon Favreau. Fortunately, this gamble paid off and this flick was a critical and financial success. It was the living proof that a comic-book adaptation didn't need to be gloomy like 'The Dark Knight' to be good. Indeed, it was easily one of the most fun super-hero flick I have ever seen. So, obviously, Robert Downey Jr. completely stole the show with a pitch perfect performance but the rest of the cast was also pretty good (Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Jon Favreau). And, of course, the special effects were quite awesome but with such a huge budget, that was rather expected. But there was also a good pace and, even though there were plenty of special effects shots, they still managed to develop enough the characters and, as a result, the story was quite compelling to watch. My only critic would be that the story was still too predictable and generic which prevented the whole thing from becoming a real masterpiece. Anyway, to conclude, even if it might not be an actual masterpiece, it is still one of the best super-hero movies out there, even after all these years and after all these movies released within the MCU, and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 10 June 2012 03:07 (A review of Bobby Z)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection of movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and it was indeed was pretty average. Basicallly, it was one of those straight-to-dvd flicks with poor acting, directing and storyline. I was above all rather amazed by Paul Walker who played the lead here. I mean, I have to admit it, the guy had the looks but, man, as a actor, he was rather clueless and this flick was a good example. The fact that the whole thing was ratheer poorly written didn't help. For example, the character portrayed was supposed to be some kind of loser but then, out of the blue, he was riding a bike, a horse, taking down about 20 henchmen with his bare hands and he also became some kind of sharp shooter. However, even though the whole thing was pretty average, it was not one of the worst movies I have seen, and I do think that the story actually had some potential. Still, it is pretty average and not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 10 June 2012 01:45 (A review of Piranha 3D)

Before watching this flick, I wasn't expecting much but, at least, I thought it would be a fun watch. First of all, I have to give some credit to Alexandre Aja. Indeed, I heard about the damned thing and I thought there would be loads of boobs and gore but they really went all the way, with lots of nudity and some nasty gore scenes. Still, even though my step-son apparently really loved it, I can't say I really cared for this movie though. Indeed, I was eventually rather bored during the whole thing and, as far as I was concerned, it was never really funny or scary. To make things worse. I didn't care about any of the characters so it was rather difficult to get into the story. Of course, I know, I shouldn't take this movie seriously but, still, if you compare it to 'Jaws, it was rather weak. Like I said before, my step-son who is 15 years old really enjoyed it and I'm maybe too old to appreciate a movie with naked chicks and blood-thirsty fishes. I have nothing against these things but I still need a compelling story and some more or less interesting characters. Anyway, to conclude, it was rather boring and it is not really worth a look in my opinion.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 7 June 2012 09:31 (A review of Titus)

Since I consider Anthony Hopkins one of the best actors alive, I was really eager to watch this flick. It is also Julie Taymor's directing debut which made this movie even more intriguing to me. Eventually, it turned out to be one of the weirdest and least accessible Shakespeare adaptation I have ever seen and, yet, somehow, I did like it. It is always tricky when the makers decide to keep the original dialogs and, usually, it doesn't work for me but, this time, I thought it was quite fascinating. Like many people have pointed out, if you haven't read the text (I didn't either), the whole thing is pretty hard to follow and that's why I wasn't quite completely blown away. But, I liked it, thanks to the directing, the baroque costums and set-dressing and the awazing cast (Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Alan Cumming). It was above all a treat to see Hopkins who doesn't get to play the lead very often nowadays, such a shame. If you don't understand the words, it doesn't really matter since his body language is enough to tell you the whole thing. To conclude, it is obviously an acquired taste but it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
