An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 30 May 2012 09:00 (A review of Death Sentence)

After booking some major success with 'Saw', it took about 3 years for James Wan to follow up with another flick and I was really intrigued about the damned thing. Eventually, it turned out to be a rather standard vigilante movie and, not surprisingly, an adaptation of the book called 'Death Sentence' which was a sequel to the book called 'Death Wish' which was adapted in the most famous vigilante movie ever made starring Charles Bronson. However, it seems that these movies didn't have much to do with the books, except that they were dealing with an average guy deciding to avenge his family. Anyway, I thought the whole thing was rather well made, very violent, with some decent performances by Kevin Bacon, Garrett Hedlund and John Goodman. The main issue I had was that the movie never really knew where it should stand. I mean, from time to time, they would give us some family drama scenes explaining how violence is wrong and all, but then before and after that, they would give some adrenaline fuelled scene with some catchy songs when the main character goes completely badass killing a whole bunch of bad guys. So, I though it was rather uneven and sometimes, actually rather depressing to watch. Still, it was a well made and entertaining flick and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

I would watch anything starring Anthony Hopkins and he is the main reason why I wanted to check this flick. On the other hand, I wasn't really excited by Cuba Gooding Jr . Indeed, he started out as a promising young actor, became an Academy award winner but then spent a good chunk of the last 10 years ruining his career. Eventually, it turned out to be a rather disappointing flick which maybe was not as bad as the usual movies starring Cuba Gooding Jr. but unfortunately, it was also far from being as good as the usual movies starring Anthony Hopkins. I mean, Hopkins gave a solid performance but Gooding was not really convincing as a pyschiatrist and, above all, I thought it was just a preposterous thriller going for the cheap thrills. There is nothing more annoying than a movie which tries to sound intelligent but actually doesn't give a damned about being accurate and just tries to entertain with some dumb action stuff and thriller elements. To conclude, even though the original concept was actually interesting, it remains an average and disappointing flick and it is not really worth a look, even if you are interested in Hopkins' work.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 28 May 2012 09:03 (A review of Men in Black 3)

What a nice surprise! At first, I was really wondering what the hell was Will Smith thinking... Indeed, he wasn’t involved in any movie for the last 3 years and he seemed to be linked to at least 20 different projects and the one gig he picked up was a sequel for a 10 years old franchise that nobody was actually expecting. Fortunately, the end result turned out to be actually pretty good. At first, they gave us a slow (and rather boring) introduction during which Smith argued all the time with Tommy Lee Jones but, if it was funny with the first movie, it had become rather annoying for the 3rd time around. But fortunately, Jones disappeared pretty quickly and then the movie finally started to get interesting. Indeed, first, you had a really spectacular jump from the Empire State Building (I saw it in IMAX 3D and it was pretty awesome). And then, J met the younger version of K, portrayed by Josh Brolin who just blew me away. Not only he physically really looked like a younger Jones, but he sounded just the same. From this point, I was just sold and enjoyed the whole time travel paradox. Of course, the rest of the movie was just made of preposterous action scenes and of some weird looking aliens but it was fun and I had a good time. To conclude, even though it was nothing amazing, it was still an enjoyable blockbuster, it displayed that Will Smith still rules the box-office and it is definitely worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 28 May 2012 08:12 (A review of Witness)

Back in the 80's, Harrison Ford completely ruled and literally all his movies were either huge financial success and/or critically acclaimed (as a matter of fact, between 1980 and 1983, 4 years in a row, a movie starring Harrison Ford was voted best movie of the year in Imdb!) So, with this in mind, I thought it would be a good idea to re-watch this flick which was a big success back then allowing Ford to get his first and only academy award acting nomination. And, indeed, he gave a very good performance, just like Kelly McGillis. Furthermore, the directing by Peter Weir was quite mesmerizing, giving an interesting look on the Amish community which he actually knew nothing about before filming. However, even though I really enjoyed it, I can't say I was really blown away. Indeed, you have basically 3 storylines (a thriller, a love story and an examination of the clash between our modern world and the Amish culture) and, even though according to Roger Ebert, all three elements worked together well, I have to disagree with him. Indeed, I thought the whole thriller thing was entertaining but was just used as an excuse to find a reason to put Harrison Ford in the Amish community. Still, it is a very well made flick, really entertaining and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you have a weak spot for Harrison Ford like I do.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 28 May 2012 07:50 (A review of Lorna's Silence)

Since I'm a huge fan of the Dardennes brothers, I really had to watch this flick. Once again, they were dealing with some realistic characters who were involved in some rather bleak and sordid business. The directing followed their usual style by giving a lot of space to the actors, with no musical background, except for the very last shot. As a result, the whole thing was quite spellbinding to watch with some tremendous performances, above all by Jérémie Renier who was pretty amazing as a junkie. However, to be honest, I thought it was a rather surprising that they did win the award for the best screenplay at the Cannes film festival since the writing was actually the weakest point in this flick. Indeed, there was not much continuity in Lorna's character when in the fact continuity has always been a trademark of the Dardennes brothers. Basically, even though their characters go through the most excruating events, they usually remain the same no matter how good or evil they started but it wasn’t the case with Lorna. As a result, I wasn’t really convinced by her actions which felt seriously plot-driven. Furthermore, the story did lack some focus (for example, what was this all about with the pregnancy stuff?!?). Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 28 May 2012 07:24 (A review of One Missed Call)

To be honest, since this movie was yet another remake of a Japanese horror movie and since it had received such low ratings, I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing but since it was starring Shannyn Sossamon and Edward Burns, I thought I might as well give it a shot. Eventually, even though it was indeed rather weak, it was actually not so bad after all. Basically, it was some kind of combination of 'The Ring' which I love (The Japanese version) and 'Final Destination' which was not bad. Honestly, I'm not sure if I did really understand the whole cellphone thing but it didn't matter very much. Eventually, the directing and acting were average and the special effects were pretty shabby but it remained watchable with a (very) few scary moments. By the way, what the hell happened to Edward Burns?!? 20 years ago, he seemed to be a talented actor with a lot of potential but he keeps showing up in the most average flicks and I can't remember the last time I watched a good movie with this guy. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen worse, it was still a weak horror remake and it is not really worth a look, even if you like the genre.

A bad movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 28 May 2012 02:49 (A review of The Flintstones)

As we all know, instead of taking some risk and producing a new idea, the Hollywood film makers would rather make a sequel, a prequel or an adaptation of any known book, tv-shows,... We even get board games adaptation nowadays ('Battleship')! Anyway, this time we get an adaptation of a really famous cartoon and the end result was, I'm afraid, pretty horrendous. Visually, it was not that bad and there was a decent cast (John Goodman, Elizabeth Perkins, Rick Moranis, Rosie O'Donnell, Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry, Elizabeth Taylor) but the whole thing was just really terrible. Indeed, the story was just stupid and it just didn't work in this format. I mean, in a cartoon, this kind of humor is ok (I'm not a huge fan either) but in a live-action format, it just doesn't work at all. Anyway, it doesn't really matter as even though it was destroyed by the critics, it was pretty successful at the box-office just because it comes from a famous brand so the Hollywood producers still managed to reach their goal. To conclude, it is pretty bad and it is not worth a look whatsoever, even if you are a die-hard fan of the cartoon.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 27 May 2012 07:15 (A review of Blue Chips)

When I was a kid, I used to be obsessed with the NBA (even though you couldn't see any matches in France...). So, when I heard there was a movie coming out starring Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway and many other famous players, I really had to see it so I went with my buddies to the theater. Unfortunately, we didn't like it at all. I mean, back then, I was around 14 years old and wanted to see a fun and cool flick with some awesome baskteball scenes but what I got was a very serious thriller with barely any basketball at all. Back then, even though I already loved movies, I didn't know who were Nick Nolte and William Friedkin and I thought the whole thing was rather misleading. Even nowadays when you check the poster, it doesn't represent the movie at all. Maybe I will re-watch it some day to make up my mind for good, who knows. To conclude, you shouldn't watch it for the basketball stars because it is not what the movie is about, what remains is an average thriller which is not really worth a look, I'm afraid.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 26 May 2012 08:14 (A review of Fracture)

I already saw this movie but since it was a while back, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I was surprised when I was reading my first review for this movie to discover that, apparently, I was at the time disappointed by the damned thing. I guess because Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Golsing were in the same movie together, against each other, I thought it should have been awesome or at least much better than what they delivered here. It’s a pity Roger Ebert didn’t write a review for this movie because I was really wondering what he would have thought about it. Anyway, after all, after a rewatch, I thought it was actually a fairly decent thriller with two great actors involved. I also enjoyed the minimalist approach and the fact that, even if someone is obviously guilty, without some evidence, they could still walk away. However, the simplicity of its story was also the main problem though. Indeed, basically, the whole case relied too much only on a missing gun which was after all pretty thin, narratively speaking. On top of that, I figured out the switching gimmick pretty much right away. I mean, it was fairy logical. Ted Crawford apparently didn’t have the gun, his wife certainly didn’t have this gun either so there was only one person left who did enter the house between the moment Crawford did commit the crime and was taken into custody. In the meantime, you get to see Ryan Gosling running around aimlessly and you think he will crack this case somehow, without this damned gun but, actually, he doesn’t find anything else which was rather disappointing, especially since he was supposed to be a brilliant prosecutor. Eventually, you also wonder what was the point of his relationship with Rosamund Pike who, by the way, did a lot with a barely developed character but the whole romantic angle was just a filler. At least, Hopkins and Gosling did deliver some solid performances and the directing was  decent. Anyway, to conclude, it is actually not a bad thriller and, just to see these top actors at work together, it is worth a look, but there is no doubt that it could have been much better though.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years ago on 26 May 2012 07:26 (A review of From Paris with Love)

Even though I did like 'Taken', I still think it was rather overrated. Still, I was rather curious to see Pierre Morel's following directing effort, even though, this time, his new flick didn't get the same positive reception. Well, to my surprise, I actually really enjoyed this movie, at least the 1st hour. I mean, the plot was rather pedestrian and even though the action scenes were decent, it was nothing I haven't seen 100 times before. In fact, the one thing I really enjoyed was Charlie Wax. Indeed, JohnTravolta was already pretty bad-ass in his previous movie ('The Taking of Pelham 123') but, here, he definitely took it to the next level. Seriously, the guy kicked some serious ass and he made me laugh so many times. Unfortunately, during the last 30 minutes, the whole thing lost some steam and it was pretty obvious that the makers got lazy as the ending was just a succession of endless and boring action scenes and some sentimental crap. It was too bad because, before that, it was a really entertaining action flick with Travolta completely stealing the show with some awesome one-liners. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing really amazing, it was still a fun action flick, much better than I expected it to be, and it is definitely worth a look.
