Four Christmases)
When was the last time we saw a good movie starring Vince Vaughn ? Seriously, this movie was already his second Christmas feature and, even though it was not as bad as 'Fred Claus', it was still pretty damned average. In fact, Vaughn himself was actually not so bad and Reese Witherspoon was charming as usual but neither of them was actually funny and since I was watching a comedy, it was definitely a big issue. Furthermore, there was a really neat supporting cast (Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Jon Voight, Jon Favreau, Mary Steenburgen, Dwight Yoakam, Tim McGraw, Kristin Chenoweth,…) but they all played some tedious characters so the whole thing felt like a big waste of talented actors. I have to admit it, there were a few good scenes here and there and I did laugh a couple of times but there were also so many bad jokes, those jokes were even mean sometimes and it made the whole thing rather painfull to watch. Above all, the plot was just really generic and predictable. To conclude, even though it wasn’t the worse movie starring Vince Vaughn I have seen, it was still pretty weak though and it is not really worth a look whatsoever, even if you are desperate to watch a Christmas flick.

Beverly Hills Cop III)
To be honest, I have never been a fan of this franchise. Actually, I didn´t even really like the first one which is considered a classic. I mean, I thought it was not bad but still nothing mind-blowing whatsoever. As a matter of fact, my favorite would be actually the action packed sequel directed by Tony Scott. Anyway, seven years later, of course, they decided to make it a trilogy and, for the occasion, they reunited Eddie Murphy with John Landis. Indeed, back in the 80´s, they made together ´Trading places´ which is one of the few classics starring Eddie Murphy that I really enjoyed. Anyway, Murphy and Landis were back together but I´m afraid the end-result was more than disappointing. Indeed, John Landis is quite awesome with comedy but action-comedy is a rather different style which he obviously doesn´t really manage. Furthermore, the plot was just so generic and, honestly, I was bored to death by the whole thing. In my opinion, the whole concept of the Beverly Hills cop was rather weak from the start and with this 3rd flick, it was even more obvious. To conclude, even though it is not the worse movie starring Eddie Murphy (it doesn´t say much, I know...), it is still a worthless sequel and it is not worth a look whatsover.

Daylight )
Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Sylvester Stallone, I thought I should give it a try. Back then, at the end of the 90's, Stallone's career was not doing so well and, indeed, most of his movies were pretty average and usually flopped at the box-office. So, considering this, I had some rather low expectations before watching this flick. Eventually, I must say I was actually pleasantly surprised. I mean, it is not a masterpiece or anything like this but it is in fact easily one of the most entertaining movies starring Stallone I have seen for many years. First of all, there was a decent cast (Sylvester Stallone, Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Dan Hedaya) and even Stallone managed to give a decent performance. On top of that, the actions were pretty spectacular and, for once, the whole thing was not completely preposterous. So, against all expectations, you had here a decent plot, some cool actions scenes and some convincing actors. To conclude, it is a rather unknown and underrated action flick but I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Sylvester Stallone's work.

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection of movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example. To be honest, I didn't expect much from the damned thing and, indeed, it was one of those quirky indie romantic comedies with a ridiculous premise (this time, the big idea was that, if they don't fall in love within 28 days, they will kill themselves…). On the positive side, I must say that Eric Schaeffer was not bad at all and his character was the only thing I actually enjoyed, even though his obsession with his neighbour was rather annoying and ridiculous. Sarah Jessica Parker, before becoming Carrie Bradshaw for ever, was not bad actually but I couldn't stand her character who was so obnoxious and condescending. You also had Ben Stiller showing up in one of his clueless characters but I never thought his gimmick was really funny whatsoever. To conclude, the whole thing was pretty weak and without Schaeffer, I would have given it an even lower rating. Anyway, it is not really worth a look.

Æon Flux)
Even though I heard only bad things about this flick, since I have weak spot for Charlize Theron, I still wanted to check it out. First of all, following her Oscar winning turn in 'Monster', Charlize Theron chose to do something completely different and she should be praised for that. And indeed, this flick really had some potential. There was a great cast (Charlize Theron , Jonny Lee Miller, Sophie Okonedo, Frances McDormand, Pete Postlethwaite) and they managed to create a rather fascinating world but still, the whole thing didn't work. The biggest issue was that the plot was so generic and disposable, it made the whole thing rather boring to watch. I think their big mistake was that they tried too much to rationalize this futuristic world. Indeed, that was just one of the qualities of the original MTV cartoon : the cloak of mystery surrounding this fascinating world. After removing it, it made even less sense and the whole thing became rather ridiculous and pointless. Anyway, to conclude, I have seen worse movies, there were even some good stuff here but, eventually, it remains a disappointing flick and it is not really worth a look.

This movie was a perfect example. Seriously, I keep watching movies starring Tim Allen and, each time, I'm amazed how worthless his movie are. Even this time, he was playing a womanizer which was actually something new for him but, as usual, he was not convincing whatsoever. Concerning the movie itself, it was basically an awkward and embarassing mix of dark comedy and drama. The jokes were terrible and sometimes even tasteless and when they tried to get serious, the whole thing just became painfully corny. Honestly, I think the concept was not bad at all and it actually had some potential. There was also an interesting cast (Tim Allen, Elisha Cuthbert, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Jenna Elfman, Andie MacDowell, Chris Klein, Paz Vega) but none of them impressed me whatsoever. To conclude, once again, Tim Allen displayed his lack to talent and charisma in this abysmal comedy, the damned thing is not worth a look at all and you should definitely avoid it.

XXX: State of the Union)
Following the success of 'xXx, it wasn't really surprising that they decided to make a sequel. What was more surprising is that Vin Diesel didn't come back as Xander Cage. If I understood correctly, Mr Diesel thought that to show up in a sequel was underneath his 'status'. Considering how disappointing his career turned out to be, he shouldn't have been so arrogant... Anyway, back to the 'State of the Union'. Basically, it is a rather average action flick with lots of shootings, explostions and all that stuff. I have nothing against Ice Cube but he didn't really have enough charisma to make us forget Xander Cage. It seems also like centuries ago that Lee Tamahori directed the great and awesome 'Once Were Warriors'. Since then, he has been directing most of the time average action flicks and thrillers ('Next', 'Die Another Day', 'Along Came a Spider', 'The Edge', 'Mulholland Falls'). He seemed to be a very talented director and it is a real shame. To conclude, this flick is not really bad whatsover but it is really generic and disposable and it is not really worth a look, expect maybe if you are a die-hard fan of action movies.

Well, once again, I’m afraid they let me down. Indeed, the whole thing was just so half-baked. I mean, I have to admit it, the directing was not bad but the story was just way too generic for me and, above all, the acting was actually pretty weak. I'm not sure we should blame the actors since they didn't have much to chew on. Indeed, the dialogues were very poor and the characters were just boring and uninteresting. Basically, it was your typical ghost house story with a few (very predictable) jumpy moments but there was absolutely nothing new or remotely original about the whole thing so I was rather bored during the whole duration. To be honest, I’m not surprised the Pang brothers went back to Hong Kong after delivering these 2 really weak features. Anyway, to conclude, it was just a really average horror flick and it is not really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of Kristen Stewart.

Seriously, I find it hard to believe that they have already made 4 movies from this concept. Anyway, I rewatched it recently with my step-son and it gave me pretty much the same feeling as the first time I saw the damned thig. I mean, I have to admit it, the concept is cool, it looks pretty good but the end-result is still rather average in my opinion. What bothered me the most the second time I watched it was the acting. Indeed, except for Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy who can do no wrong in any movie, the rest of the cast was not really impressive. I mean, Kate Beckinsale sure looks nice and all with her latex outfit but I thought that her acting was pretty average. It's too bad since there is definitely some potential with an interesting mythology but it is quite obvious that they were above all interested to mix the matrix with some vampires and werewolves. To conclude, it is not really bad at all, and there is some interesting stuff but I can't say I was convinced by the whole thing and, in my opinion, it is not really worth a look, except if you are a die-hard fan of vampires and/of werewolves.

Since I kept hearing good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. The interesting thing about this flick was above all to see Reese Witherspoon who, before starring in all those (boring) romantic comedies, showed up in this highschool satire. Honestly, I was expecting a little more but I must admit, it was still pretty good. Indeed, Matthew Broderick, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Klein were all perfectly cast and they all gave some really good performances. Furthermore, if you compare it to all those generic comedies taking place in highschool, this one was really original and gave a really different point of view with some pitch black humor. Still, in my opinion, the whole thing never really reached its full potential and maybe they should have gone all the way into the dark humor, I don't know. The fact that I didn't care much about the characters and their predicament didn't much help either, I guess. Still, it is definitely a funny and original high-school based comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you want to see something different starring Reese Witherspoon.
