An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 10 September 2011 03:51 (A review of Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have became slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example. Indeed, even though, when I was a kid, I thought that that ā€˜Crocodile Dundeeā€™ was pretty cool, thatā€™s a movie didnā€™t grow old well at all. With this in mind, it is rather bewildering that, 13 years after the last previous sequel, they still came up with a 3rd instalment when, in fact, Iā€™m pretty sure nobody was waiting for another outback adventure. I donā€™t know maybe they thought it was really necessary to round up the trilogy. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much but it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. I mean, the plot was pretty weak and completely predictable but Crocodile Dundee still remain a charming character. Eventually, it was average , rather harmless and obviously aimed to a young audience but if you are older than 13 years old, it is not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 9 September 2011 12:49 (A review of Addicted to Love)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from this flick. I mean, I have to admit it, I do have a weak spot for Meg Ryan but I have never been really wild about Matthew Broderick. Basically, Iā€™ll give you that, the guy has done a few interesting movies in his career but most of the time, I find him just too bland and not really interesting. Anyway, here they were working together in a romantic-comedy (did Meg Ryan ever really tried something else?!?) and the result was unfortunately rather underwhelming. I mean, Meg Ryan was quite charming, as usual, but the story was not really entertaining whatsoever and I really had a hard time to care about the characters or what they were going through. Apparently, they tried to make some kind of sassy and edgy romantic-comedy but the characters were more annoying than entertaining. There was a also this terribly stereotypical and very obnoxious French character played by Tcheky Karyo (a French actor who used to show up quite often in Hollywood productions) and I guess it didnā€™t help me to enjoy this movie a little more, in the contrary. To conclude, it is basically a really average romantic-comedy and it is not really worth a look, even if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 9 September 2011 09:56 (A review of The Proposal)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it was a big success at the box-office, I was quite curious to check this flick. First of all, I always had a weak spot for Sandra Bullock and I really enjoyed saying this actress playing an uptight bitch. Indeed, she did it so well and it was really refreshing to see her doing something else that her usual roles. Unfortunately, during the last 20 minutes, Ā her character suddenly completely changed and became one of her typically really nice girls which was just so boring. Concerning Ryan Reynolds, I haven't much to say about the guy. I mean, he was alright and rather funny most of the time but his character was not really interesting. Something rather surprising about this movie was that most of the characters were well played and rather believable, especially the supporting parts. Of course, there were a few stupid and awkward scenes (the dog/eagle thing, the exotic dancer, the indian chanting dance). To conclude, even though it was nothing really original and even though it was really predictable, I thought it was still a well made and entertaining romantic-comedy and if you like the genre, it is definitely worth a look.

A bad movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 8 September 2011 09:47 (A review of Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties)

Honestly, I didnā€™t like ā€˜Garfieldā€™ at all. I mean, even if the cat was rather well made from a technical point of view, the plot was terribly lame and had nothing to do with the strip-book whatsoever (a rather awesome strip-book as a matter of fact). Anyway, if I didnā€™t like this sequel, why should I bother watch the sequel? Well, I guess, since it was on TV and I just love wasting my time watching some major garbage, I just ended up watching this flick. Another thing that bothered me is that, in 'Zombieland', Bill Murray complained that the only movie that really embarrassed him was 'Garfield'. I'm pretty sure that they didn't made this up in the movie but maybe they did. The question is why would he bother even making this sequel?!? Ok, there is, as always, the money factor, I guess, but still. Anyway, I watched it with my step-son (I know, it is a very lame excuse...) but I thought the whole thing was just plain boring. I mean, at this point, there was almost nothing left from the original comic-book in here and the whole thing was pretty much worthless. To conclude, it is pretty bad and not worth a look, except maybe if you are under 13 years old.

A very good movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 7 September 2011 07:03 (A review of Bay of Angels)

Basically, it is once again one of those really obscure French movies which almost no one has seen here on Listal. Indeed, it is one of those unknow/underrated gem and I'm pretty sure everybody has forgot about it but it's a real shame since I really loved this movie. Until today, I never really realized that it had been directed by Jacques Demy. I have seen Demyā€™s more famous features (ā€˜Les parapluies de Cherbourgā€™ and ā€˜Les demoiselles de Rochefortā€™) but I never really cared about those. He did direct this flick before those two and I thought it was much darker and simply much better. Indeed, it is one of those fascinating stories about gambling (a favorite theme of mine, especially when it is well handled like here) and, actually, I do believe it is one of the best movies about the subject. Indeed, most of the glamour is removed and what remains is the sadness, the loneliness and general sorrow involving the gambling habit. On top of that, there were 2 very interesting characters thanks to the amazing performances by Jeanne Moreau and Claude Mann. To conclude, even though it is a really obscure flick, it is actually really good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

A disappointing movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 7 September 2011 03:13 (A review of Angel of Mine)

This movie was a perfect example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Sandrine Bonnaire and Catherine Frot. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from this flick but, basically, it was one of those typical French thrillers. Indeed, there was no chase, shootings or explosions like you would get in your average Hollywood thriller and it was more based on the mood and the characters like those good old thrillers directed by Hitchcock. Furthermore, Catherine Frot and Sandrine Bonnaire were both quite convincing and they gave some solid performances. Unfortunately, even though the story was very intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat, the end, on the other hand, turned out ot be rather weak. Indeed, there was a very annoying and disappointing twist at the end and it kind of ruined the whole thing for me and the fact that they added the note 'based on a true story' didn't help whatsoever. Anyway, to conclude, even though it turned out to be a rather underwhelming thriller, I thought it was well made and it is still worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

An average movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 6 September 2011 09:30 (A review of The Dream Team)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have became slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one of two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some rather obscure features. This movie was a good example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Michael Keaton. Well, I did like the way the whole thing Ā started. Indeed, in spite of the fact that it was a comedy, the mental patients were not only funny but also 3 dimensional and the way the movie was able to balance the comedy with the seriousness of the subject was actually pretty neat. Unfortunately, from the moment the whole plot started to focus on these dirty cops, the movie really lost focus, it Ā became really absurd and I kind of lost interest in the whole thing. Still, The 4 main actors were pretty good, especially Michael Keaton who was just born to play this part. To conclude, I donā€™t think it was really great at all but it was entertaining enough Ā so I still think it is worth a look.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 6 September 2011 09:53 (A review of My Girl)

Back in the 90's, Macaulay Culkin was a huge star but, honestly, I never understood his appeal. I mean, I have actually nothing against him but, in my opinion, Macaulay Culkin was one of the most overrated child actors ever. I mean, I never thought he was really that good and I thought he was even actually pretty obnoxious, especially in those 'Home Alone' flicks. However, there was at least one exception and it was this movie. Indeed, even though it was actually nothing really original, it was actually a very touching story and simply a well made family drama. Macaulay Culkin here, for once, toned down his usual hysteria and gave a solid performance and with Anna Chlumsky, they had some very good chemistry which is something pretty remarkable since they were just some kids. In general, movies about children can be pretty condescending or over-sentimental but I thought that this movie touched the right note and I really enjoyed it. To conclude, it is seriously one of the best movies dealing with children that I have seen and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you have a weak spot for Macaulay Culkin.

A good movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 6 September 2011 07:40 (A review of 13)

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I thought I should check it out. Eventually, the whole thing was another example of my theory that you shouldn't know too much before watching a movie. In this case, if you would know what it was about before watching the movie, the first 30 minutes would have been then completely useless. Thankfully, I didn't know anything about the damned thing and, thanks to this lack of information, it created a compelling ominous atmosphere. Of course, I knew that something fishy was going on but I never sure knew what it was exactly, at least, during the first 30 minutes. Somehow, it did remind me of Hitchock in the way the suspense was slowly built up and the beginning was indeed rather slow but I thought it was quite efficient. To be honest, the performances were rather poor but it was a good thing that the characters were portrayed by some unknown actors (except for one I have seen before but he was not a big star whatsoever) and it enhanced the feeling of gloominess and hopelessness which dominated this flick. To conclude, even though it was probably not a masterpiece, I thought it was an original and interesting thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A disappointing movie

Posted : 13 years, 4 months ago on 6 September 2011 07:31 (A review of King of California)

I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood, I was quite eaget to check it out. Well, even though it turned out to be a decent watch, to be honest, I was actually still rather underwhelmed by the whole thing. Basically, it was one of those quirky indie comedies which try to be clever, funny and, well, quirky but, eventually, the end-result was, in my opinion, stupid, pathetic and honestly, rather boring. It's too bad because the 2 main characters were actually really interesting. Indeed, Evan Rachel Wood delivered, as usual, a solid performance but Michael Douglas was even better and the guy really stole the show. This actor has become famous for usually playing the same type of character, the arrogant, confident and powerful SOB and he does it very well. However, this time around, he went for something completely different, some kind of psychologically deranged person, he did it so well and he completely disappeared behind the character. To conclude, even though I thought the whole thing was rather disappointing, I still think it is worth a look though if only to check Michael Douglas's fine performance.
