(A review of
The Dream Team)
Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection or movies to choose from but, as a result, I have became slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one of two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some rather obscure features. This movie was a good example and the only reason I watched it was because it was featuring Michael Keaton. Well, I did like the way the whole thing Ā started. Indeed, in spite of the fact that it was a comedy, the mental patients were not only funny but also 3 dimensional and the way the movie was able to balance the comedy with the seriousness of the subject was actually pretty neat. Unfortunately, from the moment the whole plot started to focus on these dirty cops, the movie really lost focus, it Ā became really absurd and I kind of lost interest in the whole thing. Still, The 4 main actors were pretty good, especially Michael Keaton who was just born to play this part. To conclude, I donāt think it was really great at all but it was entertaining enough Ā so I still think it is worth a look.

(A review of
My Girl)
Back in the 90's, Macaulay Culkin was a huge star but, honestly, I never understood his appeal. I mean, I have actually nothing against him but, in my opinion, Macaulay Culkin was one of the most overrated child actors ever. I mean, I never thought he was really that good and I thought he was even actually pretty obnoxious, especially in those 'Home Alone' flicks. However, there was at least one exception and it was this movie. Indeed, even though it was actually nothing really original, it was actually a very touching story and simply a well made family drama. Macaulay Culkin here, for once, toned down his usual hysteria and gave a solid performance and with Anna Chlumsky, they had some very good chemistry which is something pretty remarkable since they were just some kids. In general, movies about children can be pretty condescending or over-sentimental but I thought that this movie touched the right note and I really enjoyed it. To conclude, it is seriously one of the best movies dealing with children that I have seen and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you have a weak spot for Macaulay Culkin.

Since I kept hearing some pretty good things about this flick, I thought I should check it out. Eventually, the whole thing was another example of my theory that you shouldn't know too much before watching a movie. In this case, if you would know what it was about before watching the movie, the first 30 minutes would have been then completely useless. Thankfully, I didn't know anything about the damned thing and, thanks to this lack of information, it created a compelling ominous atmosphere. Of course, I knew that something fishy was going on but I never sure knew what it was exactly, at least, during the first 30 minutes. Somehow, it did remind me of Hitchock in the way the suspense was slowly built up and the beginning was indeed rather slow but I thought it was quite efficient. To be honest, the performances were rather poor but it was a good thing that the characters were portrayed by some unknown actors (except for one I have seen before but he was not a big star whatsoever) and it enhanced the feeling of gloominess and hopelessness which dominated this flick. To conclude, even though it was probably not a masterpiece, I thought it was an original and interesting thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

(A review of
King of California)
I wasnāt sure what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood, I was quite eaget to check it out. Well, even though it turned out to be a decent watch, to be honest, I was actually still rather underwhelmed by the whole thing. Basically, it was one of those quirky indie comedies which try to be clever, funny and, well, quirky but, eventually, the end-result was, in my opinion, stupid, pathetic and honestly, rather boring. It's too bad because the 2 main characters were actually really interesting. Indeed, Evan Rachel Wood delivered, as usual, a solid performance but Michael Douglas was even better and the guy really stole the show. This actor has become famous for usually playing the same type of character, the arrogant, confident and powerful SOB and he does it very well. However, this time around, he went for something completely different, some kind of psychologically deranged person, he did it so well and he completely disappeared behind the character. To conclude, even though I thought the whole thing was rather disappointing, I still think it is worth a look though if only to check Michael Douglas's fine performance.

(A review of
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York)
Honestly, I didnāt expect much from this sequel. Indeed, since I was not really impressed by the first installment, there was a good chance that this 2nd movie would be even more underwhelming. Eventually, I have to admit it, the premise was actually alright and there was definitely some potential but, once again, I thought that Macaulay Culkin or the character he was portraying was actually pretty annoying so I really had hard time to care about the whole thing. Still, all in all, I guess it was somehow rather watchable but I seriously donāt really get the appeal of those movies. Eventually, even though this sequel was highly successful at the box-office and even though it is almost as well regarded as the classic first installment, I thought that the whole thing was rather average and actually pretty boring. It might be enjoyable for young kids so maybe I should have watched it 20 years earlier, I donāt know. To conclude, I didnāt really like this flick and in spite of its pretty good reputation, I donāt think it is really worth a look, expect probably if you are a fan of the previous installment which I'm obviously not.

(A review of
Exit Through the Gift Shop)
Since kept hearing some very good things about this flick, I was really curious about it and I was really eager to check it out. Wow... Eventually, I was rather blown away by the whole thing! First of all, there was a big discussion about the fact that it might actually be a fake but, personally, I didn't think it was a fake but I don't know for sure and, honestly, I really didn't care. Indeed, in my opinion, the whole thing really did happen and The allmighty Banksy actually got pissed off because Guetta got succesfull this way and decided to take revenge with this movie. But, of course, it is only a theory and we will never know for sure. On the other hand, it seemed that he still became mesmerized by this weird and egocentric French guy. Anyway, it was definitely a really intriguing study about Art and how you could define Art. It was also a fascinating jump into the graffiti world. I think the conclusion of the movie is that Art doesn't actually exist but it also can be found in everything. I know, this statement didn't seem to make much sense but it perfectly fit this movie. To conclude, it is a rather unique documentary and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
13 Going on 30)
I wasn't expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, indeed, it was nothing great, Iām afraid. In my opinion, the main issue with this flick is that it is based on such a very old formula. I mean, back in the 80ās, they made tons of those movies (āBigā being the most famous and probably the best one) but more than 20 years later, the whole concept felt terribly outdated and over baked. Actually, if they added something new or interesting, I could have been more intriguing but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be and they just simply followed the formula which was just terribly underwhelming. I have to admit it though, Jennifer Garner was alright and she did her best with this tedious material but I can't say she blew me away whatsoever. Eventually, the only redeeming feature was Mark Ruffalo who gave, as usual, a decent performance and I felt bad for the guy that he picked such a lame flick (at least, I hope he got a nice paycheck out of it). To conclude, I have seen worse and it is a rather harmless but it is still very average romantic comedy and I donāt think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

(A review of
Crocodile Dundee II)
Against all expectations, āCrocodile Dundeeā was a massive worldwide success, Ā so, obviously, since this movie was such a surprise success, a sequel was inevitable. I have to admit it, when I was kid, I thought this guy was pretty cool and the first installment was indeed quite charming and funny Ā but, unfortunately, this sequel was not really convincing, Iām afraid. I mean, sure, there were here and there a few funny scenes but the whole thing was just too long for my taste and some characters were just too stereotypical. Ā Eventually, I have this feeling that this 'Crocodile' Dundee character was actually more appealing for kids than grown-ups. For example, the scene where he hits a coca-cola tin with some stones might be great when you are very young but it is just way too corny for any adult. At least, from a financial point of view, he did make sense to come up rapidly with this sequel which Ā was still quite successful at the box-office but, eventually, 13 years later, when everybody completely forgot about this character, Ā they still came up with a 3rd installment which was a terrible idea and obviously nobody care for the damned thing. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I thought it was an average sequel and it is not really worth a look.

(A review of
Death on the Nile)
After 'Murder on the Orient Express', it is the second Agatha Christie's adaptation have seen recently. Basically, they pretty much followed the same template and, once again, they gave us a prestigious cast. In fact, I must say that I enjoyed this story more than the one they gave in Ā 'Murder...'. Indeed, concerning āMurderā¦ā, even though it was a fun movie to watch thanks to all the stars involved, I thought that the plot was actually rather disappointing and, in my opinion, it actually worked better in this movie. Furthermore, some of the characters were actually quite hilarious like Mrs. Van Schuyler (Bette Davis) and Miss Bowers (Maggie Smith). Unfortunately, some other characters were rather obnoxious and not really entertaining like Salome Otterbourne (Angela Lansbury) and Dr. Bessner (Jack Warden). Still, I thought the plot was quite thrilling even if I figured out the whole thing rather early on, even before anyone got killed. Inceed, except for 1 or 2 things, I thought it was actually quite obvious but it was still enjoyable anyway. To conclude, even though the whole thing was nothing really amazing, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like this genre.

(A review of
A Better Tomorrow)
By now, I have realized that I have a somewhat difficult relationship with John Woo. I mean, like many other directors, when I was a younger, I heard the most incredible things about his work and I became fascinated by the guy, even before watching one single movie he directed. I think I started with 'The Killer' which is supposedly a great masterpiece but which turned out to be one of the most disappointing flicks I have ever seen. After all these years, I guess I should give āThe Killerā a second chance, since it is a such a classic, but somehow, Iām still pushing it for some indefinite period of time. Since then, I have been cautious before watching one of his movies, especially the older ones from his Hong-Kong glory. Fortunately, this time around, I was rather satisfied by the end result. I mean, of course, the story was nothing great (something you apparently you have to accept in a John Woo feature otherwise it is practically impossible to see the āgreatnessā displayed) and the action scenes were completely preposterous. Still, I have to admit it, Chow Yun Fat was definitely and totally badass and the whole thing was just damned entertaining. To conclude, even thought I donāt think it is really that great, I still liked the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
