A classic

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 23 September 2022 10:40 (A review of Strike)

Since this movie was directed by Sergei Eisenstein, I was quite eager to check it out. Indeed, I did see ā€˜Battleship Potemkin’, arguably his most famous movie, but it was maybe 20 years ago, it was really neat to finally see another movie from this great master, especially after all these years. I was surprised to find out that it was actually his directorial debut as the damned thing was quite complex and ambitious for a first-timer. Still, to be honest, I have to admit that I had actually a rather hard time to get into the damned thing though. The fact that such Soviet propaganda movies actually never focused on the characters individually and instead handled the working class as one single character probably didn’t help. On the other hand, I have to admit that it was just quite inspiring and exhilarating to see this crowd of working men rising up all together against their bosses but also the whole system in general. Even if you believe that Communism and Socialism were the worst possible thing in the world, there was a time when an alternative was actually possible. At least, for a short while, it was explored and this alternative did provide something else than our current endless chase after financial profits and personal gain. The final act during which the ruthless repression took place was also strong and, unfortunately, felt quite realistic. It’s interesting that, when you read other reviews, they mostly focus on the technical aspects of this movie which was, for the time, apparently quite groundbreaking, but, to be honest, I didn’t focus too much on that. Anyway, to conclude, even though if it didn’t really grab me, it was still an interesting watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Eisenstein’s work

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 22 September 2022 09:26 (A review of It Comes at Night)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I usually have a weak spot for such minimalist horror features but, to be honest, I’m rather surprised this movie received such solid reviews. I mean, it’s not that it was bad, it’s just that it never really impressed me in any way. For starters, like probably many other viewers, I was actually really annoyed by the title. Sure, when it was all finished, I get that it was probably hinting at Travis’s nightmares but, in my opinion, it was actually such a cheap way to build up the expectations of the audience as, eventually, nothing came at night after all. Concerning the movie itself, I have to admit that it was a decent post-apocalyptic horror flick but, to be honest, they didn’t do anything really interesting with the genre though. The fact that many like me have seen more than 10 seasons of ā€˜The Walking Dead’ probably didn’t help. Another issue was that even though there were only 5 characters, none of them was really developed, with Travis being the only exception. Indeed, it was probably the most interesting aspect of this movie, the way they displayed how traumatizing such extreme circumstances must be for children and teenagers. However, I wonder if it was really the goal of this movie though. Anyway, it was really not enough and I wish they did more with the other characters. In this case, the biggest victim was Carmen Ejogo. Indeed, she was seriously completely wasted here as her character was basically given nothing to do at all. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch though, even if it was mostly forgettable.Ā

A classic

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 21 September 2022 12:12 (A review of The Last Laugh)

Since this movie seemed to have a solid reputation (it is included in the ā€˜1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’ list among other things), I was quite eager to check it out. Well, even though it might seem to be a simple story (it is basically about a guy losing his job, not much more), I have to admit that I was really impressed by the sheer power of its visuals and of the performances, especially by Emil Jannings who played the main character. It’s only afterwards that I discovered that Jannings, arguably one of the best actors of all time, was actually a major Nazi supporter and I’m glad I didn’t know that before watching the damned thing. Anyway, it was still a powerful movie, so powerful, that they didn’t have to use a single title card for the dialogues. Seriously, it was quite impressive and there was not a single moment while what was going on was not crystal clear. Furthermore, it was such a sad movie, probably one of the saddest I have seen so far. The saddest part, at least for me, was when his neighborhood found out that he had actually lost his job and was pretending to still be a doorman. Indeed, for some reason, maybe I’m too optimistic but I was expecting them to be supportive but, eventually, they were all mocking him which was just so cruel but I guess it was actually true to human nature, I’m afraid. There was also this rather weird and ridiculous happy ending coming from nowhere. Apparently, the producers forced F.W. Murnau and Carl Mayer to end up with something else and more upbeat than the inevitable death of the poor doorman but since they really hated this idea, they went for something really far-fetched and cynical. At first, this ending really bothered me but, the more I think about it, the more I believe it was actually quite brilliant. Anyway, to conclude, it has been a while since I have seen such a strong silent feature and the damned thing is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 20 September 2022 11:56 (A review of Elle s'en va)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Catherine Deneuve, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be about a middle-aged woman going through some kind of middle-life crisis and going on a road-trip in the process. To be honest, I always thought that the road-trip was easily the laziest genre but I have to admit that, in this case, she did leave without a plan or a specific goal which was at least refreshing. It was also interesting that she then spent hours on the desolated French countryside and, being myself from Normandy, it all looked actually quite familiar. Unfortunately, this movie never really worked for me though. Indeed, the beginning felt really rushed but, even more problematic was the fact that they kept adding some characters, some even more random than the others. Some of them seemed to be interesting but not all of them though and there were probably too many characters involved after all. Eventually, the damned thing was just really messy and not in a good way. In fact, at some point, completely out of the blue, the main character got a call from her daughter, a character never even mentioned before, and the whole thing took a completely left turn from that point. However, I have to admit that the blossoming relationship between this elderly woman and her grandchild was probably one of the best moments in this movie. Anyway, what I mostly enjoyed with this movie was how much Catherine Deneuve managed to do with this rather weak material. Indeed, eventually, even if it never really worked, thanks to Catherine Deneuve, it was still a decent watch though and, only thanks for her, it might be actually worth a look, even if the damned thing might be completely forgettable.

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 19 September 2022 09:47 (A review of The Palm Beach Story)

Since this movie seemed to have a solid reputation (it is included in the ā€˜1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die’ list among other things), I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, to be honest, I’m usually not a huge fan of such classic screwball comedies. In this case, there was also the issue that they developed the idea that, for a pretty woman like Gerry Jeffers, the best prospect was not to find an actual job to support herself but finding some rich guy who would support her. Sure, you might argue that I shouldn’t take this movie too seriously but it did make the damned thing look rather dated. And, yet, I have to admit that this movie actually worked for me. For starters, the intro was just so weird, I had no idea what this movie was actually about and I thought they were showing that would actually happen afterwards. However, the story was not about how this couple fell in love and got married. Indeed, instead, it was about how she tried to escape this marriage, not because they didn’t care for each other anymore but mostly because their marriage was a failure considering their financial and social status. Well, I have to admit that this approach was actually Ā quite refreshing. And, then, in the same fashion, the very last scene was just as surprising as the intro was, I guess it all made sense or maybe not. Finally, I really enjoyed most of the jokes and most of the dialogues were just so fun and witty. Anyway, to conclude, even if I’m still not a huge fan of the genre, I have to admit that it was a really entertaining screwball comedy and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 18 September 2022 09:37 (A review of Accident)

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie since it was directed by Joseph Losey, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a rather tricky movie to judge. Indeed, on the surface, it basically focused on some rather pathetic and oversexed middle-aged college professors constantly praying and obsessing on their female students. On top of the that, none of the characters involved was really likeable or even really interesting. And, yet, I really enjoyed Josey cold but very classy directing and most of the scenes were beautifully set up and composed. As a result, I was instantly drawn into these academic world whose activities, at least, mentally, had very little to do with actual academics. I still think it’s too bad they didn’t give Jacqueline Sassard much to do though. Sure, I’ll have to admit that she was extremely charismatic and she definitely had an electric screen presence. However, to be honest, I wonder if she could act at all because that’s pretty much all she did, showing up and standing up during her scenes while all the male characters were drooling over her. Maybe it was by design, to show that they never actually cared about what she was actually thinking or saying, that it was all about possessing her physically. It was also interesting that even though pretty much every single scene was filled with sexual tension, most of it was much more mental than physical. In fact, I wonder if Stephen and Anna actually had sex after the car accident. I think they did which would be obviously pretty messed up but I really like the fact that, as it was displayed in this movie, we will actually never know for sure. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t completely work for me, it was still a really intriguing movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Joseph Losey’s work.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 17 September 2022 09:00 (A review of The Flowers of St. Francis)

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie but since it was included in the ā€˜They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?’ list, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, it was the very first movie directed by Roberto Rossellini that I have seen so far and, hopefully, I will watch much more of his work in the near future. The first interesting thing about this movie was that, even though it seemed deeply pious, Rossellini was not really a religious man himself. In fact, back then right when he was making this movie, there was this huge scandal as he was having a baby with Ingrid Bergman while they were still both married with other people. I guess, Rossellini was a little bit like me in the sense that, even if he wasn’t really religious, he thought that religion was a fascinating subject. Still, even if this movie was intriguing, it was never really fascinating though. I mean, I did appreciate its focus on the purest form of Catholicism but, in my opinion, its episodic form prevented it from really developing St. Francis as a character and also as a concept. Sure, it was faithful to the book it was based from, ā€˜Little Flowers of St. Francis’ which was based on more than 50 episodic chapters but I just didn’t care much for this approach. It was still a fine piece Italian neo-realism though and I was amazed to discover afterwards that the characters were not played by actors but by actual Franciscan monks. Apparently, Rossellini usually preferred to work with non-professional actors and, in this case, it did work fine. Anyway, to conclude, even though it is not a really easy movie to digest, it was still an interesting watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 16 September 2022 10:19 (A review of Blair Witch)

Even though this sequel didn’t get much love when it was released, since I always had a weak spot for ā€˜The Blair Witch Project’, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, after all these years, I still haven’t watch ā€˜Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2’ but I should definitely check it out at some point, just to see how terrible it actually is. Anyway, to be honest, I don’t think this new sequel was bad at all after all. Indeed, it turned out to be a rather faithful follow-up to the classic horror feature, even though it has been a while since I have seen such nauseating found-footage scenes. Maybe they could have deviated from the original and gave a couple of scenes at the beginning to develop more the characters though. Instead, they developed more the last act which really did deviate from ā€˜The Blair Witch Project’. Of course, they still ended up with a house which was not supposed to be there, in fact, it was exactly the same house. However, they did add much more action scenes but I don’t think it was such a great idea. Indeed, that’s probably the only thing that they didn’t understand. Basically, the original movie did work because it focused on the psychological trauma experienced by the characters and they actually showed almost nothing which was just so creepy. By showing so much more basic horror stuff, this movie was therefore much less effective. And, yet, I have to admit it, it was actually pretty creepy and I needed a couple of minutes to shake this feeling away when it was finished which shows that, in spite of its obvious flaws, the damned thing actually did work. Anyway, to conclude, sure, this movie was probably another useless sequel (like 99% of all sequels) but I thought it was actually mildly entertaining and I guess it might be actually worth a look but only if you really like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 15 September 2022 11:40 (A review of Humanity And Paper Balloons)

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie but since it was included in the ā€˜They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?’ list, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, I wonder if the English title was a literal translation of the Japanese title but it is probably one of the greatest titles I came across. It might sound cryptic but it completely made sense with this movie, especially during the very last scene. Concerning Sadao Yamanaka, I had never heard of the guy before, he apparently died pretty young but he was apparently a major influence on all the great Japanese directors that came afterwards such as Akira Kurosawa or YasujirĆ“ Ozu. And, indeed, it was quite impressive how immersive the world created by Yamanaka was. He really gave you the feeling that you were transported 2 centuries ago in Feudal Japan and you basically spent most of the running time in some rather poor neighborhood with so many intriguing characters. It was also pretty neat how, even though the material was fairly dark and the hopes of the involved characters were rather bleak, there was still quite a lot of humor. And, yet, the damned thing was still missing something though. It might had to do with the fact that, since there were quite a lot of characters involved, many were not really developed whatsoever. There was also the fact that, even though Shinza was always intriguing and kept surprising me, I had a hard time to care about Matajuro Unno, the ronin. I mean, how many times do you need to get rejected before moving on? Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t completely blow me away, it was still a strong vintage Japanese drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 7 months ago on 14 September 2022 09:05 (A review of Not Okay)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was selected by IndieWire as one of the best movies released in 2022 so far and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, except for IndieWire, this movie didn’t get much love after all if you check the ratings on IMDb but I thought it was not bad at all. Indeed, the beginning was basically a pitch-black satire of the current social media craze and it did work mostly because, even though it might seem far-fetched, I don’t think it was so removed from the truth. Indeed, what could be the percentage of fake stuff on social media platforms? 50%? Even more? Eventually, the bottom line is that nobody really cares if it is true or not, as long as it is a catchy story and I think it was perfectly displayed in this movie. The intriguing thing was that, after the main character had some lousy pathetic sex with another vapid influencer, they actually changed the mood and the focus of this tale. Indeed, it became suddenly a serious drama showing what someone could achieve if they use social media platforms for a righteous cause. It also displayed that, by interacting with ā€˜real’ people, by getting involved in something so profound as human trauma, the main character drastically changed. As a result, I think I actually preferred the 2nd half of this movie. Unfortunately, this switch in the tone was just jarring though. Indeed, while both parts had merits, it felt almost like watching 2 completely different movies. Furthermore, even though they started with a cute warning stating that this movie was dealing with ā€˜an unlikable female protagonist’, it still seemed that they chickened out and tried to humanize her somehow, which completely clashed with how she was first presented. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in this subject.Ā
