An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 1 May 2022 07:02 (A review of Daddy's Home 2)

First of all, I have to admit that I didn’t really like ‘Daddy’s Home’ but since this sequel was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I’m probably giving this movie way too much credit because I was expecting something so bad but, to be honest, I thought it was not bad at all. Of course, the damned thing was really generic and completely predictable but, at least, I thought it was much more enjoyable than the previous installment which completely bored me. Indeed, in ‘Daddy’s Home’, the huge mistake they made was to constantly focus on the annoying and tedious bickering between Brad and Dusty but, with this sequel, it was actually the other way around, they focused instead on how well they got along which was much more fun and enjoyable to watch. Of course, they had to bring someone else to mess up this harmony between them and poor Mel Gibson did end up with this rather thankless job. Seriously, I was constantly wondering what was this guy problem. I mean, in ‘Daddy’s Home’, Dusty’s behavior was just really annoying as well but he was acting this way because he was afraid he might loose his children. But why would a grand-father try to start a feud between his son and the stepfather of his grandchildren, especially since they seem to get along so well? Was he maybe jealous to see other people happy? Anyway, fortunately, there were so many characters and so many subplots involved this time around that everything attempted by Kurt never really had such an impact on the whole thing. Hell, even the jokes seemed to be slight better this time around and even the Christmas vibe actually worked. I don’t know why I’m being actually rather positive, it’s probably only because it didn’t turn out to be a complete disaster after all. Anyway, to conclude, I’m probably being way too generous here but I guess it might be actually worth a look, at least, if you really like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 30 April 2022 06:38 (A review of Luizenmoeder - De film)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jennifer Hoffman, I thought I might as well check it out with my wife. It was apparently based on a very successful Dutch  TV-show that we both didn’t see it but its success was the main reason why my wife was eager to see this movie. Well, eventually, even though she really liked it, to be honest, I didn’t care much about the damned thing. I mean, there was definitely some potential and it was definitely not awful but there were just too many things that didn’t work or even bothered me. Basically, the main issue was that there were just too many things going on, as if they tried to tell a whole season of the TV-show in 2 hours. Seriously, it has been a while since I have seen such an overstuffed movie. As a result, there were just so many characters involved and, to make things worse, some of them were borderline awful. Indeed, the teachers and kids were maybe not super interesting but they were not bad and at least they were harmless. On the other hand, I really had a hard time to stand the parents. Sure, I got the idea, it was supposed to be a quirky community but I didn’t think it was funny at all to have most of them making some racist jokes or comments through the whole duration. Then, another issue was I didn’t care much for the tone. Indeed, they went for something slightly realistic but they still mixed up some comedy elements to lighten up the proceedings which was a bad idea, at least, as far as I was concerned. Anyway, to conclude, I didn’t connect with this movie at all but I still think it can be worth a look though, at least, if you really like this kind of Dutch movies.

A very good movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 28 April 2022 08:13 (A review of Won't You Be My Neighbor?)

Less than 2 years ago, I saw ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’. Back then, I had never heard of Fred Rogers before but the guy turned out to be so interesting that I became quite eager to see this documentary, especially since it had been so well received when it was released. Well, even though there is no way that such a children TV program would appeal to me now or even when I was a kid, I was amazed by how Rogers managed to touch me. Eventually, it is usually slightly annoying when they keep praising someone in such documentaries but this movie is one of the very few exceptions as, in this case, it felt completely justified. Indeed, Rogers is probably one of the most inspiring guys I have ever seen and to hear him speaking is actually such a life-altering experience, at least, as far as I was concerned. Seriously, I was on the verge of tears by the end of this movie. One of the very few critics made towards him was the fact that he might have spoiled a whole generation of children with his gentle approach but it was hardly convincing. I mean, how can you ruin a child by telling he/she is a special at a very young age and by telling them that they deserve to be loved? What would be then a better alternative? Basically, it is all about the power of love and compassion, some concepts Fred Rogers managed to master very early on in his life. There was also some discussion about the fact he was actually a religious man but, even if I’m not religious myself, I still felt such a deep connection with him. Anyway, to conclude, the damned thing was just quite fascinating to behold and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Fred Rogers.

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 27 April 2022 07:02 (A review of Mr. Klein (1976))

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Joseph Losey, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I think it was only the 2nd movie I saw directed by this director but it definitely turned out to be an intriguing watch, that’s for sure. Indeed, even though the French have produced 100’s of movies praising the French resistance and how they bravely fought against the German oppressors, this movie did present a much colder reality displaying that the French society was also filled with cowards, backstabbers and profiters. At the center of this dark and oppressing tale, you have Alain Delon, an actor I definitely should watch more often, who was so charismatic back in those days. And yet, right from the very start, his character was rather unlikeable and, if you would expect this guy to grow a conscious following the events displayed in this movie, you would be rather disappointed but this commitment to this character was actually commendable and appreciated. Still, it went even further as the Losey went for a rather surrealist vibe which made the whole thing even more intriguing. However, to be honest, it is also made the whole thing even more difficult to grasp as there were some moments during which I was scratching my head wondering what the hell was going on and how and where did this guy actually landed. Eventually, I think you have to be in the right mood to be able to enjoy such a slow paced mystery during which you discover pretty much nothing and during which the characters don’t seem to evolve either. Anyway, to conclude, even if it wasn’t really an easy movie to digest, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 26 April 2022 09:31 (A review of The United States vs. Billie Holiday)

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Lee Daniels, I thought I might as well check it out. First of all, to be honest, I wasn’t really familiar with Billie Holiday’s life and career so it was already pretty neat to get more acquainted with this great artist. On top of that, even though I didn’t know much about Billie Holiday, I was still impressed by Andra Day who not only had a great voice but also delivered a strong performance. As a result, she was even nominated for an Academy Award for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, a nomination she definitely deserved. Unfortunately, even though it was an intriguing story, I’m afraid the rest of the movie was not really good. Indeed, even though the title might make you think that this movie was about the persecution of Billie Holiday by the FBI, it was also about her drug addiction, her toxic relationships with most men and how she apparently fell in love with a FBI agent tailing her. Eventually, even though there was nothing really wrong with any of these ideas (her love story with this FBI agent was still rather far-fetched though), the biggest issue was that Lee Daniels struggled to deliver something really cohesive. Garrett Hedlund was also rather weak and unconvincing but he wasn’t helped by the fact that it seemed rather dubious that Harry J. Anslinger, a FBI major figure, would get personally so involved. I mean, it didn’t seem unlikely that the FBI would persecute her but it was more likely that Anslinger would keep an eye on her from his office instead of showing up himself on a regular basis to check/harass Holiday. Eventually, sending some goons like Jimmy Fletcher would have been more than enough. Anyway, to conclude, even though it could have been much better, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Billie Holiday.

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 25 April 2022 08:14 (A review of Gloria Bell)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Julianne Moore, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, it’s only afterwards that I discovered that it was actually directed by Sebastián Lelio, the director of the very solid ‘Una mujer fantástica’, and this movie was in fact a remake of Lelio’s own movie called ‘Gloria’, a movie which I haven't seen yet. Well, once again, I really enjoyed Lelio’s realitisc approach. Indeed, the characters felt really authentic, with some real life, some real jobs and some real problems. However, if this approach was one of the biggest assets of this movie, it was also probably its downfall as well, I’m afraid. I mean, it’s rather funny that, on most of the websites, they say this movie is dealing with ‘a free-spirited woman’ but I thought she was actually just plain average which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, in the contrary. Anyway, the bottom line was that, even though I was intriguing by what Gloria was going through, I was never really fascinated though. At least, it was a good thing that she was played by such a charismatic actress like Julianne Moore. Indeed, Moore is really a fine actress and she was once again really good here. Concerning John Turturro, he is also a solid actor and he did what he could but it was pretty much impossible to root for this character after he randomly ditched Gloria not once but twice. Coming back on Gloria, I wish I knew more about what happened her during the 12 years between her divorce and the present days. Did she have a string of failed relationships? Was she single all this time? Anyway, to conclude, even if it never really grabbed me, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you want to see another fine performance by Julianne Moore.

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 24 April 2022 06:54 (A review of The Children Act)

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Emma Thompson, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I can’t remember the last time Thompson had such a juicy role and she definitely nailed it. Seriously, it was quite dazzling to see her character jumping from one case to another but she was always on point. I also did appreciate the directing by Richard Eyre which might seem too straightforward but I think it worked fine with this topic. Finally, the whole dilemma around the decision if this young man should live or die was actually quite fascinating. Indeed, I’m not a religious man but Adam and his father had actually some compelling arguments about why he should be allowed to die if he wanted to. It’s also interesting that, according to the British law, in 100% of the cases, the judges always choose to force the children to be treated, regardless of what their parents might want or what could be their religious beliefs so why did Fiona Maye went through all this trouble? The outcome was also really intriguing since, even though she did save Adam’s life in the process, she also turned his life completely upside down and, as a result, he was so confused and even completely lost. Of course, you might argue that his behavior was seriously erratic but you are talking about a very influenceable young boy who lived his all whole life under a very strict religious dogma which suddenly had been lifted with nothing to replace it. Unfortunately, it felt as if the writers got stuck at some point as it seemed that they didn’t know where to go from this point on. As a result, the only thing they could come up with was apparently to have Adam getting sick again and making him choose to die this time around which was, in my opinion, a rather cheap option to swiftly wrap everything up. I didn’t even mention Fiona Maye’s marital issues because, even though it was an obvious attempt to show she had a complicated life like anyone else, it was however hardly interesting. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was maybe not a masterpiece, it was still a solid drama and it is definitely worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 23 April 2022 06:45 (A review of 21 Bridges)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was one of the last movies starring Chadwick Boseman, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, in spite of Boseman's tremendous charisma and talent, to be honest, I'm not surprised that it turned out to be a box-office flop when it was released. Sure, it was fairly entertaining but I'm afraid it wasn't enough and the fact that the damned thing was just so generic and predictable certainly didn't help. I mean, right from the moment you see this group of cops showing up at this restaurant for some reasons completely unrelated to the robbery actually taking place at the very same moment, it was all pretty obvious what was going on. Maybe it would have been more interesting if they took a darker approach. Anyway, solving this massive corruption case by getting some crucial intel in some USB sticks provided by a completely random character was actually pretty lazy. At least, it was refreshing that the two robbers were both not some complete idiots but, eventually, the only one who managed to do something really interesting with his character was Boseman. Indeed, even if the material was actually rather disappointing, he certainly made the most of it and was always compelling to watch. I wish I could say the same about Sienna Miller though. I mean, it's not that she was really bad but, as usual, she was given so little to do and it seems that the main focus with her was to make sure that her character was not too pretty. Seriously, they could have removed her character and I don't think it would have made a difference. In fact, it would have isolated Boseman's character even more making his situation even more difficult and therefore more intriguing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it is worth a look though, if only to see Chadwick Boseman shine one more time.

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 22 April 2022 11:26 (A review of Adam by Eve: A live in Animation)

To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick but since the trailer was intriguing, I thought I might as well check it out. That’s the cool thing with Netflix, if you dig deep enough, you can actually watch some really wild obscure stuff. In this case, I have to admit that I had never heard of Eve before but, even though it is always pretty neat to discover some new artists, none of his songs really grabbed me though. I mean, I really liked his band, they were pretty good and played some really cool music but there wasn’t a single moment during which I thought that the guy had a great voice. Another issue was that, I obviously saw this movie with some subtitles, and, seriously, it seemed that all his texts were pretty much some gibberish and, combined with the endless flow of chaotic and unrelated visuals, well, the end-result was slightly headache inducing. Concerning the visual aspect which was the main reason why I wanted to check this movie, there was definitely some cool stuff. However, the editing was just relentless and chaotic. Indeed, each scene would last maybe only 2 or 3 seconds and, then, something completely unrelated would just pop up on the screen or they would just jump to something completely different. Eventually, I wish they did slow it down a bit, I would then have been much more able to appreciate what the hell was going on my screen. Coming back on Eve, I liked the fact that the guy never showed his face, it was a refreshing approach but it was undermined by the fact that they cut back to him way too often. I mean, what was the point of showing us this guy time and time again if there was actually nothing to see? Anyway, to conclude, even though I was definitely not the target audience, I thought it was still a decent watch though.

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 22 April 2022 08:46 (A review of Morbius)

Since this movie had received some really weak reviews, I didn’t expect much from it but Nick, my stepson, was still eager to check it out so we still went to see the damned thing in the movie theatre. Well, to be honest, I don’t think it was so bad after all. I mean, it’s not that it was great or anything like that and I probably did appreciate this movie more than it actually deserved because I was expecting something so bad . The fact that I wasn’t familiar with this character also helped and I thought this modern vampire was pretty neat. On top of that, Jared Leto was a perfect choice to play this character and I think he nailed it. Finally, the action scenes were not bad and visually even rather well done. However, unfortunately, I have to admit that pretty much nothing else really worked in this flick though. Indeed, it is pretty obvious that, with such an ambiguous character, they could have simply focus only on him, making him at the same time the main character and the villain of this origin story, which would have been an original and pretty cool approach. Unfortunately, instead, they turned his best friend Milo into the bad guy which was not only really generic, predictable but, above all, not interesting whatsoever. There was also a big fuss about the end-credits scenes but they didn’t really bother me. I mean, why should we blame Sony for trying to take advantage of the Multiverse introduced in the MCU? Of course, it apparently all didn’t make much sense (I have to admit that it has been a while since I saw ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ though) but Sony has never been and probably will never been as savvy as Marvel regarding the creation of their super-hero universe. Anyway, to conclude, I was probably too generous with my rating here but I think it is actually worth a look, at least, if you really like the genre.
