An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 9 July 2022 08:02 (A review of Dumplin')

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it was starring Jennifer Anniston and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, during the first minutes, I thought it would be pretty lame. Ā Fortunately, I was soon won over by Danielle Macdonald. Indeed, even though she managed to look like a normal average girl (which was already quite refreshing), she was still terribly charismatic which is such a difficult balance to achieve. As a matter of fact, Jennifer Anniston, even though she was the big star in this movie and therefore the main draw, was much less convincing but I have to admit that she wasnā€™t helped by the fact that her character didnā€™t have much screen time. Concerning the rest of the movie, the concept actually had some potential but even though the end-result was eventually not bad at all, I think it was just too scattered. Indeed, they never did commit to a specific tone as it was too light for a drama and it was too dark for a comedy. There were also just too many characters orbiting around the main character. In my opinion, it seemed to be a no-brainer to focus on this mother obsessed with pageants and her daughter who definitely did not have a pageant figure but, for some weird reason, you didnā€™t see the mother for most of the duration and, instead, they gave us a whole bunch of a rather half-baked characters. For example, I have nothing against Odeya Rush but she is pretty much a cheaper version of Mila Kunis and there was really nothing interesting about her character.Ā Eventually, it seemed that the makers had a solid basis but instead of digging deeper into this material, they pretty much chickened out and diluted the whole thing with some random uninteresting elements resulting in something maybe easier to swallow but also much more forgettable. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was a decent watch and it is actually worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 8 July 2022 05:17 (A review of Thor: Love and Thunder)

I already saw this movie when it was released in the theaters but, since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. The first time around, of course, like everyone else, I was really eager to see this new Thor sequel directed by Taika Waititi. Well, to be honest, in my opinion, the damned thing turned out to be rather overhyped, which was in fact already the case with ā€˜Ragnarokā€™. I mean, there is no denying that it was still a lot of fun to see Waititi going nuts with so many wild ideas and many of them were just hilarious (I will probably never forget these screaming goats). It was also really neat to see Jane Foster making her great return and, at last, Natalie Portman was giving something interesting to do in this franchise. Indeed, her character was so badass and it was pretty awesome to see her fighting side by side with Thor. I also enjoyed that they focused on their romantic relationship. Unfortunately, the wild approach chosen by Waititi also had its downside, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, as a result, the whole thing was just so random. For example, at the end of ā€˜Endgameā€™, you see Thor leaving with the Guardians of the Galaxy so I expected them to have some awesome adventure together but it seemed that they dropped this idea at some point and the Guardians were reduced to some special guests who showed up just during the first 10 mins. However, a bigger issue was that the story was nothing really amazing. I mean, they made a big fuss that Christian Bale was entering the MCU but even though his character, Gorr the God Butcher, had an awesome name and even though they took their time to establish his motivations, this character was just not really interesting after all. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didnā€™t completely blow me away, it was still an entertaining MCU instalment and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you enjoyed ā€˜Ragnarok' and Taika Waititiā€™s work in general.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 5 July 2022 09:05 (A review of Rapture-Palooza)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Anna Kendrick, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be pretty weak, Iā€™m afraid. I mean, I did like the way they displayed that the Rapture itself is a rather weak concept. Indeed, basically, it seemed pretty lame that this cute innocent couple would be doomed, even though they didnā€™t do anything wrong and simply because they didnā€™t believe in God. In fact, as a result, not only evil folks would remain, a lot of decent people would stay as well. The idea of making a black comedy around this apocalyptic end of the world was not bad either but, unfortunately, most of the jokes were just terribly lame.Ā Indeed, this movie was filled with some weird concepts such as zombies obsessing with lawn mowing, wraiths addicted to weed smoking, trash-talking crows, random meteorites, but none of these ideas was really funny.Ā One of the (very few) good jokes was about the fact that the mother of the main character was sent back after a single day because she apparently kept complaining. Concerning Anna Kendrick, as usual, she was not bad but it was rather bewildering that her character, in fact, not only her, but pretty much all the characters involved seemed to be so unfazed by this dramatic turn of events. To make things worse, the whole idea of the anti-christ chasing Anna Kendrickā€™s character for some booty call might have sounded funny on paper but it turned out to be so tedious after all and it was above all so misguided to spend so much time on this. Anyway, to conclude, I donā€™t mind some really dark offensive anti-religious comedy but this one was barely entertaining and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 3 July 2022 07:39 (A review of Into the Labyrinth)

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Dustin Hoffman and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, the damned thing turned out to be pretty weak and it was probably the weakest mindf*ck I had seen in a very long time. In fact, it was probably the best example of when this genre stops being entertaining and becomes seriously messy and, above all, really boring to watch. Sure, I was pretty tired when I watched the damned thing but the fact that I dozed off a couple of times was definitely not a good sign. First of all, even if he wasnā€™t really bad, Hoffman was completely miscast. I mean, I was the only non-Italian actor, it was only during his scenes that the dialogues were in English so, right from the start, it was pretty obvious that there was something fishy about this character which then ruined the twist towards the end. The rest of the movie was about the investigation of some random guy who was neither a cop or a private detective played by the great Toni Servillo who did manage to do more than Hoffman with this material. However, while this investigation was more developed than anything involving Hoffman, it was still nothing really intriguing though. Indeed, they kept giving some uninteresting details about Genkoā€™s private life which didnā€™t helpt. Above all, the biggest issue was that the plot was constantly fixating on some weird details which were, for most of the time, rather nonsensical. I read somewhere that this movie was probably some kind of modern Giallo (a genre Iā€™m very unfamiliar with) and, in this genre, it is rather common to have a vastly incoherent story as they focus more on the mood. Anyway, to conclude, it was still rather bewildering to see two great actors stuck in such a cheap and tedious thriller and I donā€™t think the damned thing was really worth a look.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 2 July 2022 07:48 (A review of De veroordeling)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it did win the Golden Calf for the Best Dutch movie of the year, I was quite eager to check it out. First of all, to be honest, even though I was already living in the Netherlands at the time, I have to admit that I had never heard of the Deventer murder case (itā€™s only years later, when I really mastered the language, that I started to watch/follow the Dutch news). Eventually, I have to admit that I did struggle a bit to follow all the details (I saw it in Dutch without subtitles) but, anyway, it was still quite a fascinating story and I really appreciated the realistic and sober approach. In fact, it did remind me of ā€˜Making a Murdererā€™, in fact, the damned thing actually made me wonder if Steven Avery might have been guilty all along after all. Eventually, the only thing that did bother me was how they manipulated the viewers to feel one way or another about Michael de Jong depending of the needs of the plot. Indeed, during the first half, you didnā€™t get a single real scene with the guy but instead, some short bits during which he was always presented as a rather dubious ominous figure. Of course, you could argue that it was how he was perceived by the general public but this argument didnā€™t work since they also gave a few scenes involving de Jong at home and these scenes also always made sure he did look suspicious. But then, during the second half, when the media and especially Maurice de Hond started to become completely obsessed with his possible involvement in this murder case, they suddenly completely flipped how de Jong was displayed in this movie as he suddenly became a soft-spoken mild-mannered man and this switch was just jarring. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of this awkward and manipulative approach, it was still a really solid thriller and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 30 June 2022 09:10 (A review of Can You Keep a Secret?)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Alexandra Daddario, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, like most romantic comedies, the concept turned out to be rather weak. On top of that, even though Daddario tried very hard to portray an average girl, Iā€™m afraid it was never really convincing. Once again, it had nothing to do with her performance, in fact, I think she was actually pretty good, itā€™s just that Iā€™m pretty sure that such a gorgeous girl would be noticed by every single guy each time she would walk into a room. The other thing that bothered me was that many scenes felt very flat. For example, what was this animated intro?!? I guess it was supposed to be charming and/or quirky but, even though it wasnā€™t ugly, it didnā€™t have any added value whatsoever. And, yet, somehow, the damned thing was still fairly entertaining. I guess it might had to do with the fact that I have a weak spot for the genre. Furthermore, Alexandra Daddario and Tyler Hoechlin had a solid chemistry together. I wish they did let him open up sooner though. For example, I really liked the fact that the guy was actually terrified of flying which would mean that her weird intimate rambling actually made him relax and forget about his own fear which was a touching idea. Unfortunately, this interesting and actually quite romantic idea came completely towards the end so it was pretty much wasted. Anyway, to conclude, I think I might have been too generous with my rating here but it was a decent watch and I guess it is worth a look but probably only if you really like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 28 June 2022 04:58 (A review of Upgrade)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it seemed to have a decent reputation and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. I have to admit that I knew so little about the movie before watching it that I didnā€™t even know that it was taking place in the future but since I have a weak spot for such SF movies, it was a nice surprise. Eventually, even if it was maybe nothing really original, I have to admit that I turned out to actually fairly entertaining after all. Indeed, by now, I have seen my share of slick futuristic features but it looked decent enough. And it was pretty much the same concerning this cybernetic upgrades, it was nothing really new but it didnā€™t bother me. Concerning Lorgan Marshall-Green, I have nothing against the guy but he always seemed to be some kind of cheap version of Tom Hardy. The comparison with Hardy gets even weirder when his new best friend in this movie turned out to be some kind of polite high-tech version of Venom. Anyway, in spite of my silly grudge against Marshall-Green, I have to admit that he was actually pretty good here. Indeed, he pretty much carried the whole thing on his shoulders and he was always quite convincing. Concerning the story itself, I wish that the whole attack at the beginning would have been random because the twist at the end was actually fairly predictable. However, I have to admit that it didnā€™t except such a seriously grim ending, Leigh Wannel definitely displayed some guts to end up this way and it was much appreciated. Anyway, to conclude, it turned out to to a really solid and entertaining B feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 26 June 2022 11:19 (A review of Dora and the Lost City of Gold)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t expecting much from this flick but since it was involving Benicio Del Toro and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the concept did seem terribly misguided, I have to admit that it was not bad or, at least, the end-result could have been much worse. Still, you might wonder who was the target audience for this movie though. Indeed, the Dora cartoon was aimed at very small children and the intro displayed how a real life action with this character should have actually looked like. However, you canā€™t really have some perilous adventure in the jungle with a 6 year old so they decided to show what Dora would look like if she would grow older which wasnā€™t a bad idea. As a result, she went to high-school which is, apparently, the biggest nightmare for any teenager but it was actually fun to see because, if this famous character would grow older, she would apparently be a seriously unadjusted teenager. However, at this point, the movie had completely drifted away from the original cartoon so they decided to bring her back to the jungle and this back-and-forth in the locations was rather awkward. I mean, at this point, guys, just take a decision and stick with it. Anyway, this final adventure in the jungle was decent enough, even if it was terribly derivative, especially the last bit which was completely lifted from ā€˜Indiana Jones and the Last Crusadeā€™. Finally, Isabella Merced was just so cute and charismatic and she tried really hard to sell this character but, to be honest, I have some doubts that this movie was such a great career choice for her. Anyway, to conclude, my rating might have been too generous here but I thought it was not bad and this movie could be a decent option if you want to entertain some young children.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 26 June 2022 06:53 (A review of To Be King)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was directed by Ben Sombogaart, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though Sombogaart is probably one of the most successful Dutch film directors at work nowadays, half of the movies he has directed were some family features which were all so lame, except maybe ā€˜Kruistocht in Spijkerbroekā€™ which was still nothing really amazing even if it won the Gouden Kalf of the Best Dutch movie of the year. Well, this movie was not an exception, Iā€™m afraid. First of all, the first thing that bothered me was how cheap the whole thing looked. Indeed, even though it was made 10 years ago, it felt like it was made in the 80ā€™s and the idea to add some war archive footage (obviously to save money) was rather pathetic and unconvincing. I understand that they probably had a micro-budget, especially compared to your average Hollywood production but, in this case, they should probably develop some other projects which donā€™t require a blockbuster budget. Concerning the story itself, I have to admit that I havenā€™t read the book which is, apparently, a huge classic among the Dutch youth, and I think it did have some potential. However, one again, I thought it was rather poorly handled here. For example, the introduction was weird and confusing. Who was this guy watching some TV? Where was the action taking place? Eventually, it turned out that it was some kind of fantasy land which still had all our modern gadgets but this mix was hard to sell and Sombogaart never managed to make it feel like a real place. Then, even though Mingus Dingelet and Abbey Hoes were both charismatic, their characters were barely developed. Above all, why on Earth would a 17 year old kid decide to become King and basically rule a nation? Eventually, thatā€™s probably what bothered me the most, this condescending tone towards the viewers, especially children. Anyway, to conclude, the damned thing turned out to be really weak and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 23 June 2022 08:59 (A review of Bill & Ted Face the Music)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, itā€™s always tricky to come up with a sequel 30 years later, in fact, it is often a rather misguided idea. Anyway, in this case, to be honest, I really struggled to care about the damned thing. The first thing that really bothered me was the whole concept that Missy had first married Billā€™s father, Tedā€™s father, and, for this movie, she was then marrying Tedā€™s brother?!? Sure, it was supposed to be funny but I thought it was actually seriously cringe-inducing. At least, it was a decent idea to send them to the future (but didnā€™t they already do it in the 2nd installment? I seriously canā€™t remember it thoughā€¦) but itā€™s too bad this future looked so lame and cheap. At least, I should praise Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter to be still completely committed to these characters after all these years but, as far as I'm concerned, moronic characters are almost never entertaining or funny. I have to admit that it has been years since I saw the previous movies and, while watching this new instalment, I was wondering how I could have ever enjoyed ā€˜Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventureā€™ in the first place. I guess I should re-watch this 80ā€™s cult-classic to see if it was indeed much better than anything else that came afterwards in this franchise. By the way, the idea of including their daughters also had some potential but they should have included them from the start and have them time-travelling with their dads, it would have been more entertaining and an interesting departure from the previous movies. Anyway, to conclude, even if the damned thing was harmless, I thought it was actually rather boring and I donā€™t think it is really worth a look, except if you are a die-hard fan of these characters.Ā
