Breaking the Waves
Notes: I’m pretty sure it was the first movie directed by von Trier which I have seen but, to be honest, I didn’t like it much. Indeed, when it was released, it was universally heralded so I had some pretty huge expectations but I thought it was rather disappointing. I mean, it is not that it was a bad movie, far from it. Indeed, I really enjoyed Lars von Trier’s directing and I could see why this movie was so loved. Furthermore, I have to admit, Emily Watson was absolutely brilliant in this. Indeed, her performance was really impressive, one of the best acting debut ever, and it is a real shame that she is so criminally underrated nowadays. Still, I didn’t really connect with this flick. Indeed, the tone was really really grim and gloomy (a trademark in Lars von Trier’s work) and I had a hard time to get into this story about this seemingly innocent woman being terribly mistreated by this *sshole. Above all, I really didn’t like by this ending with those bells in the sky… As a matter of fact, I even despised this ending, seriously. I don’t know, I’m not a religious man and I thought it was just an awful way to conclude all the unpleasant things that happen during this flick.

An average movie

“Following the incredibly enjoyable 'Pineapple Express', David Gordon Green must have thought that it would be a good idea to make another big-budget comedy. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a massive commercial and critical flop but I still wanted to check it out. This time, they went for a mix of” read more

“It has been a while since I have seen this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. To be honest, I never really understood why this movie was so popular. I mean, sure, it was not bad with a very nice cast involved. Above all, it was pretty awesome to see Angelina Jolie completely stealin” read more

A good movie

“I remember very well when this movie was released. Indeed, there was a huge buzz about it as it was a dream project for Martin Scorsese which he had dreamed to make for about 3 decades, it was definitely his most ambitious production so far and the expectations were huge. With this in mind, I was ob” read more

The Hunt (2012)
Original Title: 'Jagten' Country: Denmark Directed by: Thomas Vinterberg With: Mads Mikkelsen Plot: A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie. Note: Personally, I have always been intrigued about our current obsession about pedophilia and this movie gave me some really interesting insights about our current approach about such issues. Anyway, I thought it was a fascinating drama

A good movie

“Basically, it was one of these obscure French obscure movies that almost no one on this website have seen. In my case, the main reason I first wanted to watch the damned thing was because it was directed by Claude Miller. Indeed, Miller is not really famous or popular here in Listal but he was well ” read more

Independence Day
Notes: I remember, when this movie was released, it was pretty huge but since it looked really stupid, I really didn’t care for it. Eventually, after a few weeks after it was released in France, I received the VHS in the mail, sent by my buddies from the US. It was one of those American VHS with a cardboard box, instead of the plastic ones you had in Europe, and there was even a pretty neat hologram of the White House being blown up (I still have this box as a matter of fact). However, since I didn’t care for this flick and since my VHS player couldn’t play American videos, I took me 2 or 3 years to watch it until the VHS player finally broke down and was replaced. To my surprise, I thought it was not bad at all. To be fair, I don’t think it is something that requires multiple watches but, for a blockbuster, it is actually pretty entertaining. The point is that, indeed, the whole thing is kind of stupid but the makers were fully aware of this and didn’t handle this too seriously. As a result, it was actually quite fun to behold and the special effects were pretty neat, even 20 years later. For Will Smith, it was a step towards mega stardom and the guy was immensely charismatic in this.

A good movie

“Seriously, I’m still pissed off about this. Indeed, I was glad that I managed to find a UK double DVD with the director's cut for a decent prize but, for some reasons, they didn’t provide any subtitles and, as a result, I have to admit that I couldn’t completely follow the dialogues. An average movie

“Since my wife has always been a fan of John Travolta, we ended up watching this movie together. Personally, I always thought that Travolta was a decent actor but even after he made his come-back with ā€˜Pulp Fiction’, the guy always kept making some dubious career choices. A good movie

“I already saw this movie (in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released) but it was such a long time ago so I thought I might as well check it out again. Notes: This movie seems to be nowadays rather forgotten but I think it is quite a shame since it is actually one of the best movies directed by Ang Lee, arguably one of the best directors of the last 20 years. First of all, there was a stellar cast (Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes) and they all delivered some really solid performances. Furthermore, it is very rare to see a movie like this one managing to develop grown-ups AND teenagers and, for once, you get to see the difficulties to connect with your teenage children when you are facing yourself some personal challenges. The first time I watched it, I was about 17 years old and, now, I’m 34, married with children, and the fact that I have been through both life stages made me able to appreciate even more this movie.

“To be honest, the only movies I really loved from Lars von Trier were ā€˜Dogville’ and ā€˜Manderlay’ and I was really disappointed that he didn’t finish his trilogy with the planned ā€˜Wasington’ which was unfortunately cancelled. Instead, von Trier decided to make this movie which was somet” read more
