A good movie

[Link removed - login to see]To be honest, I didn't really know what to expect from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Dwayne Johnson, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it is not very often that you see a major action star like Dwayne Johnson starring in a drama and, quite surprisingly, I actually enjoyed the damned thing. I mean, sure, the introduction was rather messy but then they displayed the life of the youth in this kind of neighboorhood and how merciless and hopeless their life can turn out to be. So, when they all got involved in this (US) football thing, I was really believing that they were willing to do something else than shooting at each other. They managed to show us that those kids never have had any opportunity, except selling drugs, and, here, they finally got to do something else and it worked. Of course, the whole thing was still rather stereotypical, you wonder if they could become friends so quickly and some of those kids behaved completely different from one moment to another but it was inherent to the genre. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was nothing mind-blowing, I thought it was actually a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 10 June 2012 06:22 (A review of Funny Girl)

Even though I'm not a big fan of Barbra Streisand, since she won the Oscar for the Best actress for this movie, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, when you think about it, could you imagine Christina Aguilera winning an Oscar for 'Burlesque', Britney Spears for 'Crossroads' or Mariah Carey with 'Glitter'? It seems that, nowadays, we shouldn't have huge expectations towards such movies. even though, Jennifer Hudson did manage to win the Oscar for 'Dreamgirls'. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I thought it was not bad. Indeed, the songs were pretty good and I have to admit that Barbra Streisand did deliver a solid performance. Unfortunately, like most musicals, the story turned out to be nothing mind-blowing. Furthermore, it was also rather long (around 140 minutes) and the whole thing was rather slow so I got rather bored at some point. Of course, since I'm not a fan of Barbra Streisand and since I'm not a fan of musicals either, I was not really the targeted audience and that could explain why I didn't like it very much. Anyway, to conclude, I still it was a well made musical and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 10 June 2012 04:20 (A review of Iron Man)

I already saw this movie (in fact, I even saw it in the movie theater when it was released) but since I have now Disney+, I thought I might as well rewatch the whole MCU. First of all, nowadays, nobody would argue that Robert Downey Jr. was not the right guy to portray Tony Stark. However, many have forgotten that, because of his everlasting drug problem, Downey Jr. was blacklisted for many years and it was at the time really a big gamble from Jon Favreau. Fortunately, this gamble paid off and this flick was a critical and financial success. It was the living proof that a comic-book adaptation didn't need to be gloomy like 'The Dark Knight' to be good. Indeed, it was easily one of the most fun super-hero flick I have ever seen. So, obviously, Robert Downey Jr. completely stole the show with a pitch perfect performance but the rest of the cast was also pretty good (Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Jon Favreau). And, of course, the special effects were quite awesome but with such a huge budget, that was rather expected. But there was also a good pace and, even though there were plenty of special effects shots, they still managed to develop enough the characters and, as a result, the story was quite compelling to watch. My only critic would be that the story was still too predictable and generic which prevented the whole thing from becoming a real masterpiece. Anyway, to conclude, even if it might not be an actual masterpiece, it is still one of the best super-hero movies out there, even after all these years and after all these movies released within the MCU, and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 10 June 2012 03:07 (A review of Bobby Z)

Nowadays, I have Netflix and Popcorn and not only I have since then an endless selection of movies to choose from but, as a result, I have become slightly more picky regarding the movies I watch. Before, I used to watch pretty much anything as long as it was starring one or two actors I was interested in and, as a result, I would sometimes end up watching some really obscure features. This movie was a perfect example and it was indeed was pretty average. Basicallly, it was one of those straight-to-dvd flicks with poor acting, directing and storyline. I was above all rather amazed by Paul Walker who played the lead here. I mean, I have to admit it, the guy had the looks but, man, as a actor, he was rather clueless and this flick was a good example. The fact that the whole thing was ratheer poorly written didn't help. For example, the character portrayed was supposed to be some kind of loser but then, out of the blue, he was riding a bike, a horse, taking down about 20 henchmen with his bare hands and he also became some kind of sharp shooter. However, even though the whole thing was pretty average, it was not one of the worst movies I have seen, and I do think that the story actually had some potential. Still, it is pretty average and not really worth a look.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 10 June 2012 01:45 (A review of Piranha 3D)

Before watching this flick, I wasn't expecting much but, at least, I thought it would be a fun watch. First of all, I have to give some credit to Alexandre Aja. Indeed, I heard about the damned thing and I thought there would be loads of boobs and gore but they really went all the way, with lots of nudity and some nasty gore scenes. Still, even though my step-son apparently really loved it, I can't say I really cared for this movie though. Indeed, I was eventually rather bored during the whole thing and, as far as I was concerned, it was never really funny or scary. To make things worse. I didn't care about any of the characters so it was rather difficult to get into the story. Of course, I know, I shouldn't take this movie seriously but, still, if you compare it to 'Jaws, it was rather weak. Like I said before, my step-son who is 15 years old really enjoyed it and I'm maybe too old to appreciate a movie with naked chicks and blood-thirsty fishes. I have nothing against these things but I still need a compelling story and some more or less interesting characters. Anyway, to conclude, it was rather boring and it is not really worth a look in my opinion.

A good movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 7 June 2012 09:31 (A review of Titus)

Since I consider Anthony Hopkins one of the best actors alive, I was really eager to watch this flick. It is also Julie Taymor's directing debut which made this movie even more intriguing to me. Eventually, it turned out to be one of the weirdest and least accessible Shakespeare adaptation I have ever seen and, yet, somehow, I did like it. It is always tricky when the makers decide to keep the original dialogs and, usually, it doesn't work for me but, this time, I thought it was quite fascinating. Like many people have pointed out, if you haven't read the text (I didn't either), the whole thing is pretty hard to follow and that's why I wasn't quite completely blown away. But, I liked it, thanks to the directing, the baroque costums and set-dressing and the awazing cast (Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Alan Cumming). It was above all a treat to see Hopkins who doesn't get to play the lead very often nowadays, such a shame. If you don't understand the words, it doesn't really matter since his body language is enough to tell you the whole thing. To conclude, it is obviously an acquired taste but it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 7 June 2012 09:11 (A review of Force 10 from Navarone)

To be honest, I wasnโ€™t sure what to expect from this flick but since Harrison Ford is one of my favorite actors, I definitely had to watch this flick at some point. โ€˜Star Warsโ€™ had been released just the year before and even though Ford was already a hot item, at this point, he hadn't reach complete stardom yet. Well, concerning the movie itself, it was a decent WII action flick but it was still rather forgettable. In fact, I saw 'The Guns of Navarone' and, to be honest, this sequel didn't have much to do with the original. Indeed, there was only one actor from the first movie and the action didnโ€™t even take place in Navarone at all. Furthermore, even though the story was rather entertaining, it was still full of nonsense. For example, the way Carl Weathers got involved in the mission was just ridiculous and there were many other scenes during which I was just shaking my head. So, it was obviously not a realistic flick but it was still entertaining, especially at the end when they destroyed the bridge. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was not one of the best WWII movies I have seen, it was not bad and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 6 June 2012 10:50 (A review of We Own the Night)

Since I really loved James Gray's debut, 'Little Odessa', I have watched all his flicks and I was expecting a lot from this one. Furthermore, it is one of the most catchy title I have ever seen, the cast was quite awesome and the story seemed intriguing enough. Eventually, it turned out to be his most disappointing movie so far... I don't mean that it was bad, absolutely not. The directing was awesome as usual, the cast (Joaquin Phoenix, Eva Mendes, Mark Wahlberg, Robert Duvall) was pretty good and they all delivered some decent performances, especially Joaquin Phoenix (thank God he dropped the whole retirement/hip-hop career/hoax thing....). The main issue was with the story. I mean, it starts out as a gripping gritty crime drama with the 2 brothers standing each at the opposite side of the law and I was rather hooked but then, in the second half, the whole thing just turned into some big nonsense. Indeed, after Wahlberg gets shot, Phoenix who used to be some lowlife gangster, suddenly became instantly a cop and goes into a quest to avenge his brother and father and eventually kills a whole bunch of bad guys... It was really preposterous and, honestly, I kind of lost interest in the whole thing afterwards. Still, it remains a very well made crime drama and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in James Gray's work like I do.

An average movie

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 6 June 2012 10:36 (A review of Land of the Lost)

Since this movie was literally destroyed by the critics and since it was a huge flop at the box-office, I wasn't expecting much from the damned thing. And indeed, it turned out to be a real mess but, to be honest, I have to admit that it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. First of all, I have never seen the TV-show it was based on so I don't know if it was faithfull or not. Basically, I thought it was never consistent enough. For example, some of the special effects were sometimes actually pretty good but then, some others were really lame and pathetic. It was the same issue with the jokes, there were a few good ones here and there but also many misfires. And it was the same thing with Will Ferrell, sometimes he made me laugh but, pretty often, he was just rather obnoxious. On the positive side, I think it was a neat concept to put Will Ferrell in such a wacky adventure and, like I said before, it was definitely not one of the worst flicks I have ever seen. Anyway, to conclude , it was still an average adventure flick mixed with Ferrell's humor and it is not really worth a look.

A classic

Posted : 12 years, 6 months ago on 6 June 2012 08:55 (A review of One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961))

It is a huge classic and I have seen it many times with my daughter (who will become 6 years old tomorrow by the way). Honestly, it is not one of my favorite Disney classics but it is still fairly enjoyable though. My favorite scene was the introduction when it was focusing on Pongo's thoughts. Eventually, I wish they had kept the same tone for the rest of the movie but, unfortunately, it then became a decent familly feature but not much more than that, I'm afraid. Of course, the other masterstroke was Cruella De Vil who would become one of the most emblematic vilains created by Disney. Arguably, she was the best bad guy those guys have invented and it is probably my favorite one. I mean, she looked awesome, her clothes looked great and even her car was badass. Unfortunately, on the other hand, I thought that all the dogs were rather underwhelming. I mean, sure, they were all cute and all but they definitely lacked some personality, especially when you compare them to the awesome Cruella. That's the big difference between the old Disney classics and the recent Pixar efforts. Even though the old Disneys are fine, they were definitely made for young children, whereas the Pixar stuff is enjoyable for the kids and grown-ups alike. Still, it remains a decent old classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
