A very good movie

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 26 December 2022 08:40 (A review of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery )

Of course, since I really enjoyed ā€˜Knives Outā€™, I was really eager to check this sequel. Well, even though I have a little voice constantly telling me Iā€™m actually overrating these movies, I have to admit that I actually really enjoyed the damned thing though. First of all, for Daniel Craig, if he was ever scared to get stuck by James Bond like so many actors before him, well, he couldnā€™t have wished a better rebound than Benoit Blanc. Indeed, it is so obvious that Craig has such a blast with the character and I thought he was once again so damned entertaining (However, it is apparently not everyoneā€™s cup of tea since my wife thought he was awful in ā€˜Knives Outā€™). Once again, they had also a all-star cast involved (Edward Norton, Janelle MonĆ”e, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Madelyn Cline, Ethan Hawke, Hugh Grant,ā€¦) and they were all game. Of course, you could argue that they were all playing some really vapid and dislikeable characters so I can understand that if you didnā€™t care much about them. Concerning the story, I wonder if some viewers were actually capable of finding out what was actually going on early on. I certainly didnā€™t, I was expecting someone completely different to get killed and the damned thing was just so intricate but thatā€™s what made this movie Ā so entertaining. Anyway, at the end of the day, the conclusion, at least for me, was that, even if you become super successful and super rich in the process, it doesnā€™t automatically mean that you are super smart which was pretty awesome. Was it better than its predecessor? I donā€™t think so but it was definitely at the same level. The brilliant thing done by Rian Johnson was that there were so many similarities and, yet, both movies were still quite different. In this case, I still wonder why the action was taking place during the COVID pandemic since it had such very little impact on the story though. Anyway, to conclude, it was once again really fun to see Benoit Blanc cracking a new case and the damned thing is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 25 December 2022 08:34 (A review of The Great Train Robbery)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie but since there was a nice cast involved, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, first of all, I have always had a weak spot for the heist genre and a vintage one like this movie are quite rare which was already pretty neat. I wish that they did stick more on how the actual robbery took place but, still, everything that took place seemed to be quite feasible which made the whole thing much more compelling (itā€™s too bad though that the scene during which they were exactly timing the actions of Donald Sutherland was actually much longer than the time allowed to them). There were also a couple of stunts which seemed actually quite dangerous, I mean, you could clearly see that it was Connery himself on top of that train and not some CGI character and, as a result, it definitely made this scene quite thrilling to watch. Concerning the cast, Sean Connery was pretty much pitch-perfect and this guy was basically born to play such characters. Donald Sutherland was not bad either as his right arm and Lesley-Ann Down never looked more lovely but, to be honest, their characters could have been more developed. In fact, you could say the same about the main character but Connery did manage to compensate this by being so damned charismatic. Concerning the tone, it was always quite entertaining but the tone was maybe too light and the last scene was probably too much. Anyway, to conclude, even if it might not be a masterpiece, I think it must be the best movie directed by Michael Crichton that I have seen so far and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A good movie

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 24 December 2022 09:06 (A review of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949))

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this movie but since it seemed to have a decent reputation (it is indeed included in the ā€˜They Shoot Pictures, Donā€™t They?ā€™ list among other things), I thought I might as well check it out. Well, first of all, I saw it on the BBC without subtitles so I have to admit that I did struggle a little bit to follow the dialogues. Anyway, Iā€™m usually not a big fan of such vintage Westerns and this one turned out to be some kind of romantic love letter to the US cavalry. In fact, if there would have been enough Indians alive to fight at the time, it could have been almost described as a propaganda film. Still, I have to admit that the damned thing was not bad at all. Personally, I enjoyed above all the numerous horse chases which were so well made and quite thrilling to watch. Furthermore, I have to admit that Iā€™m not really familiar with John Wayneā€™s work but he did deliver here a solid performance. Indeed, it was neat that he wasnā€™t playing a character who was way too young for him and I thought he was playing for once someone close to his age. Eventually, I was really surprised that his character was actually 20 years older than Wayne was at the time (in fact, he was even younger than Iā€™m today which seems incredible). It shows how convincing the guy was and it is deservedly considered as one of his best performances. Concerning the other characters, Quincannon was fun but I had a harder time to care about a rather half-baked love triangle (the reason why this movie got this title in the first place) involving a young woman and two young officers, even though I have to admit that Joanne Dru was really lovely. Anyway, to conclude, it turned out to be a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 24 December 2022 08:12 (A review of American Traitor: The Trial of Axis Sally)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t sure what to expect from the damned thing but since it was starring Al Pacino, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though, like many other recent movies starring the legendary actor, it did receive some rather abysmal reviews, I thought it was not so bad though. Basically, pretty much like ā€˜Resistanceā€™, another WWII movie starring Jesse Eisenberg I saw the day before, I think it was a very interesting story which suffered from very poor execution. At least, Al Pacino did deliver a solid performance, even if his character was not developed whatsoever. However, the rest of the cast, especially Meadow Williams, was really weak though. I wonder if I saw her before and she apparently specialises in such cheap flicks. Anyway, even she did look good, she did basically nothing interesting with this character. Concerning the story, they chose a really straightforward approach which wasnā€™t a bad idea and I would have to agree with the outcome. However, in my opinion, they did miss something though. Indeed, they kept leaning on the fact that she was probably a victim herself but, even if Mildred Gillars didnā€™t deserve to die for playing a propaganda character on the radio, Iā€™m not sure if she was completely innocent though. Indeed, sure, she didnā€™t write her text and obviously couldnā€™t quit her job but what did she believe in? I mean, was she a Nazi after all? As such, since you could never be sure where she stood on this matter, I still think that she was to be considered a traitor and her jail sentence was deserved. Anyway, to conclude, I guess I might have been too generous with my rating here but, in my opinion, it was an interesting watch and I think it is worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 23 December 2022 09:37 (A review of Resistance)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Jesse Eisenberg, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it turned out to be an interesting story, the movie itself was not really good, Iā€™m afraid. Indeed, it seems that they took the wrong approach to this otherwise interesting material. First of all, the intro with Ed Harris was seriously lame and completely useless. Above all, even though Marcel Marceau became a war hero because he helped 100ā€™s of children to escape Nazi France, it was never really the focus of this movie and such an actual escape took place way too late during the movie. To make things worse, Klaus Barbie actually figured out what they were doing and who was helping these kids during their very first rescue operation so how did Marceau manage to rescue more children afterwards? Instead, the movie spent way too much time focusing on the main character flirting with some random girl, something that probably never happened at all. There was even another even more half-baked romance involving his brother and the sister of the girl he had a crush on. Concerning Jesse Eisenberg, I thought he did deliver a solid performance though but you might wonder what an actual mime could have done with this part. On the other hand, they probably needed someone more famous than some obscure mime actor to be able to bankroll this movie. Eventually, I was actually above all impressed by Matthias Schweighƶfer who was really convincing playing the infamous Klaus Barbie. However, it was rather weird the way they introduced this character as he randomly showed up in some clandestine gay bar in Berlin which was something completely unrelated with the rest of the movie. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was not bad and I think it is worth a look but there is no doubt that it could have been so much better.

A very good movie

Posted : 1 year, 10 months ago on 22 December 2022 10:29 (A review of RRR (Rise Roar Revolt))

Since I kept hearing some really good things about this movie, I thought I should finally watch the damned thing at some point. First of all, itā€™s too bad that Netflix did provide only the version dubbed in Hindi instead of the original version in Telugu. Still, it turned out to be such a f*cking blast, I have seen around 7000 movies and I had never seen anything like this. Seriously, it was probably one of the craziest movies I have ever seen. Basically, they took so many different genres such as action, romance, comedy, drama, historical epic, patriotic propaganda,ā€¦ and cranked up all these genres to the max and, even though it should have been a total disaster, it actually worked so well. On top of that, it featured some of the most exhilarating action scenes I have seen and, without ā€˜Avatar: The Way of Waterā€™, it would have been hands-down visually the most impressive movie released in 2022. It also featured one of the most fascinating bromances. Eventually, I still think that there were a (few) dull moments though. Above all, I didnā€™t care much for the half-baked romance between Bheem and Jenny and it was pretty obvious that this romance was added just so that Bheem could find Malli in a completely random way. In fact, since he knew that Malli had been abducted by the governor and his wife, I donā€™t understand why it was supposed to be so difficult to find Malliā€™s location. Still, it was some minor flaw and the whole thing was just so freaking entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, even if I donā€™t think it was a masterpiece (it wasnā€™t far from it though), I really enjoyed the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are oblivious about Indian movies (like me) and want to discover them.Ā

A good movie

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 21 December 2022 11:01 (A review of Pinocchio)

To be honest, after the really useless live-action version released by Disney this year, I canā€™t say I was really dying to see again another version of this famous tale, especially so soon. However, a new movie directed by Guillermo Del Toro is always a big event, especially when it is a passion project like this one on which he has been working for more than 10 years. Well, first of all, there is no doubt that the damned thing was visually really neat and if youā€™re into stop-motion, this flick is definitely a must-see. Concerning the story itself, it was pretty cool that they did extend the introduction and displayed in the process the relationship between Geppetto and his deceased son, Carlo. They also combined some elements from Frankensteinā€™s story. As a result, Geppetto actually really freaked out when Pinocchio came to life and it took him a while to accept him and eventually love him. It really deferred from the other adaptations but I thought it was a really interesting approach. For some reason, the action was also taking place in the 30ā€™s in Fascist Italy which was not necessarily a bad idea but Iā€™m not sure if it really had such an interesting added value. Unfortunately, even though Del Toro did tweak the story a little bit, in my opinion, it was still the same old tale that I have seen so many times by now and I find it hard to really care at this point. Above all, I think they should have dropped as many details as possible from the Disney classic adaptation to make sure that this movie could really stand on its own. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didnā€™t really blow me away, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Guillermo Del Toroā€™s work.Ā

A very good movie

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 20 December 2022 11:58 (A review of Avatar: The Way of Water)

In 2009, I saw ā€˜Avatarā€™ with my step-kids in the movie theater when it was released. Back then, they were only 12 and 15 years old. Yesterday, we went to see this sequel together (with their little sister as well) and it was just awesome to share again this experience with them. On top of that, this time, we saw it in IMAX 3D (something I always wished we did with the first instalment) and the damned thing was just visually so impressive. Seriously, some people might complain that itā€™s too long but I thought the time passed by really fast. What I enjoyed the most was probably the fact that James Cameron several times actually completely ignored the plot to focus instead on this fascinating world. It was also a great move to focus on a completely different Na'vi tribe living on the shores of some islands. Finally, the last thing that really worked was the fact that they didnā€™t focus only on Jake Sully but on his whole family instead. As a result, there was not really a main character but several characters in the spotlight and I was positively surprised by how complex they were portrayed. Indeed, as displayed in this movie, Jake Sully was still a charismatic leader but also an authoritarian jerk and Neytiri was still a fearless warrior but also apparently a rather psychotic mama bear. Still,Ā in spite of what some reviewers might argue, I don't think this movie was such an improvement on its predecessor. Indeed,Ā back then, the first installment was so mind-blowing above all because it was so much ahead of the game and, in my opinion, it had at least a 10 years lead on the rest of the competition. However, this movie, even if it was more than a decent sequel, didnā€™t feel like such a game-changer after all. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didnā€™t completely blow me away like ā€˜Avatarā€™ did so many years ago, I still really loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A bad movie

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 18 December 2022 02:10 (A review of Cats)

Obviously, I didnā€™t expect much from this movie but I have to admit that I was quite curious to see if it was really so bad after all. Well, first of all, it was slightly difficult to judge this movie as Iā€™m completely unfamiliar with the musical it was based on. I mean, putting aside the countless issues regarding this adaptation, it still seemed to be a really weird and surreal musical focusing on some anthropomorphic cats. The lack of plot is basically hidden behind a non-stop succession of songs but, to be honest, it did seem narratively rather weak. Anyway, even if Iā€™m still not convinced by the actual potential of the original classic musical, there is no doubt that they completely botched this adaptation though. Indeed, instead of wearing some silly cat costumes, they thought it would be a great idea to go full-on CGI but the end-result was just awful. The CGI team complained that the production had been rushed but, even if they had been given more time, it would still have been ugly as hell and the concept was just completely misguided. On top of that, not only the characters looked seriously weird but also all their surroundings and background looked completely fake as well. At some point, Spielberg was actually trying to adapt it as an animated feature which might have been a better idea. Coming back on the CGI, they also took the opportunity to completely white-wash Francesca Hayward. Indeed, even though Hayward is a beautiful black woman, she actually played the whitest cat of the bunch which was again another misguided choice. Concerning the songs, I have to admit that they were not bad but, like the rest of the movie, they all felt weird and surreal. On the other hand, I still think that Jennifer Hudsonā€™s solo song was actually quite beautiful and actually saved this movie from becoming a complete disaster. Anyway, to conclude, the damned thing does deserve its abysmal reputation and you should definitely avoid it.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 1 year, 11 months ago on 16 December 2022 08:32 (A review of Gyllene Tider: Parkliv)

With only 49 viewers on IMDb, it might be the most obscure movie I have seen so far. However, even if it was really obscure, since it was directed by Lasse Hallstrƶm and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I have to admit that I had never heard of Gyllene Tider before and, while watching the damned thing, it seemed that it was mostly popular with young Swedish girls going from 12 to 16 years. However, it was apparently one of the biggest Swedish bands ever. Concerning their music, I have to admit that that it was technically not bad at all, even pretty catchy. Indeed, during the first notes, I thought it could be actually really good, at least, more than ABBA which is fine but not really my thing. However, as soon as they started to sing, Iā€™m afraid they lost me. Eventually, I didnā€™t care much about the singing and itā€™s probably exclusively for Swedish speakers. Of course, pretty much like everyone else back in the 80ā€™s, in spite of what my wife might argue, they looked pretty cheesy, especially the lead singerā€™s hairdo. By the way, I discovered afterwards that, Per Gessle, the lead singer, would manage later on some major international success with Roxette so the guy definitely had some skills. There were also some interviews but those were so flat and barely informative, it was really a missed opportunity. The only interesting bit was when they tackled the fact that they had such a clean image, much more than your average rockā€™n roll band. Anyway, to conclude, even if I might never listen to this band ever again, it was still a decent watch, even if it is worth a look probably only for the fans.Ā
