An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 13 December 2010 01:05 (A review of Sudden Death)

When I was a kid, I was a huge fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme and I saw all the movies he made at the beginning of his career. Eventually, at around 14 years old, I started to get interested in other kind of movies and I discovered that his movies were not so good after all. However, afterwards, he did make a few movies that seemed to be decent, like this one, so I was really eager to check it out. In fact, a year before, Jean-Claude Van Damme already worked with Peter Hyams for ā€˜Timecopā€™ which turned out to be his biggest box-office success but I thought it was in fact terribly disappointing. Well, even though this follow-up was apparently a box-office flop when it was released, it turned out to be one of my favorite movies starring Ā Van Damme ('Bloodsportā€™ remains on the 1st spot). I mean, sure the whole thing was basically a complete rip-off of 'Die Hard' but, I thought it was actually rather well done and for once I thought that JCVD was quite convincing. To conclude, it is definitely not a masterpiece whatsoever but if you look for some brainless entertainment, I think it is worth a look.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 13 December 2010 12:58 (A review of Soul Survivors)

Honestly, I didnā€™t expect much from this flick but since there was a decent cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Indeed, not only this movie has a really poor rating, I also read that, apparently, of all the movies he has made so far, Casey Affleck is the most ashamed about this one. I can see why... The funny thing is that I donā€™t think Affleck was actually so bad in this movie and his performance didn't bother me so much. Indeed, the rest of the cast (Wes Bentley, Eliza Dushku and Luke Wilson) who seemed at least promising were even worse than him. Seriously, they were are all really terrible and the worst performance was probably the one delivered by Luke Wilson... I know, I make it sound as if it was awful and it was indeed pretty weak but the funny thing is that the concept behind the movie was actually pretty decent but it was unfortunately really poorly developed. It didnā€™t help that the whole thing looked really cheap as well. Anyway, to conclude, the acting was way below average and the whole thing seemed to be a missed opportunity so I can't possibly recommend this movie.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 12 December 2010 11:45 (A review of An American Haunting)

To be honest, I wasnā€™t really expecting much from this flick, especially since it had a rather poor rating on Imdb, but since I always had a weak spot for Donald Sutherland, I thought I might as well give it a try. Eventually, even though I usually donā€™t care much about the genre (in my opinion, ā€˜The Exorcistā€™ is in fact one of the most overrated movies ever made), I thought that this movie was actually fairly entertaining and it was above all rather well directed. Unfortunately, I was not really convinced by the rather far-fetched twist at the end but it is unfortunately inherent to the genre, Iā€™m afraid. Furthermore, the inclusion of the modern story didnā€™t add much and could have been easily completely removed if you ask me. Still, it was really neat to see again the lovely Rachel Hurd-Wood. Indeed, it was her 2nd movie after ā€˜Peter Panā€™ but, unfortunately, the movies she made afterwards became more and more obscure and it seems she never managed to really breakthrough in spite of her interesting potential. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, even though it was not very original, I thought it was rather well done and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like this genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 12 December 2010 11:42 (A review of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader)

For some reasons, I actually ended up watching this flick in the movie theater when it was released. I guess there wasnā€™t much else to see it at the time and I probably thought it could be a decent watch for my step-son. First of all, I never understood what happened with this franchise. Indeed, when the 1st installment was released, it was a huge success and, pretty much like everyone else, I though it would be the 3rd huge fantasy franchise, next to ā€˜The Lord of the Ringsā€™ and ā€˜Harry Potterā€™. However, ā€˜Prince Caspianā€™ didnā€™t do as well as expected and this movie would be their final attempt. Eventually, this movie was even less successful and it was pretty much the end of this franchise. Anyway, in spite of all this, I thought it was rather well made with some decent action scenes. Still, to really enjoy it, you shouldn't analyse too much the story or the characters involved since it remains all rather shallow. To conclude, even though it was not challenging at all, I thought it was still fairly entertaining and I think it is worth a look, especially if you have enjoyed the previous installments in this franchise.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 11 December 2010 03:49 (A review of Battle of Britain)

I wasnā€™tĀ  really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Michael Caine, I thought I might as well check it out. Apparently, Roger Ebert really despised the whole thing in one of his earliest reviews but I didnā€™t think it was bad at all. Basically, it is one of theses typical war features dealing with a whole bunch of characters, each of them with their own separate sub-plot. So, obviously, it was nothing really original, thatā€™s for sure, but there was a really neat cast involved (Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, Christopher Plummer, Ian McShane, Michael Redgrave, Robert Shaw) and I really enjoyed the historical details provided in this movie. Still, even though the plane fights were well made, they still became kind of boring after a while. The other issues is that there were just too many character involved and, as a result, none of them was properly developed. Seriously, sometimes, some of these characters would be gone and you would eventually never found out exactly what happened to them. To conclude, even though it didnā€™t really blow me away, I thought it was still a decent watch and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 11 December 2010 03:42 (A review of X-Men Origins: Wolverine)

I actually already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had this movie on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Obviously, this movie definitely has a lousy reputation and it is usually considered as being easily the weakest movie in the X-Men franchise. Well, even though I have to agree that it wasn't really good, I don't think it was really so bad after all. First of all, Wolverine remains the most charismatic X-Men character and it made sense to make this first (and so far) only spin-off about this guy. I also enjoyed the fact that they went way back in time when he was just a kid and I wish they spent more time developing his past, especially since it went other 100s of years. Unfortunately, they skipped through his past way too quickly and, instead, we got a rather lame story taking place probably in the 80's, supposedly explaining what actually happened to Logan. Liev Schreiber, one of the most underrated actors at work nowadays, was also pretty good but his character didn't make much sense in my opinion. Indeed, Sabretooth was already in 'X-Men' but he never mentioned at the time that he knew Wolverine and, in this movie, we found out that they were actually brothers. By the way, it won't be the first time that they will completely mess up the continuity in this franchise, in fact , it will pretty much happen almost constantly from the moment that they will reboot the damned thing with 'X-Men: First Class'. Eventually, it's too badĀ the whole thing didn't really work outĀ because it really had some potential. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its poor reputation, I still think it is worth a look though, especially if you are a fan of the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 10 December 2010 07:44 (A review of River Queen)

Basically, there was a time when I would go to a video game shop (which is now closed) and I would buy there on a regular basis 5 DVDs for 5 euros and, sometimes, since I would be missing 1 DVD, I would pick up pretty much anything at random just to reach 5 movies. Anyway, following this amazing process, I ended up watching some rather obscure movies and this one was definitely one of them. Eventually, I thought it was not bad at all and I especially enjoyed the historical and cultural background which were very interesting. Furthermore, Ā the performances were pretty good as well, Samantha Morton is definitely one of the most underrated actresses I know but, to be honest, even though it was rather unexpected to see Kiefer Sutherland in a production like this one, Iā€™m not sure he really belonged here but at least, he did try. Unfortunately, the story was sometimes rather murky and the whole thing didn't seem to really know where to go. It's too bad because it had some potential. Still, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

An average movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 9 December 2010 10:08 (A review of Drillbit Taylor)

There was a point, during the mid-2000ā€™s, that Judd Apatowā€™s comedies were pretty much ruling the box-office and, 10 years later, he is still doing some decent business, even if he is so dominating anymore. Anyway, this movie seemed to be his first box-office plot but since that I have a weak spot for Owen Wilson, I still wanted to check it out. I didnā€™t know this but this was in fact the very last movie written by John Hughes before he died in 2009 but the script was so modified that he requested to have his name removed and to be credited as someone else. Anyway, after all, I thought it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, Owen Wilson gave his typical performance but he was quite entertaining and those 3 kids were actually pretty great but, unfortunately, Ā the story didn't really work out fine. Indeed, to make fun of homeless people was something rather tricky and the whole thing felt sometimes rather misguided and not really funny. It's too bad because it had some potential. Still, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent comedy and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A gorgeous movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 8 December 2010 06:57 (A review of Tangled)

To be honest, even though I didn't really expect it, I have to admit that I was really charmed by this flick and, in my opinion, it is actually one of the very best fairy tales delivered by Disney. First of all, it was just a gorgeous animated movie. Indeed, if I recally it correctly, it was the first time that Disney used this kind of CGI animation which really looked like something hand-drawn and the end-result was just really amazing (there were even some neat effects with the 3D version). However, I have to admit that the story was still missing something to become truly remarkable and, after all, it remains a rather generic fairy tale but it was still really entertaining with some neat characters. On top of that, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider had some great chemistry and they formed one of the best romantic couples ever delivered by Disney. Even though it did some decent business at the box-office, this movie didn't really turn out to be a smashing success and it would be thanks to 'Frozen' that Disney would have again a huge hit, breaking all kinds of records but, to be honest, I thought that this one was much superior to 'Frozen' . Anyway, obviously , this movie didn't ever really reach the greatness of the Pixar classics but it was still a really good animated feature and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Ā

A sweet movie

Posted : 14 years, 1 month ago on 7 December 2010 08:07 (A review of Griffin & Phoenix)

I wasnā€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Amanda Peet, I thought I might as well check it out. By the way, what happened with this actress? Even though she keeps working, we donā€™t hear much from her anymore but it is probably due to the fact she has reached her 40ā€™s which means pretty much the end for most of the actresses. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, I have to admit it, I was actually positively surprised. Indeed, in my opinion, Amanda Peet and Dermot Mulroney were both pretty good and they had some great chemistry together. Concerning the story itself, it was not bad but I was definitely not the best I have seen in this genre. I mean, most of it worked fine but they still used the usual gimmicks and clichĆ©s inherent to this genre preventing the whole thing from becoming really remarkable. In this case, they really pushed it even further as not one character was terminally ill but both of them. Still, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
