(A review of
Do the Right Thing (1989))
By now, I have seen about 2/3 of the movies directed by Spike Lee and even though I used to be a huge fan of his work in the 90âs, it has been a while since he made something that really impressed me (for example, the recent âOldboyâ remake was rather pathetic). Still, I always had a weak spot for Spike Lee's movies, there was a time when he was one of the best American directors and this movie was and still is definitely his masterpiece. To be honest, it has been a while since I saw it and I should definitely re-watch it at some point but the damned thing definitely had a massive impact on me. Indeed, even though it is a rather simple story, there were so many layers, I thought it was just fascinating and I think it is one of the strongest socially conscious movies I have ever seen. Pretty much like Roger Ebert, I'm really amazed that such an important movie was at the time not even nominated for the Best Picture Academy award. Anyway, I think it is a great classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Spike Leeâs work.Â

(A review of
Raging Bull)
I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. When I was younger, 'Goodfellas' was definitely my favorite Scorsese feature but, nowadays, it is a toss up between this flick and 'Taxi Driver' and it is easily one of the best movies produced by De Niro and Scorsese. Basically, it is a really spellbinding story and easily the best movie dealing with an athlete. I mean, even though 'Ordinary People' was a very good flick, this masterpiece was just from another level and should have won the best picture academy award back in those days. In my opinion, if there is a time when Scoresese should have won the big prize, it was at that moment and not with 'The Departed' which was the only way the Academy could possibly apologize to this great master. Anyway, this movie is the stuff of legends. Indeed, In 1978, when Martin Scorsese was at an all-time low resulting from an addiction to cocaine, Robert De Niro visited him and told him that he had to clean himself up and make this movie. Thanks to De Niro, Scorsese was back in the game and directed one of the best movies ever made and continued to make incredible movies for the next 3 decades. Of course, we shouldn't forget De Niro who gave one of the best performances which has been a reference for many actors afterwards. Basically, it is a great movie and it is a must see for any decent movie lover.

(A review of
Paris, Texas (1984))
I think I had with this flick one of the best movie experiences in my whole life. Indeed, I must have been 15-16 years old the first I watched it and it completely blew me away. Back when it was released, it was a critical success and this movie won the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes film festival but nowadays it is a little bit forgotten but it's actually a real shame. Indeed, it has one of the best soundtrack ever and the story, the directing, the acting, everything was just plain amazing. Basically, it was just a really mesmerizing picture to watch. In my opinion, it is also a really poectic picture with a hypnotising slow tempo which could bother impatient viewers but it did work for me, absolutely. Since then, I have following Wim Wendersâs career and even though he has made many interesting features, no one of them really touched me like this one (even his following directing effort, âDer himmel ĂŒber Berlinâ, which is supposedly a masterpiece didnât impress me that much). Anyway, to conclude, it is easily my favorite movie directed by Wim Wenders , it is plain and simply a great movie and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
Grave of the Fireflies)
I already saw this movie, in fact, I even watched it in the movie theater when they released it again 10 years after it came out. At the time, the damned thing just blew away. Indeed, I had never seen anything like this before and, in my opinion, it was not one of the best animated films, it was even one of the best films ever made, no less than that and it definitely had a huge impact on me. Well, since it was available in Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out again after all these years, even if I have to admit that I was slightly worried. Indeed, the whole thing was so heavy, so emotionally hardcore, I wasnât sure if I should actually ever watching it again. Well, it took me 20 years but I finally gave it another try and it was definitely worth it though. I have to admit that its impact was not as strong as it was the first time around but I think itâs one of these movies that work above all when you first watch them. It is still such a beautiful and very well made picture and it shows that there is something actually rather poetic about hand-drawn animation compared to the rather coldness of CGI animation. Above all, the whole thing was so heartbreaking, it is easily one of the most heartbreaking movies I have ever seen, and it was one of the very few times I almost burst into tears while watching a movie (well, at least, the first time around). Basically, you spend 90 mins watching 2 young kids slowly dying in front of you which is as awful as you can imagine. Anyway, to conclude, it is a really powerful animated feature, a great classic, and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade)
Ever since I saw this movie as a kid in the movie theater when it was released, the damned thing has never ceased to fascinate me. By now, I have seen it so many times but it has never lost its charms and it is easily my favorite Indiana Jones movie. Basically, it is, in my opinion, the ultimate adventure film. The first masterstroke was to cast Sean Connery as Professor Henry Jones. Indeed, there was this great chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery and they made the whole thing completely spelbinding to watch. The second masterstroke was to pick up the ultimate archological artifact, the Holy Grail. That was for example a huge let down concerning the last installment (honestly, who cares about a crystal skull coming from space...) whereas the Holy Grail is one of the most fascinating myth in the whole human history and it was just awesome to see Dr Jones Jr and Sr chasing it around the globe. Finally, there were also loads of cool action scenes which kept me on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end. Basically, the whole thing was quite pitch-perfect, , it was just damned entertaining, I think it is a great classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
Profils paysans: La Vie moderne)
Basically, it was one of those French movies that almost no one else saw on Listal. Iâm not sure if Raymond Depardon is well known abroad but he is quite famous in France, especially for his acclaimed documentaries. Apparently, this movie was the third part of his 'farmer trilogyâ (following âLâapprocheâ et âLe quotidienâ) but I have to admit that it didnât see these other movies. Anyway, it seemed to be some interesting material so I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, I wasnât disappointed as it turned out to be pretty neat. Indeed, I was actually born in a very small village in France so the whole thing definitely brought back some memories. I also enjoyed Depardonâs sober directing which allowed these âcharactersâ to breath and it gave us a glimpse on their lifestyle. Eventually, nothing much really happens but it was, in this case, completely appropriate. A part from that, I have to admit it, there was no great revelations and shocking news but I thought it was pretty good nonetheless. To conclude, even though it was nothing really groundbreaking, I thought it was a decent documentary and I think it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested by this subject.Â

(A review of
Blazing Saddles (1974))
To be honest, even though I have seen almost all the movies directed by Mel Brooks (I think Iâm missing only 3 of them by now), I'm afraid I have never been a really huge fan of his work. Anyway, since this movie is a huge classic, I was really eager to check it out. Following its reputation, I really expected the whole thing to be seriously hilarious but, to be honest, eventually, I thought it was indeed pretty funny but not much more than Iâm afraid. For me, the best example is the scene around the fire where you get to see all these cowboys farting. Well, in my opinion, this scene was fairly amusing but also rather stupid as well and it shows the level of the humor displayed in this movie. Itâs such a shame that Richard Pryor wasn't allowed to  play Bart as he was supposed to be as the whole thing would have been much more interesting, at least, for me.  Eventually, I thought that 'The Producers' was much better but it was still a decent watch though. To conclude, even though I wasn't really blown away like I expected to be, it is still a classic and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like Mel Brooksâs work.Â

(A review of
Down to You)
I wasnât really expecting much from this movie but since I have a weak spot for Julia Stiles, I thought I might as well check it out. Unfortunately, the whole thing was just pretty lame. First of all , By now, I have seen almost all the movies starring Freddy Prinze Jr. (don't ask me why...) but, to be honest, I never really understood his appeal and I never thought that he really any had potential. Still, I have to admit it, Julia Stiles and he were both rather charming in this movie and, indeed, some scenes were decent but, unfortunately, most of it was just terribly underwhelming. At the end of the day, it is just an average and rather boring romantic comedy. Seriously, right from the start, you get to see a guy and a girl who are obviously meant for each other but they still have to solve some kind of bogus conflict to finally end up together. Eventually, concerning Julia Stiles and Freddy Prinze Jr., even though they both seemed to have a bright future ahead, pretty soon, their movies started to become more and more obscure and, nowadays, we donât hear much from them anymore. Anyway, to conclude, even though I have seen worse, it was pretty weak and it is not really worth a look.Â

(A review of
Quand j'Ă©tais chanteur)
To be honest, I really had no idea what to expect from this flick and it seemed to be another really obscure French movie but since I always had a weak for GĂ©rard Depardieu, I thought I might as well check it out. At first, the story seemed to be really lame. Indeed, I really donât like this kind of folk music so, at first, I really had a hard time to care about the main character and what he was going through. However, thanks to some really solid performances by GĂ©rard Depardieu and CĂ©cile De France, it was still quite intriguing to behold. Still, there were too many elements in the story that were not really well developed and it left me slightly frustrated. Eventually, with some rather lame material, they still managed to provide some interesting characters and I have to admit that I actually enjoyed most of this movie. Concerning the lovely CĂ©cile De France, except for a couple of US productions (âAround the World in 80 Daysâ, âHereafterâ), she never really managed to breakthrough outside France which is too bad because she is quite talented. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didnât completely work for me, it was still a decent watch it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.

(A review of
Criminal)
To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for John C. Reilly and Maggie Gyllenhaal, I thought that I might as well check it out. In fact, I didn't even know this before watching the damned thing but it is actually a remake and, as my fellow listal users have pointed out (see underneath), as usual, the original version seems to be much better. Anyway, in my opinion, I thought this remake had some potential and the beginning was really promising. Above all, I really liked John C. Reilly's performance. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for this actor and, in my opinion, he actually gave here some of his best work. Unfortunately, like so many other thrillers, there were just way too many twists and Iâm afraid it did ruin the movie for me. As usual with this genre, they did manage to build up something interesting but they apparently didn't know how to provide a satisfying ending. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you want to see John C. Reilly in one of his best performances.Â
