(A review of
Cassandra's Dream)
Back in the 90's, Woody Allen was one of my favorite directors and I have watched more of his movies than any other director (already 37 films!). But honestly, even if I keep watching his features from time to time when I have the opportunity, I canât say I'm still a big fan of his work anymore. Seriously, in my opinion, it has been many years since he actually directed a really good movie and this movie was not an exception, Iâm afraid. I mean, it wasnât a bad movie at all, the directing was actually pretty good and so were the two lead actors but the story was just rather weak. Basically, it was some kind of light version of âMatch Pointâ, which was maybe a critical hit but I though it was actually rather overrated. The plot also reminded me of the last masterpiece directed by Sidney Lumet, 'Before the Devil knows you're dead', but 'Before...' was actually way more convincing. Finally, I couldnât help wondering why on Earth the whole thing had to take place in England?!? I'm pretty sure it would have been better if it took place in New York. Anyway, to conclude, it was not completely terrible and I think it is actually worth a look but we were far from the golden years of Woody Allen's masterful career with this flick.Â

(A review of
Cleaner)
To be honest, I wasnât really sure what to expect from this flick but I always had a weak spot for Renny Harlinâs work, I thought I might as well check it out. I know, Harlin is far from being a great director but many of his movies often fall in the category âguilty pleasureâ. Well, this movie was actually a typical effort from the Finnish director. Indeed, this concept of âcleanerâ as a profession was pretty awesome and that there was definitely some potential to deliver at least a decent thriller. And, indeed, the beginning was promising with a nice mood and it was pretty neat to have Samuel L. Jackson playing the lead for once. Unfortunately, after a while, the story became rather weak and I kind of lost interesting in the whole thing as it became a rather average and predictable thriller. It is something rather usual with this director, even though he often manages to come up with some interesting ideas, he fails to properly develop these ideas and his movies almost always end being rather lazy and even cheap. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, I though it was a decent watch though and I think it is still worth a look.Â

(A review of
Step Brothers)
Seriously, I still have a hard time to believe that Adam McKay has just won the Academy Award for Best Writing for âThe Big Shortâ and his movie was even very close to win also the Best Picture Academy Award (eventually, I thought it was a decent watch but not much more than that, to be honest). Before this massive critical success, the guy had only directed some raunchy comedies starring Will Ferrell like this one. To be honest, even though this movie was a step-down from âTalladega Nightsâ, it was actually slightly better than I expected. Indeed, the beginning was actually quite all right and the material was in fact interesting. Hell, even,  the jokes were actually pretty funny. Unfortunately, rather quickly, the whole thing completely lost focus and, from this point, this feature was only about some rather tasteless jokes, most of the time involving both leads shouting insults at each other. Later on, Will Ferrel  and Adam McKay would work again together on âThe Other Guysâ but even though it sounded promising, I thought it was really disappointing and in fact weaker than this movie. Anyway, to conclude, I think itâs too bad because, with such a concept, it could have been way funnier but I still think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.Â

Seriously, this story had some great potential and I just loved the material. Indeed, I always find it more interesting when a movie would focus on smart people  instead of your usual attractive people. At first, when watching this flick, it reminded me of âThe Social Networkâ. Basically, this movie is what  âThe Social Networkâ would have looked if another less gifted director would have directed it. Indeed, unfortunately, even though it was based on a really fascinating story, the end result was just rather average. Basically, the whole thing was just really predictable and full of clichĂ©s and the dialogues were rather lame. Eventually, the big difference between âThe Social Networkâ and this movie was that while the movie directed by David Fincher  was really deep and thoughtfull, this movie was however just a piece of fluffy entertainment. Concerning Kate Bosworth, this movie would be her first and last high-profile production she would make following the failure of âSuperman Returnsâ and, since then, she would be only seen in some really obscure (and usually not really interesting) movies. Itâs too bad because she seemed to have a bright career ahead of her when she started. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, to conclude, it was not bad and it is indeed even rather entertaining but it was just really forgettable and it could have been so much better.

(A review of
Invictus)
I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I have it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. Well, even though this movie was not heralded like Clint Eastwood's previous work, I still really liked the damned thing though. Of course, during and after watching this flick, the one thing that kept popping in mine mind was 'was it really the most fascinating story about Nelson Mandela?' To be honest, probably not. The main issue was that, among all the great things achieved by Nelson Mandela, it is hard to believe that the rugby world cup was his greatest accomplishment and, personally, I would have rather watched something else about this great man. However, it is easy to understand that this subject was a crowd pleaser, easy to swallow and digest. Still, I thought it was an inspiring movie about one of the most inspiring historical figures that walked on Earth. Furthermore, if you compare it to the really underwhelming 'Goodbye Bafana', it was a really impressive historical drama. Once again, Clint Eastwood showed us that he is one of the best directors around (at least, back then) and you can see that Morgan Freeman had waited all his life to perform this character. Matt Damon was, as usual, pretty good but his character was not really interesting in my opinion. Anyway, to conclude, I think it is a great tribute to Eastwood's talent that, even though the subject seemed rather trivial, he managed to give it some gravitas. Therefore, the end-result was pretty neat and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Eastwood's work.

(A review of
Kirikou and the Wild Beasts)
Honestly, I have no idea if Kirikou is famous abroad but I do remember that, back when the first installment was released in France, it was quite a success. Eventually, it was not really surprising that they decided to make a sequel even though they took their time and I wonder if this sequel was also successful. To be honest, the end result didn't really reach the level of the previous installment. I mean, this 1st movie was quite impressive because it was something really different than your usual animated feature and the animation was simple but really effective. Well, with this 2nd installment, it still looked very nice but it was pretty much the same thing and the freshness was gone. On the top of that, instead of telling a fully fledge tale, they decided to tell some small stories which were all fine but not really amazing and I would rather have one compelling adventure involving this little guy. Stil, it remains a very nice animated feature especially if you compare it with what you can see nowadays. 7 years later they would come up with a 3rd installment but, unfortunately, I havenât seen it yet. To conclude, I thought it was pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

(A review of
In the Mood for Love)
I already saw this movie but since it was such a long time ago, I was really eager to check it out again. In fact, I did see this flick in the movie theater when it was released almost 20 years ago and, at the time, it was a massive critical success so I had some rather high expectations. I donât know, maybe I was too young but, at the time, even though I did like it, I can't say I thought it was great like everyone seemed to think. Indeed, I thought it was a little bit frustrating and I wish this couple would just kiss each other and move on with their life instead of remaining stuck for some rather obscure reasons. And, yet, after re-watching the damned thing, I have to admit that I was really impressed this time around. To be honest, I was still not really fascinated by the story but the whole thing looked just so amazing, it is easily Wong Kar-Wai's best directing effort and I would go further and I argue that it is one of the most gorgeous movies ever made. Anyway, to conclude, I'm really glad I gave this movie a 2nd chance, I now really love the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are interested in Wong Kar-Wai's work.

(A review of
Rescue Dawn)
I already saw this movie but since it was a while back and since I have it on DVD, I was quite eager to check it out again. First of all, Werner Herzorg is a fascinating director, I should definitely watch more of his movies and Christian Bale is definitely one of the most exciting actors at work right so, I was really excited when I heard that they would work together. And, was the end result worth it? Absolutely. In my opinion, it is probably the most accessible movie directed by Herzorg that I have seen so far, which is not a bad thing actually, and Bale gave, as usual, a really solid perfomance (once again, Christian Bale lost 55 pounds for his role and you might wonder about his sanity since he keeps losing and getting some massive weight for so many roles). Of course, the only critic you might have is that the story was not really original but it didn't really bother me and I was entertained from the beginning until the end. Even the usually obnoxious Steve Zahn didnât bother me and, for this movie, he has delivered his best performance so far. Anyway, to conclude, I thought that it was a very good flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Werner Herzogâs work.

(A review of
This Is Spinal Tap (1984))
Since I kept hearing some really good things about this flick, I was really eager to check it out. Eventually, it was basically one of those cases when I heard about the movie for years, I got such huge expectations and this movie reached an almost mythical status in my mind. However, did the movie really live up to those expectations? Not really, Iâm afraid. I mean, it was a good movie and it is definitely original (I think it was actually the very first mockumentary, a genre which has flourished since then but I think only this movie has really become a classic but I might be mistaken). So, I have to admit it, it was very well done and quite clever but, to be honest, I never thought it was really hilarious. Sure, I did smile a couple of times, yes, but did I actually laugh my ass off ? Never. Still, it was the beginning of a very prolific directing career for Rob Reiner who would be responsible for some major classics in the 80âs ('Misery', 'When Harry Met Sally...', 'The Princess Bride', ' Stand by Me', 'The Sure Thing'). To conclude, it is probably not my kind of humor but still, it remains a pretty good flick and it is definitely worth a look.

(A review of
Kicks)
I didnât even notice before but Iâm actually the only one who has rated this flick so, I guess, it must be one of the most obscure movies I have seen so far. It is probably because it is a Dutch movie and Dutch movies donât do well abroad and the fact that this movie was barely seen in the Netherlands didn't help either. Anyway, I thought it wasn't bad at all, it was actually quite ambitious and there was definitely some potential. Basically, it is pretty much like a Dutch version of 'Crash' (which was a good movie but not that great either). I did like the directing, the actors did a good job and the different stories were interesting but not very well developped, Iâm afraid, and there were still too many clichĂ©s for me. The point is that, at the time, they released in Netherlands some very successful comedies about its current multicultural community (âShouf Shouf Habibiâ and âHet schnitzelparadijsâ) and it is pretty obvious that they wanted with this movie to surf on this wave but nobody in the Netherlands was apparently interested to see something serious about the subject. To conclude, in spite of its flaws, it remains an interesting flick and it is actually worth a look, especially if you are interested in Dutch movies.
